i think there's a problem with a product that is too famous. The problem is that it is overprice. sad.gif

Hello all! I noticed purple-ish streaks and flashes on the LCD when i shoot an object with the sunlight directly ahead of me

Is this a normal occurance?

It's normal. Just don't point it at extreme light source for a long time, like 30 sec. You will burn your sensor.

Oh okay, thanks for the info. Damn, must becareful now when shooting with the sun shining in all its glory.

And guys, do you all shoot mainly in RAW or JPEG? If JPEG, what film mode do you choose? (Standard, Dynamic, Vibrant or the likes...)

I've been shooting in Vibrant and found that when i take pics of trees and flowers, it looks slightly fake. But Standard tends to overdo on the white balance. Speaking of White Balance, do you keep it at AWB?

Usually I shot in jpeg. No time to explore RAW yet. For simple P&S, I use AWB, but for indoor picture, special lighting effect, I use pre-fix WB setting. I have bad colour judgement, later when view the picture in PC just realize it's all wrong tongue.gif I use Standard film mode. You may want to try Nature film mode for nature. Dynamic and vivid is more suitable for shallow/matte colour (i.e. spectrum that near the grey scale), when you want the picture to be more dramatic and lively.

So when you use dynamic and vivid mode on primary colour, (red, green, blue), your photo will be over saturated, and cause your pictures of flowers and trees look fake.

For better result, you can adjust the brightness, contrast, sharpness and noise reduction of individual film mode, and save it as custom mode.

Thanks Aurora, I think I'll stick to Standard and Nature. Will try to upload my pics soon, no time to host it sumwhere also.

Btw does this forum allow for linking to Flikr/Picasa, or it has to be ImageShack>?

i've searched through few camera shops in penang, so far only found 1 black unit, other shops ran out of stock(there are a lot of silver color out there). i was quoted for rm1599 included 4gb sd and case for the black color lx3, is it reasonable ?

Does anyone feel that the LX-3 underexposes often?

I just took my first batch of photos with it and I find that quite a number are underexposed. I'm using matrix metering btw. The next time I go out I'm going to make sure I take test shots first and inspect the histogram.

Yes, it generally under-exposes by more or less 1/2 stop to 1 stop.
This is basically good for photos in general, because it helps keep more details in the photo for post processing.
Over exposing is much worse compared to under exposing because it loses much more details and is harder to post process.

That price is quite reasonable.
Remember that the retail price for the LX3 is still RM1799.
Most of the guys here got theirs for around RM1650 with 4GB plus freebies like mini tripods and casing.
Your deal for a black unit is rare, bcoz stock for black is quite scarce now.

I don't agree. Losing shadow detail is just as bad as losing highlight detail.

What I don't understand about the LX-3's meter is that at times there's clearly headroom for a brighter exposure, but the camera underexposes, losing the shadows and dynamic range. I'll upload some examples later.

I had your same perception on exposure b4.
I felt it was silly to think that under-exposing is better than over-exposing....
But this is what the real pros said in magazines and stuff I read.
Might not be the "truth", but i m just telling u what i know.
Probably has something to do with the way data is stored when taking photos....

Hey, you're right. If over expose by 1 and underexpose by 1, I'll choose underexpose
anytime. And we can always set the camera to always +1/3eV wink.gif

For those who doubt this, u can simply do a simple experiment urself.
Try under-expose the scene u r taking by 1 or 2 stops, then over-expose the same scene by 1 or 2 stops.
Then try to post process the same shots and see which works better for u... wink.gif

Read the same topic/argument about whic is better (under or over expose) somewhere here in LYN also.
But I think no conclusion one.... sweat.gif

I wanna ask for some thoughts abt the JPEG compression.
Do u guys use Fine or Standard setting?

On a recent trip overseas i almost ran out of memory so i switched to the more economical setting. The image quality difference that resulted was not discernible to my eyes.
I wonder whether anyone has any experience/data abt this?

I found a deal of black LX3 at RM1650 bundled with 4GB card and a camera case.

I would say accurate exposure is always better than underexpose. Haha~

Hi people.
I'm like 98% sold on getting LX3 but I appreciate it if you guys can answer a few questions I have regarding cameras in general... I'm a noob and a wanabee you see...

1.  There is no way I can add more zoom to it yes? Since I won't be able to change its lens? (only DSLR cam can yes?)

2.  2.5x optical zoom "sounds" really pathetic when I see cameras out there with 10x instead... is this how you compare zoom? or is it related to the lens as well?  ie... I cannot compare zoom power directly between cameras without taking into account the lens?

3.  What are the recommended accessories for this camera? Is the included stuff with the camera sufficient?

4.  Can someone recommend a good shop for the above camera? Waranty is 1 year yes? Anyone shop offering more?

Thanks!  My only regret is not setting down my foot and get a camera BEFORE my melbourne trip... I spent the whole trip regretting my error... ah... WOE is me...  *cries*
Limsy the noob... obviously.
