Hi Rnk,

Buddha pine is a real full day tree require maximum sunlight and lots of water (but not water logged)
Move your buddha out from the place as shown in your photo. Allow the soil to dry up before watering.
The leave will con't to drop and may even drop more once you have moved it out. If after 1 week no sign of new leaves growing
back, you will have to check the roots and change the soil materials.

From your photos, I noticed that most of your bonsai materials are full day species except boxwood.

There are many parasites growing on this cucur attap. The parasite's root suck up nutrient from the main tree and eventually kill it.
Remove all the parasite, mosses growing around the stump of the tree is fine. Dry brush the stems, brush away any rotten dry wood, apply (brush on) 2 times sulfur lime solution to the draft or dry wood only to prevent it from rotting and getting disease.
As for the cascading plant, remove and pot it to a tall pot, it looks better in it.
Cucur attap is a full day spacie required good sunlight.
Space out your trees, you must at least have, say 1 to 1.5 ft space in between each of the trees in order to promote healthy grow.
If you keep your cucur attap longer in congested condition, the leaves will turn yellow and drop.

Hi Rnk,

Don't mind i go direct to the point. My opinions might not be so pleasant.
You have bought some good materials but some are actually not well maintained for sometimes. It will require patience and skill to put them back to good shape.
The immediate impression given to me from yr photos is that yr trees are in congestion environment not knowing the nature of each of the specie.
If you are willing to take my comments, I will con't tonite.

This tall thin Chinese black Pine looks miserable.
I'm sure the one who sold it to you must have removed all the yellow needle leaves leaving behind the small pad of green ones at the tip of each branch in order to make it look nice.
There are deep wire cut in the main stem. However I believe this black pine might have got used to our climate here because it is still growing.
Put this out in a half shady area let it get at least half day of sunlight and see how it will get on.

That's Thailand Murraya microphylla, it's this coming Chinese New Year's fengshui plant.
You can buy one home if you like, it's easy to maintain, just trim to keep it in it's original shape and keep it in a half shady environment.

Not bad. rclxms.gif

Trim a little of the apex so that it won't give people a heavy head feeling.

This is an awesome boxwood(Buxus harlandii) belongs to a bonsai buddy in Kuching.
It's old enough, with good nebrai (floating roots), very good cork bark stem and branches. And how I wish I can have a material like that! drool.gif

Attached Image

With his consent, I can post it up here with my suggestion on how to improve it's look.
My suggest is that to work on the foliage first. Changing pot will come later.
An extensive cut back is actually required to allow to grow back before shape.
Hopefully the following can give the basic idea how to do it.

Attached Image

Cut become botak, something like this.

Attached Image

Then allow it to grow back for 10 months to a year, feeding it with a little fertilizer once a month and water everyday.
It will grow to becomes thick mushroom shape bush, something like this.

Then cut away the small branches and expose the stem and inner part of the branches.
Trim the foliage canopy and let it grow for another 6 months or so.

Attached Image

This time beside trimming the foliage, choose the branches that you think that's not suitable to cut away.
By then it should have become quite awesome something like this.

Hi Bonsailelong,

I am Jerome from Singapore.
I have been a quiet reader since your 1st page.
Time to come out from the cave... "Singapore Mountain Tortoise here"

I have been playing with entry level bonsai for since childhood.
Still entry level till today.
Have learnt a lot from this forum, hope to learn more and hopeful meet you in person one fine day.

Favourite species : Shui Mui, Chinese Elm, Chinese Juniper...

Have been growing my plants with old traditional method of black earth...
Venturing into Black Volcanic sand and Burnt soil.
But have many worries about plants killed in the process.

I will try to post pics of my plants when I have taken their pics..

Regards
Jerome

Hi ichiglance,

The specie you have is called Feroniella Lucida. It's a terrible thorny specie that even the thorns at the young shoots can hurt your fingers.
Not many people like to train this specie to become bonsai. I've this one growing at the edge of a low rubble wall but yet to have any intention of shaping it.
Although this specie is thorny, but it's foliage(leaves) has the characteristic of natural flat shape.

Attached Image

As for your Lucida, it has a good old looking big stump. But the branches have grown very much out of order.
My suggestion is to cut and let it re grow and guide it in the shape you want with wires.

Attached Image

The idea is something like the following photos down loaded from the internet.

Attached Image Attached Image Attached Image

You can go to google, search for " Feroniella lucida Bonsai" to look for bonsai images that you think you can follow.

Take care your your fingers buddy, when you are working on it! shocking.gif

Hi snowlion,

I go direct to the points.

1) We don't usually wash away all the soil at the roots of wrightia or shui mui unless there is infection at the roots.
2) The black volcanic soil is too porous for this specie unless a lump of original soil is still kept at base of the tree stump and the volcanic soil is added to it.
3) Soaking the roots in water too long can drown the plant. Roots need air too.
4) Too much exposed roots doesn't look good only like exposed skeletons.
5) Hope you have not cut and remove all the small hair like roots leaving only the big one. The small hair roots are the main absorbers of water and nutrient.

My suggestions.

1) Replant your shui mui with ordinary soil (ready mix) type and cover the roots up to the bottom line indicated.
2) Cut the top part as indicated.
3) Apply wound paste to the wounded part to prevent the stump from rotting.

Hi kermit,

Your wrightia looks good! Pluck away all the remaining leaves and let it has as much sun light as possible.

Pluck away all leaves until botak. Post horizontal photos front n back. Might need to thin out some branches.
