Hi,

Just got an Iphone 8GB not the 3G, it is on Firmware 1.1.4 already unlock. I am planning to give to my son (lucky fellow). My question is that should I upgrade it to firmware 2.0 firmware or just leave it as it is. Also is there a way to prevent him from upgrading it. His main usage would be SMS, Wifi. I will not allow him to use the Edge because of the cost.

Any suggestion like application for a 14 year old kids. A friend brought this phone back from the US a week ago so the cost should not be too expensive.

2.0.1 has as equal amount of games& apps as 1.1.4... i am spoiled for choices in apps store. and at least apps store offers legal softwares..

and 2.0.1 has bosspref and bosstool, which is why i jump into 2.0.1 bandwagon.

but please please dont ask how to upgrade in here as there is already answers in iphone section.

Just drag and drop on ur playlist for song and movies... it'll automaticly seperated to its own room... Just remember, itunes works same as windows MP... you cant simply change the location of songs and movies or whatsoever once they are in the list of itunes... Itunes keep reading to its very begining of file source... changing location will make you update itunes song/movie lists....

Ini macam susah vmad.gif so must tell him not to update then. Can we backup my existing 1.1.4 then if got problem then restore back.

On another matter I just put in my Maxisbroad band and able to surf and sms. The edge settings is slightly different

APN = maxisbb
User = maxis
password = wap

The APN for Maxisbroad band is not the same as Maxis Mobile.

Kid plug in iPhone to iTunes. iTunes spits out there's a new firmware update, Kid thought nothing of it, and updated. iPhone becomes locked. Kid horrified, hides the fact that he did it. Dad come back home and found a brick instead of an iPhone.

Sounds like a nice plot for a sitcom, but the outcome may not be so pleasant. And believe me, we have seen TOO MANY cases like this already.

The point im trying to make here is, educate, educate, EDUCATE! You need to be well armed with knowledge, of what to do AND what NOT to do, before you become an iPhone user. Without these, I can GUARANTEE you coming back here with questions, which may or may not be answered as nicely and politely as what you're getting here. Just a heads-up to you. icon_rolleyes.gif

Yes it can, you also have to wait for the unlocks (preferably software unlocks) to arrive, and judging from the recent activities, you may have to wait a while. A phone is a necessity, and unless the iPhone is your secondary phone, you will feel the pinch of losing the ability to call.

Plus, reverting back to older firmwares bear its own risks and complicated, not for the faint-hearted. And as always, these are all done AT YOUR OWN RISK, so there are never guarantees when it comes to these.

Right now the term BRICK is being use so loosely. A brick in the correct term refer to an un-useable phone. No matter what u do it can't be use again ... unless for a hardware method. No one ever get bricked just by upgrading the firmware. They'll only get locked back to the original state which is can't use any foreign sim cards except for the intended telco only.

People get confuse with brick, unlock, jailbreak terms.

I think what he meant was a future firmware update, that appears may not have its unlocks software-wise yet. Having to wait for these to come up while all the time losing the ability to call, is painful in these days of need-to-be-in-touch-all-the-time .

Added on August 21, 2008, 4:49 pmA brick, in this sense, is Dad coming back home to that Cable + iTunes screen and not being able to do other than emergency calls. An iPhone is not a phone unless you can use it as such.

Ahhh.... ok will not get rid of his cranky phone now just incase. So sifu what software do I use to backup my 1.1.4 firmware now? Hehe.... all these are a challenge rather than a problem. I just dismantle my EeePC 901 and install the touch screen, there was 2 delicate soldering point and all is well, so I think with the right info... the keyword is RIGHT INFO most of these can be solve.

I still remember those XBOX days I screw up the eeprom and had to make a cable and solder the eeprom and program it with an image given by someone in the of those xbox forum. It was pretty scarry biggrin.gif .

Terima kasih for the WARNING biggrin.gif

On 1.1.4, I cant say much, didnt really had any games on mine while I was on that.

