hi guys, kinda noob in updating firmware here....wanna ask few questions..

1) is it necessary to update my firmware to 2.2 coz im still in 1.2 now...whats the difference and do i need to jailbreak and unlock it again
2) how cydia differ from installer coz now my phone(jailbroken) is still using the installer but the number of apps seems to be almost the same everytime i refresh..need to add more source mayb??

thank you
*
Since you're on Fw 1.2, you can upgrade your 2G firmware to Fw 2.2. Fw 2.2 has gotten much better with AppStore like games and tons of applications. Do follow the guide on first post to unlock your 2G iPhone.

As for the Installer, it's pretty dead right now on Fw 1.2. With the new Cydia on Fw 2.2, is really much better than the old installer or even the new Installer 4.

I highly recommend you upgrade your firmware.

Cheers

Q: Can I jailbreak my iPod Touch 2G with Jailbird?
A: If the ability is there to do it, it will be built into Jailbird, but as of right now…this second…no you can not

Q: Where can I download Jailbird?
A: You cant yet, I haven’t released it yet.

Q: Can I beta test super amazing spectacular (did I mention super cool) program?
A: A form will be created for you to sign up to be a beta tester, beta testers will then be narrowed down programatically, then hand selected by myself (difrnt)

Q: When will Jailbird be released?
A: I am hoping to have the beta ready for beta testers by the end of the month (January 31), and release a stable version to the public sometime in February, however no promises are being made at this time and NO dates are set in stone.

For those who has jailbroken thier iPhone, hold off your upgrade to Fw 2.2.1.

For 2G iPhone, the baseband did not get updated but the 3G baseband is at 2.30.03. If you were using yellowsn0w, this will shut you down. Jailbreak will be available from DevTeam soon..

Note that every time you do a firmware upgrade, any settings or preferences on your iPhone can be restored to the state you want so long as you do a backup before the upgrade. iTunes will automatically prompt you to do the backup. Syncing your iPhone after the firmware upgrade will restore all your applications that are wiped out during the upgrade process. Do not worry about having to pay again for applications already purchased from the iTunes Store as purchases made are a one off process (lifetime). If your application does not show under the iTunes Library (or does not appear after a sync) for any reason after firmware upgrades, simply reselect your application from the store, click buy, type in your password and it will re-download for free.

Those who have jailbroken units and jailbroken applications on the other hand should be aware that after a firmware upgrade, all jailbroken states will be wiped out which means you will have to redo the jailbreak process and manually reinstall jailbreak applications.

MuscleNerd(from DevTeam) has confirmed that the iPhone 2.2.1 firmware update breaks the yellowsn0w unlock.

In his Twitter feed MuscleNerd shared the following information:

for *jailbreak* purposes 2.2.1 is fine for all including ipt2g. But it BREAKS the yellowsn0w soft *unlock* for iPhone 3G

it's not surprising that they fixed injection hole for yellowsn0w, it is surprising to see a "silent" update

the iPhone 2G baseband is untouched .. I *think* they've stopped all development of it smile.gif last update for it was 8 months ago

It is quite likely that Apple released this update just to close the unlock hole used by the iPhone Dev-Team. We will keep you up to date with any further information released. Please DO NOT update.

do u think my problems ( touch screen jammed / cant even slide to answer ) can resolve by upgrading / restore my phone??
my whole are stuck.. only can on and off..

Try to JB your iPhone and see how is your iPhone status after. If the problem still accurs, most probably hardware related and i would suggest to contact 'crxr' via PM or contact him at his number: +6 012-2020264.

I do hope your 2G iPhone will do fine after JB and do read the link below to know more on the iPhone.

Firmware 2.2.1 download link is available on the first post.

Do not upgrade if your 2G/3G iPhone is jailbroken or using yellowsnow.

Official unlock 3G iPhone's may proceed to upgrade your firmware.

Cheers

@frozzbyte n gengstapo

I don't find this Fw 2.2.1 any significance to update the firmware unless is cut and paste feature. Will skip this upgrade completely.

Thank you for taking the time to write the details.

You problem occurs because you only updated the firmware without unlocking. What you need to do is to follow the guide provided on the first post. I recommend you to download Pwnagetool and follow the guide to JB your 2G iPhone. Make sure you read the tutorial carefully before you proceed. It's fairly easy.

As for the touch screen, will see what happens after you JB your phone.

The iPhone Dev-Team has posted a video detailing what the iPhone 2.2.1 Firmware Update means for your device.

In summary, please don't update until a new version of PwnageTool is released that will create a custom ipsw of 2.2.1 which does not update the baseband.

I'm sorry. There's not much help as you have updated your Fw to 2.2.1. The current Quickpwn does not support Fw 2.2.1. You'll have to wait for Devteam to release an updated version of Quickpwn.

Pwnagetool and Quickpwn Mac is available on first post. Windows Quickpwn will soon be up from DevTeam.

GOLDEN RULE: If you have a 3G iPhone running 2.2 firmware and you want to keep your ability to use yellowns0w (or the option to use it in the future) do NOT use QuickPwn, and do not use the official ipsw or the iTunes update process without using PwnageTool.
Yellowsn0w will NOT work with the baseband version (02.30.03) that is present in the recent 2.2.1 update - you will need to create a custom ipsw that will allow you to update safely without affecting the baseband.

The Yellowsn0w version has been updated to 0.9.7. Yellowsn0w is available from Cydia or Installer - this version allows compatibility with pwned 2.2.1 system (not baseband) - again - remember 0.9.7 yellowsn0w DOES NOT WORK WITH 2.2.1 (02.30.03) directly - you need to be running a ‘pwned’ version of 2.2.1 (using Pwnagetool 2.2.5) which doesn’t upgrade the baseband.

@nokia

Already posted the link you gave.

Cheers
