Just an observation... Vietnam is always facing east so wouldn't the sun set behind ya towards the mountains instead of over the sea?  hmm.gif
*
I lost my orientation so I just found my spot on the boat and captured whatever I could tongue.gif

I sat on the plane on the wrong side twice! When I went there, I wanted to capture rising sun but it was on the other side of the plane. Then when I went home, I wanted to capture the setting sun and again it was on the other side.

Bleh. tongue.gif

Just to revisit this by mindkiller. I tried the lens out at FRIM, and yes, it does have the problem mentioned. The composition changes as you turn the focus ring.

QUOTE(mindkiller6610 @ Sep 10 2008, 05:58 AM)
does it really affect the compo much ??
i guess can just fix that by cropping in PP after that..
and answering my own question,

D40 does have TTL monitor preflash, it is fast and only flashes once..

to try it.. set your flash mode to TLL and REAR,
set your shutter speed to 1 second or longer..
and shoot, u notice that it flashes 1 time at the beginning of the exposure (that's the preflash),
and flashes again at the end of the exposure(that's the REAR flash)..

when u change the flash power to Manual and REAR, it only flashes one time at the end of the exposure..

comparing to my bro's Sony A200, it flashes 2 times before the real flash kicks in..
*
Nope, it doesn't really affect the composition. And you can probably adjust it as you turn the focus ring. I don't find that a problem. I don't know but Mr Rockwell tends to nitpick on things.

QUOTE(ifer @ Sep 10 2008, 08:39 AM)
now i dont bother using filters for my shooting. i dont care if it is a b+w or a heliopan or a singhray.

i will never use UV filter anymore

they are a piece of joke
*
See, ifer's philosophy affected me. I dont use UV filter as well tongue.gif

Anyway...

I went to Hanoi for my company trip and well, street shoot opportunity aplenty. I am going to chronicle Day 1, 3 and 4 of my trip with Day 2 being the Halong Bay series up in the Travel section. I will limit myself to 10 photos of each day to bring you the Hanoi flavour, hopefully.

I use Flickr mainly because its easy to use, and it has a great community of fantastic photographers smile.gif

As for resizing the pics, well Flickr does that automatically as well! tongue.gif

Thanks for quick reply. But as far as I know, Flickr only has 100mb free storage. And 4mb per file takes a little too long to upload.

Anyone uses other methods?
*
You can always pay for Flickr smile.gif

Actually there were signs that says "No camera, no photo" but my guide said can. Confused me but when I started snapping them doing work, no one stopped me. But you can't photograph the final products.

QUOTE(ebernie @ Sep 12 2008, 09:14 AM)
No, I am not comparing the work of career photogs of the past with the current ones. They are about the same in quality. Obviously the current pics are mostly in color and they are sharper, but seriously, sharpness and color rarely come into play when judging a picture, so long as it's not too blurry until I can't make anything out of it.

And I know better than to judge any photogs. Especially ones that do not do it for a living. But if I did, flickr has plenty of examples of ppl not doing this thing at work but produce mind blowing pics.

I guess my initial post was a reflection of how frustrated I am when some keeps on posting about gear. D3s and 70-200VRs are nice and all, but they don't make good pics.

I bet if I gave 'zio' another 105mm lens, he'd be able to produce good photos. Heck, his photos are compressed and resized already but because of how he captured emotions and told stories, generally I think his series has been the better works shown here. They definitely don't have to be pin-sharp.

Sorry for the last post. Back to the regular D40 channel from my side now tongue.gif
*
Woot i got a compliment. Terima kasih. I don't mind another 105mm lens wahahaha biggrin.gif

QUOTE(orenzai @ Sep 12 2008, 12:24 PM)
thumbup.gif luv it...but i blive some of the shots of the expressions are too tight for eg the apek...because i dunno what the surrounding is like so make the shot takde "feel" smile.gif IMO
*
Ooo the motor apek? Hrmm true. Would this have been a better photo to express the motorcycle-cabs?
user posted image

Hrmm I notice that Flickr has been degrading my pics whenever they resize it to 800. Should I do it myself and then upload to Flickr?

@mindkiller I believe it is called Fractilius or something like that smile.gif There is also another Flood filter, where everything looks like its flooded. Quite cool.

You mean you actually upload the full 6mp photo on flickr? Or do you resize it?

I upload the original file to Flickr but using the Flickr Uploader for PC, I can choose to resize it to 800 pixels. I noticed that I get some smearing at times. sad.gif

QUOTE(ebernie @ Sep 12 2008, 05:34 PM)
A few questions:

1. Why wanna resize before uploading to flickr? Can use flickr as an online-backup tongue.gif
2. Anyone can comment on the radio trigger by phottix? Reliable or not? Easy to die?

Btw, CLS is not a replacement for radio triggers. Outdoors when there are other sources of light (sun or even other flashes), CLS might not be as useful as radio triggers. Range is considerably less too.

Also - apologies on the misinformation about the SB900. I just assumed it would be more powerful because of its extra reach. Wrong I guess tongue.gif

And zio, those were indeed nice pics. Though you used an expensive lens, I bet you'd give out nice pics even if you had another brand but similar range lens.

And the silve camera sucks. Yuck. All the way black man smile.gif
*
1. Because posting on websites, its best to go with 800px as the widest/longest. When I upload my original, the Large option is 1024 and medium is 500, so the 800 option is not available to me. So thats why I resize them smile.gif

2. I used a phottix remote for the D300. Then again I used it twice only but it didnt die on me.

And thanks for another compliment tongue.gif Ah well, nice pictures are differently defined by different people, so it all depends what everyone is looking for smile.gif

Did anyone see the D90 photo at ISO2500. Damn. tongue.gif

The Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro? Yep, comes with built-in motor for D40.

With respect to xandman and Joseph, both which I have met and befriended, please just take your personal battles outside of the forum. If you two feel that you need to reply to each other, take it into the PMs.

@dani_irwan as ebernie said, I prefer one with VR (or any equivalent) because it is a telephoto after all. If you think you won't be using at low-light conditions then its a good consideration. kelvin_yam has been using an equivalent lens from Sigma (I believe) to good effect with his wildlife and macro shots.

@ebernie well the tamron does say Macro on the lens so I assume it offers the same capabilities as the Sigma. And wouldn't the D90 be the primary body? tongue.gif