On 2.0.x, get Texas Hold Em, Scrabble, Super Monkey Ball and Critter Crunch. PLEASE get them legitimately, these developers did a great job creating/porting them over. If you need to know how to get a valid US iTunes account and credit into it, there are posts in this forum describing how.

Hi Jackdon

To start with, you can upgrade to firmware 2.0.1 if you wish too. There are guidelines available here to help you to upgrade via software in Mac or Windows Xp.

http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/768477

As for games in 1.1.4, there are not alot and can't recall what was good.

But in firmware 2.0.1, most of the popular games are mentioned on stringfellows post and there lot's more applications available, free or purchase.

Since upgrading to fw 2.0.1, it has been a tremendous experience with Appstore and of course, the 3rd party software from Cydia and Installer 4.

Do take sometime to read up on how to go about upgrading as it is not easy if you're doing it for the first time.

tinkerbel,

Yup @String was right it was not for the faint heart. I did screw up initially took me a while to get back to where I was. OK this is what happen.

Yesterday download all the files required.

1. 2G restore file
2. Winpwm 2.0.0.4
3. Boot image for 3.9 and 4.6

The first step of ipsw builder was not a problem and pretty straight forward. Proceed as per instruction from Winpwn 2.0 guide. http://sleepers.net/news/2008/07/25/winpwn-20-guide/

Save the file up and now we need to put the iphone in the DFU mode. This is tricky and I tried for about 20 minutes and could not get it on the DFU mode. Damn... so I google for an easy way and found a DOS mode of putting the iphone to DFU and the nightmare begins. Onces I run that DFU utility it blank iphone screen and turn it white as stated in the webpage so I was not worried.

Proceed to do the shift restore from itune 7.7 in my Vista PC. After about 5 minutes ERROR 1604..... shocking.gif

Power down the phone and power it up the iphone boots up in the recovery mode which shows itune logo and the USB connector. I just could not get it out of this mode by powering it off..... hold the power button for 20 seconds.... hold the power button and the home button together and still it would always boot up in the mode.

Then the WIFE came in and it is about 4pm and said come lets go to MAHA 2008..... vmad.gif what to do..... left the iphone on the table and off we go to MAHA 2008. I think 80% of the time when I was in MAHA 2008 my mind was racing ... where did I screwup. We finally reach home around 8.30.

I thought it was Windows Vista that was the issue so I install itune in my multimedia PC and ran itune shift restore and the same results. Well Google that problem and downloaded ibrickr 0.91 and that brought my iphone back to my 1.1.4 state... Whew..... rclxm9.gif Check the phone and it seems to be ok.

Well like daddy like to live on the edge and tried the DFU method 3 and it work. And I proceed with the itune Shift Restore and 15 to 20 minutes I am now on 2.0.1.. rclxm9.gif

hehe.... now I have to do the number patch.....

What a day.

jackdon.

What a day.

jackdon.

I SINCERELY SALUTE YOU, JACKDON!

You are the epitome of someone who knew very little about the iPhone, and yet took the challenge, and learn up about the process, and the end result, manages independantly, to update your iPhone to 2.0.1. This is the attitude we want to see in the forum, the self-reliance, as well as you being able to contribute your say about your experiences, your dos and donts, the recommendeds and the avoidances.

This is the prime example of WHY we want newbies to learn and do things themselves. I may not be able to answer for Jackdon, but for me, when I first managed to update 1.0.2 (yes, I had mine that old!) and unlocked it using command-line processes via Terminal, the end result is damn satisfying. I get a nice working iPhone, and I get to contribute to the community with my experiences. In the end, I became not an observer, but I help contribute to the community.

Good show, Jackdon, and congratulations once again! rclxms.gif

@Stringfellow,

Thanks for the compliment and yup the feeling is WOW rclxm9.gif ....

