Hi and welcome to the family. smile.gif

It's actually a rare case for joeys to suddenly die unless fed an improper diet, too much stress, not fed enough etc. Gliders are quite hardy and I think this may be the first case of a 8.5month old joey to succumb to sudden death in most of our experiences.

Before the thought of purchasing a joey, you should go and do further research and learn how to tell the age of the joey on your own as pet stores are not always truthful with what they sell. For instance, certain ppl that only know the proper age of a joey that can leave it's mom get cheated by certain places/ppl as they show you a joey that is barely 4 weeks oop and say it is 2+ months old. This happens because the buyer had not done adequate research to be able to tell what a 2 month old joey looks like.

I'm sorry for your loss Kelvin, may she rest in peace.

YRV_5533,

always bring our new pets home immediatly, let them settle down without too much stress...

from hamster to dog, we can see they will stress out when go to new environment and new owner. all pets are advise to bring home immediately.

glider is more sensitive, they can be very very stress.

Jonyeap u didn't read the pass mortem Kelvin post ah??

i copy n paste for u here...

1.30pm - Done buying, Letika with me, In Car with Brother [going to Kelana Jaya]

12.30am - Arrive in room in UKM

From the post mortem :-
1 ) Lung = floating in a bowl of water [good coz got air rather than water]
2 ) Kidney = Bright red colour [signs of healthy]
3 ) Heart = Bright red colour [signs of healthy]
4 ) Urine tract = got urine [signs of she drinks]
5 ) Stomach = no food [NOT GOOD, as seems like Letika only chew the mealworms i gave but not actually eat any]

So, Dr Mervin concluded the joey is in a healthy condition, the reason she died maybe the coz of :-

A ) Cold Stress, or
B ) Lack of Glucose, or
C ) Combination of both [this makes it much more prone to death]

Actually gliders that are 4-5 weeks plus can survive more than 12 hours without food. But it does depend on the individual glider. Each glider's stress level is different, but usually gliders that are often handled and used to being taken out won't stress as easily as a glider that has rarely been handled and suddenly put into a pouch to be off to a new home.

For example Phoenix, he never crabs when I handled him everyday but he sensed he was going somewhere when I put him in the pouch and started to be very crabby. He was out with me the whole day before I handed him to KJ and Olivia and that time he was just nice 2 months oop. The night before that he already had a tummy-full of Slurp and fruits, but in the morning I didn't feed him. So technically he did not eat anything other than some mealworms and a bit of juice since I took him out till at night when I handed him over to his new owners and he's doing fine till now.

Now, don't go jumping into conclusion.

Hun has replied to you. Hope it clears your doubt.

QUOTE(DeRossi @ Sep 18 2008, 12:24 AM)
Basically what it means is that when you take your new joey (especially the first time), you need to bring it straight home. A small joey cannot store reserves in their body (they have low fat stores and rapid glycogen depletion) meaning they will need to eat on time and rather constantly.

IF you have no choice but to stay out the whole day, it would be best to give one or two drops of concentrated glucose.

But the best is still to bring it home directly so that the stress levels are reduced and the joey can eat on time.

I guess all of us learnt something new today.

By the way, the lack of glucose is known as hypoglycemia in medical terms.

QUOTE from JTI
*

I have experienced NOT taking Micah straight home after his neutering surgery.

He was definitely not well, but due to unavoidable reasons, I couldn't go home straight.

Furthermore he had to fast the previous night before the surgery.

While outside I keep him close to me. Hold him in my hand and syringe feed him natural fruit juice to give him strength.

He did okay until we reached home.

But I guess it's very different because he was already 4 month OOP and had grown well with his parents...

That is why preparing yourself with a lot of glider info, caring and such will help you when you get a glider.

The more you learn, the better equipped you are to handle them.

Young animals have a higher metabolism, meaning they process food faster since their body is growing and is more active. They need food that is high in carbohydrates to help the body function properly. If human stop eating, we also become weak. For babies, if no food or water, can dehydrate. For animals that are sick, dehydrated or lack of appetite, glucose water is given to help sustain the body....

For joeys, we need to feed twice to 3 times a day. Generally if we feed a supplement food with fruits and insects, it is good enough. It is not a case of giving sweet fruits or sugar, just give a carbohydrate to bring the body's sugar level up so it can stay active and the body functions properly. Adult gliders can survive with 1 feeding a day.... but joeys need at least 2 feedings.

are you saying that although you both (I say you both because both of you do sales together ma) know that a joey needs to eat 2 to 3 times a day but yet you starved the joey till night. i feel that is cruel yah?
At least, Kelvin didn't realise he was starving the joey. cos he do feed mealworm, just he don't expect the joey didn't eat it. So, he not purposely do. But this one, you all know ma. why you starve them like that? sad.gif
