dragonforce was featured in captialone's mobile banking app commercial. quite cool.

since i am on the topic of speedmetal - can i safely say that dragonforce is the best there is today ? i mean, look at gamma ray and helloween.... they are pretty much crap now

Older band / musician tend to be crap nowadays. Maybe they no longer focus mainly on the musical side, instead they're focusing more on the business side and entrepreneur. Some of them focus on writing, grove, melody. No longer try to outdo themselves with each new stuff like they always did during their younger days. Some people think it is maturity, some other think those band are simply lost the fire and hunger.

Personally, i'm slightly disappointed with Steve Vai. He's not a metal musician, but my point is how could someone who's so talented and gifted like him getting very sloppy today? He's still a virtuoso but if you compare his stuff and his playing today compared to 5 - 8 years ago, it sounds very different. His lick, tone, improvisation sounds underwhelming. Apparently he's not really practicing his guitar play like he used to do in the past. He's focusing on his orchestra project.

Of course, now they dont do drugs anymore. Where u think they got the inspiration for those sick riffs and legendary solos? From getting high of course! Haha even destruction write their riffs while smoking weed( see their official vid seven deadly sins). Thats why laaarrr i ask uolsssss check out the band evile. Theyre still young and not yet sold out like most of old bands, esp metallica.

here is my take :
Steve vai - yup, his two best albums are passion & warfare + sex & religion. Perhaps he is comparing himself with Yngwie Malmsteen (hence the desire to something beyond metal like his opera) which, even though have been on a downhill but have accomplished so much more imho.

so back to topic of why older metal bands sound like crap now - i just wish more are like amorphis/emperor/dark funeral/bathory/Death. yes, they have changed their sound over the years but at least its not a pile of crap. Case in point - Bathory's Norland - clean vocals but yet the heaviness and the signature atmosphere produced is still top notch. Man...i really wished Quorthon was still alive..... there really isnt anymore bands that can make albums like him.

This is pretty good band. I don't know what the exact genre but it sound like mix of old school thrash and death metal. Fast paced riff and blistering drum followed by Dave Mustaine-esque lyric. This is my kind of stuff, although i prefer slightly clean vocal.

You can download the album for free.

CoF, another band that used to be great.

I think Accept still kicking ass:

Getting better with age? Or maybe i'm not really paying attention to their older stuff.

DARK FUNERAL & EMPEROR? Perghh...
I would suggest you DARK THRONE, SATYRICON, IMPALED NAZARENE or WATAIN.

You can also try Immortal. Their style appears to be rather consistent since their early black metal days.

EDIT: Also with the dubious honor of havingthe arguably most ridiculous, over-the-top and unintentionally (or is it?) hilarious metal music video in history.