I do have a quick question since I am still a noob that follows instruction to the dot. Now that I have a 2.0.1 working image file. Can I use that if my son screws it up by updating it mistakenly. Well to day is my last day with the phone as he is due back tomorrow from his MSSM competition in Johor. So it will be back to my boring Treo 650 Palm OS that I can't seems to live without it.

Seriously IMO I think Version 1.1.4 is much snappier.

And thanks to all that had given me valueable information and point this noob in the right direction.

You can go up to 2.0.2, there have been reports on successful attempts at pwning 2.0.2 by hskoon.

http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/771084

Note that he used Quickpwn instead of Pwnage Tool or Winpwn, plus he said you only need to jailbreak it, it remained unlocked.

enemysaxon, we all know, even with whatever verdict the outcome of the "episode" is, that what is right and what is wrong. I may be touch on the newbies, but examples like Jackdon here is the result paying off.

For what it is worth, this further proves my suspicion, and cements my lack of faith on the people that handle this forum. Believe me, it may come to a point where they would come back to me and say "Tak suka? Keluar!", just like that ignorant MP in Parliament.

enemysaxon,

Yup he sure is a lucky fellow the iphone as a gift for him was like an accident.

A few months back a good friend said that his nephew was coming back from the US for a holiday and I said. Pick one iphone back for me. Well that did not happen because there were too many request but his other brother came back a week ago with one iphone for me. I guess many other people was not keen because of the release of the 3G so I pick it up so it should not cost me more that RM 1,000/= .

For the last few weeks my son's 2 year old phone was getting cranky and he had been complaining and keep hinting that he wanted a SE W890i and I check that new unit is about Rm1.4 K. So I might as well give him this iphone. So I actually save RM400/= giving him this phone even though I like it so much.

Well... wait till some of you become parent n you will know.

MAHA 2008 = Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture & Agrotourism Show 2008

Entrance is free check out http://www.mahaexpo.com/

I would love to give my son the Treo 650 but I think there will be mutiny at home shakehead.gif anyway there are quite a few application on the Treo that I use almost everyday plus the FACT that I can type 5 times faster on the Treo than on the Iphone biggrin.gif .

hehe..... daddy may have a secret plan as my phone is due for an upgrade hehe...... let see how the Treo 800 3G when will be launch else who knows I may have a friend in NZ or HK than can get me a 3G phone soon biggrin.gif biggrin.gif .

I just love the iphone interface and amaze how quick it is. I use xillisoft to convert Shrek the Third and it is cool. Yup BossPref looks great for preventing the Edge usage accidently and if he needs to go online he can turn it on for a few show off to his friends smile.gif.

Well thanks for all your support here, I have to admit with the support and the fact that I know that if I realy really screw up I can get help here really pushes me ahead with the upgrade.

jackdon in 5 hours will be back to his old Palm OS Treo 650

P.S

Any IM client that is compatible with Windows Messenger, I am sure he will be asking.

jackdon, you are one very very cool dad smile.gif Good work on getting the iPhone upgraded & unlocked.

I'm sure your son would truly appreciate the iPhone and take good care of it. My MBP was a surprise reward from my dad as well, after I managed to secure a scholarship to study overseas. No words could ever describe how much I appreciate it. It made me truly realize that money doesn't come easy, and I've since worked my own way to feed my Apple addiction.

You've worked hard for the money, and you have all the right to reward your children whichever way you see fit. I'm sure you know where the limits are, there's spoilt children and there's well brought-up children. I truly believe your family falls in the latter category, and well done for that smile.gif

I like the way you express yourself with emoticons.. Very cute, and a refreshing thing to see in here! Pretty sure it'll put a smile on everyone's faces. thumbup.gif Also, theres noobs and there's newbies. You're definitely not a noob, but an exemplary newbie. Hang around here more and you'll be a pro in no-time.

Keep it up, and keep on daddy rockin!

Now I got a problem, son came back and I had all my contacts in the phone so we did a reset to erase all content and settings. It went on for an hour and after that the apple logo appear and the clocklike circle is on for almost 30 minutes not moving. I do a press the power and the home button to turn it off and power on again it seems to be the same. Any idea or should I reload it again.

