This might be too soon, but I think its safe to say her character might be 'killed off' in Episode 8. I don't see how General Leia could 'suddenly' disappear from Episode 9... unless CG character is used.
I think if done respectfully, General Leia's "departure" can serve as both a tribute to her legacy and a send off for a beloved character.
That said, there should be slight directional changes in the script and since we are a year away, I really hope there is sufficient time for these changes and no delay in the film release.
Regarding the trailer, I think they have already cooked up a nice Episode 8 trailer since Rogue One is out and the initial release hype starting to go down. But since Carrie Fisher's sudden passing, we might now have to wait a bit longer ~ late Jan/Feb my estimation.

I think the death of General Leia is already in planned and shot for Episode 8..but with the passing of Carrie, they will evaluate and reconsider if the death is respectful enough with passing of the actor, or they need to change it.
There was a time when the SW prequel showed padme died because of broken heart, after givin birth to the twins. I remember seeing some fans panning it online the ridiculousness of it, how medicine can "save" such case.
Ironically, in real life It's so sad to hear Debbie Reynolds, Carrie Fishers mom to lose her life because he just lost the will (wanted to be with Carrie)
Carrie, will always be remembered the princess in SW
