hi
some info from the internet regarding life cycle ... juz to share Life Cycle Scorpions live from two years to as long as 25 years in captivity. Most species mature within a year or two. They go through ecdysis/molting and there are no significant changes except when males reach maturity their pectines (combs, sensory appendages) increase in size and the pedipalp chelae (hands) also become more robust in many species. The stages between each molt, beginning with immediately after birth, are called instars (i.e., a newborn scorpion is in its first instar). There are no more molts upon reaching maturity, which is usually in the 6th-9th instar depending on the species. So essentially, if you have a '2nd instar' Desert Hairy Scorpion, it means that the animal has went through ONE molt so far (See The Nothing's Post). After typically 6 or 7 molts (possibly more, depending on the species) the animal will become adult, from subadult. So i think new born/Scorplings are 1st Instar, their first Molt/Moult would take them into their 2nd Instar stage. They undergo a complex courtship which has been called "promenade a deux". Gestation lasts from about 2-5 months (mostly buthids) to as long as 18 months. The scorpions are born alive, are truly vivparous, but oddly enough, there are two developmental types: apoikogenic and katoikogenic. Similar to ovoviviparity, apoikogenic scorpions are born with an outer covering and are gestationally nourished with yolk (Iuridae and Vaejovidae have very small amounts), but also receive some nutrients from the mother through the membrane and are therefore not truly ovoviviparous. Katiokogenic scorpions are born without a covering and lack yolk. Katoikogenic scorpions are unique in all invertebrates in that the embryos are nourished directly from the mother via an oral feeding apparatus called a diverticulum. book lung is a type of respiration organ used for atmospheric gas exchange and is found in arachnids, such as scorpions and spiders. Each of these organs is found inside a ventral abdominal cavity and connects with the surroundings through a small opening. Book lungs are not related to the lungs of modern land-dwelling vertebrates. Their name describes their structure. Stacks of alternating air pockets and hemolymph-filled tissue gives them an appearance similar to a "folded" book.[1] Their number varies from just one pair in most spiders to four pairs in scorpions. Sometimes the book lungs can be absent and the gas exchange is performed by the thin walls inside the cavity instead, with its surface area increased by branching into the body as thin tubes called tracheae. It is possible that the tracheae have evolved directly from the book lungs, because in some spiders the tracheae have a small number of greatly elongated chambers. Many arachnids, like mites and harvestmen (Opiliones), have no traces of book lungs and breathe through tracheae or through their body surface only. cheers This post has been edited by s98432512: Feb 7 2009, 01:33 PM |

some info i tot is may be useful
Glossary of Terms and Words used throughout -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aculeus: The point at the end of the Telson/Stinger section. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Arachnida: A large class of arthropods that are mostly air-breathing by means of trachea or book lungs, that include the spiders and scorpions, mites, and ticks, and that have a segmented body divided into two regions of which the anterior bears four pairs of legs but no antennae. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Arid: Lacking moisture, especially having insufficient rainfall to support trees or woody plants: an arid climate. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Arboreal / Arboreous: While this is mainly related to Tree dwelling Scorpions, it means pertaining to Trees or to be Tree like. Arboreous would indicate a Tree Dwelling animal or species. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Arthropods: Invertebrate animals of the phylum Arthropoda, including Arachnids, Crustaceans, Insects and myriapods. Generally referring to Creatures that are defined by having an Exo Skeleton with segmented bodies and paired articulated jointed limbs/appendages. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Book Lungs: Scorpions have 4 pairs of Book Lungs which they breathe through. As their name indicates, they are folded like a book. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Carapace: In arachnids, the carapace or peltidium is formed by the fusion of prosomal tergites into a single plate which carries the eyes, ocularium, ozopores (a pair of openings of the scent gland of Opiliones) and diverse phaneres. In a few orders, such as Solifugae and Schizomida it may be subdivided. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Carnivore: Flesh eating, eater of Flesh. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chela: Pincers or Pedipalps, the front set of limbs used for gripping things with which give Scorpions one of their most recognised features. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chelicerae: Pincer like mouth parts that are very articulate. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CITES Listed: Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Colony: 2 or more Scorpions sharing the same enclosure or living space where the can interact with each other. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Exoskeleton / Exo Skeleton: Cuticle or outer shell like case. Tough outer "skin" that protects the inhabitant. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Faunarium: Is a Plastic Terrarium. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Genital Operculum: Genital operculum covers the reproductive organs of the scorpions (genital orifice of females). In the male, the genital operculum is completely separate. A pair of genital papillae may protrude from the posterior part of the operculum for males of some species. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gravid: A pregnant Female Scorpion. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Humidity: Humidity is the amount of water in the air. Water exists in three different forms: liquid, solid (ice), and gas (steam). Humidity refers to the quantity of water in its gaseous form, or water vapour, that is in the air. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Indigenous: Native of a Place or Area, place of origin. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Instar: Stage of development of a Scorpion, new born/Scorplings are 1st Instar, their first Molt/Moult would take them into their 2nd Instar stage. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Invertebrates: A Creature with no backbone. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Metasoma: The main part of the "Tail" of a Scorpion. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Molt/Moult: Shedding of the outer Exo Skeleton/Skin/Shell. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nocturnal: A creature that lives primarily at night time and hides or sleeps during daylight hours. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Papillae: A small nipple like projection. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Peat: Peat is an accumulation of partially decayed vegetation matter. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pectines: A body structure or organ resembling a comb. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pedipalps: Chela or Pincers, the front set of limbs used for gripping things with, these are one of a Scorpions most recognised features. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sclerotization: The hardening of a Scorpions Exoskeleton after a Molt/Moult. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scorplings: Scorpion young, baby scorpions. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Substrate: They type of surface or covering to be used for your Scorpions Enclosure, such as Peat or Vemiculite. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Telson: The Stinger, part of the Scorpions tail containing the Sting section. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Terrarium: A small enclosure or closed container in which selected living plants and sometimes small land animals, such as turtles and lizards, are kept and observed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Terrestrial: Living on or in the ground; not aquatic, arboreal, or aerial. One that lives on the land, as opposed to in water or in the trees. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vivarium: An enclosed area/Enclosure that can contain an ecosystem to sustain Plants or Creatures not usually native to the place they are being kept. This can be either in the form of a Glass or Plastic tank type, or a mesh structure through to a Wooden Hybrid of the previous materials. It can be used to support or house many types of creatures or fauna. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Viviparous: A Creature that gives birth to live young.