Stick it in your Mac/PC and see if iTunes sees it. That may jumpstart the iPhone.

I dare not advise anything further, it may be an intermittent kinda thing.

*prom night flash back!*

well in a nutshell, jackdon. make sure that you have completed all the necessary steps to create fw, pwn the itunes etc.

finished? open your itunes (latest version) and enter the "genuine" DFU mode where the screen is entirely blank (or black). if everything goes well, it will flash up a glaring white screen. voila!!!

Yup,

I wasn't that worried and I DFU it again and shitf restore from itune and now back to square one.... now this "DO NOT RESET WIPE OFF CONTENT AND SETTINGS" should be in the sticky.

hehe...... now I have to patch the phone patch and contact patch again.

So for all you out the do not panic, the iphone is actually a small power full computer running a strip down version of macos 10 which is actually Linux. So as long as we can reset the phone to the DFU mode we can sort of GHOST it back.

It maybe those update I did or Bosspref causing the issue I suspect.

Hi,

Now that the iphone is no longer with me, I sat down and had look back on what I had done that lead to my DFU screw up and I now know why I was unable to get to the DFU mode. MY SPEAKER WAS OFF.... so no beep and the screen on the iphone was not suppose to show anythine.

Now I do have another question, I believe I should be able to get another iphone 2G for less that 1K. Should I fork more $$$ for a 3G. Other than the 3G bandwidth bot the iphone looks and felt pretty much the same is it. I had not use a 3G iphone before.

@ jackdon

the 3g on the aifontrigi is purely for a more pleasant/faster internet surfing or downloads.

so the "feel" of using an aifontrigi won't differ much in that particular department as opposed to the first generation of iphone. unless you are talking about an additional gps module, then yes.

but anyway (OT a little), when i made my first video call from a 3g phone to another one, i have to admit that i was rather "jakun" and excited.

Hey.... I am back hehe.... biggrin.gif

Nope I did not keep the iphone for myself so my son is enjoying that unit.

I now have another unit in my hand that belong to a friend and helping him upgrading it from his 1.1.4 to 2.0.1 and was successful. There is however some issue with the upgrade, after upgrding I proceed to test out the phone and everything works, the 3G Celcom works with Edge and Wifi works just great. I do have a problem with the Cydia upgrade and installing OpenSSH. For some reason the upgrade seems to fail with the following error message.

error: posix operation time out

I am unable to install OpenSSH so I am not able to do the patch for the phone and country patch. I actually did a restore 3 times and still the same issue. Now I use the same image I use for my son iphone. Is that a problem because I did not rebuild a new custom image 2.0.1 because I figure it is the same image anyway.

And the story of my life begins again. So I figure I might as well rebuild another image again, so I fire up winpwn 2.4 and rebuild as per instruction except this time I expanded the partiion to 602MB. After that I proceed to DFU it and did the shift restore and then it HAPPEN AGAIN. This time UNKOWN ERROR and the phone boots up in recovery mode again with the itune and usb connector image. OK no problem I thought fire up ibrickr 0.91 and horror...... it cannot find the phone, I think it expect a 1.1.3 and 1.1.4 iphone and now the unit I have is in 2.0.1....

Well I tried so many option and google for at least a good 20 minutes and finds nothing. So I figure I might as well do the restore to 2.0.2 then quickpwn it or lets see from there. While downloading it I played the iphone and notice that if I were to hold the power and home buttton for more than 20 second it power down and I am able to do the DFU, WOW hehe..... I just shift restore it back to the image that I build for my son now... So it is now working but I am not sure about the cydia update issue.

Will update later.

jackdon.

Added on September 2, 2008, 9:18 amHmm...

Answering my own post biggrin.gif it seems the posix error is due to bandwidth issue at the repository site. So looks like there are lots of iphone upgrading to 2.0.1 tongue.gif
