Last Wednesday went to Low Yat Plaza....looking for Seagate Black Armor NAS440 for my office use. After 2 hours scouting around....I don't see anyone selling this NAS. blush.gif  Any idea where to get it and how much??

Any other NAS suggestion instead of this Seagate??I mean with higher speed(both read & write) in a gigabit environment....

My office is just a small one with 5 staffs. However, needs lots of storage for pictures and 3D files. And of course to prepare for the future and torrent also...huhuhu

Thanks in advance..
*
You can try synology with 4 or 5 HDD model and expandable. You need to plan carefully in order to safe guard your data and future.

My office is using Synology ds107+ for data keep. My singapore branch office is using synology too.

Hei, have you notice that the synology have a wifi setup to your wifi modem router? I just found out when install new firmware to my NAS and read the new manual.

You need to stuck a wifi doggle to the NAS usb port and configure it. Your wifi router should be able to detect it.

Now you can place your NAS anywhere without network cable. I wonder how fast the speed will be.

Sorry, I didn't check. You got to go to the website and check the wifi doggle compactible.

I have 1 ovislink wifi doggle. But did't try to set it up. Cause I think the speed won't be that fast. Unless go for N type.

1) All synology model can do all this DL. Not just 409+. The firmware is same for all the model. Just some function enable and disable for certain model. But I don't have experience using rapishare and others direct DL. I m using torrent.

2) All HDD must be same size. In my case is 2TB HDD x 4pcs in raid 5= 6TB + 1 HDD for fault tolerance. (Actual usable size is 5.44TB) Not neccessary same model and brand. But advise make it same. You can mix HDD size and use "synology std raid" to raid it. This advantage is for you to replace the HDD 1 by 1 without hurt your wallet. And still can max out the HDD size.
* Yesterday start upgrade my 409+ to 4 HDD, format to raid 5 and connect to new APC UPS. Still formating till now. Already more than 14hr. Damn slow. yawn.gif  UPS running find which show correct ups model and remain 1875sec. Or 30min backup time.

Now don't no how to migrate the data to new HDD. hmm.gif
*
if you are looking at how to migrate your synology NAS data from old to new, you can PM me or call our support centre 03-2143 1823 or email to sales@midispecialist.com , I will call you personally.

BTW, this is free service for synology NAS user.

I see mostly hardware side are not much different. I think the important is the software and the firmware side. That make the NAS interesting to use.

Synology keep improving the firmware and listen to customer suggest. Every few mth come out a new firmware for upgrade. The good is, even old model still can be upgrade with the latest firmware.
*
in fact, synology will release major firmware upg : march and Sept every year and minor firmware upg from time to time.

For example, until today, they still release firmware for year 2007 NAS product , model lide DSx07 series.

which I think is good for money.....

if you just want to transfer file.... u can use the File Station function in Synology. this is a web page interface, u can drag and drop your file from local HDD to NAS or from folder A ( in NAS) to folder B ( in NAS) , this is same your time.

due to the limitation of browser , it only allow to upload file size less than 4GB (single file) for Mozilla and 2GB ( single file) for IE.

But I feel the web base file transfering speed is a bit slow beside the file size limitation. I use FTP client to transfer which more faster speed. Or map the drive and use explore drag and drop. Which too is fast compare web page interface. I use web page transfering when I far away from the NAS.

My migrating is less problem and faster if I have an extra HDD to transfer all the file from the old HDD. Which I can transfer back to synology NAS after upgrading. But I don't have an extra HDD. The synology file system is ext3 raid type which make me difficult a bit since I only know windows base.

To transfer back the file, I need to convert the partition into image file and store into the NAS. The image file is over 700GB which I don't have an extra HDD to store it. That converting and transfering take full 24hr. Than next I need to mount the image disk and open the file to extract it out one by one into the NAS. That is why it take so long time. yawn.gif

Hi denhock. WTA,

I am facing some problem with network backup over internet with synology NAS. It seems like not working with both backup to synology server or resync compactible server. Here is my setup.

DS107+ in office and DS409+ at home. Both Network backup enable and showing NetBackup folder in the directory. When doing configuration in the backup system till the end, it will show this error nessage:

"Connection failed. Please check your network setting" or " Failed to connected to the destination server"

I ve tried with few server or ip data enter:

http://servername.xxx.xxx
http://servername.xxx.xxx:5000
servername.xxx.xxx
servername.xxx.xxx:5000
ftp://servername.xxx.xxx
servername.xxx.xxx:5000
http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:5000
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:5000

All fail to connect. rclxub.gif Can you guide me what is the correct way to configure the network backup? smile.gif

did u open port 837 at your router

Note: for off-site backups, the following ports need to be opened on the remote DiskStation ( both party)

* 873 = Data Channel
* 22 = Encryption Channel, if used

about the server name or IP: you can

1) servername.xxx.xxx
or
2) WAN IP for the remote DS.

u can try to use the WAN IP of the remote DS first and if work than u try the servername.xxx.xxx

BTW, did u set any rule in Firewall ( in the DS) ? if yes, please enable the access right for the network backup as well as remote backup.

Thanks for the feedback. smile.gif

I was able to backup the file to my home NAS from office. But haven't try it out from home to office. It seems like the problem is from the open port 873 or 22 in the router. Both router party have been port open with this 2 no. No error so far.

Damn why the manual didn't mention about this port open. rclxub.gif
