How does the maintenance cost differ from the 2.0L, 2.3L, 2.6L and 2.8L models? 2.6L and 2.8L is V6 engine is it?
Mercedes-Benz W124 still worth it?, Worth it as a first car for fresh grad?

Hi, just to add.
If there is no problem to buy cash, go for W124. go for the 111 engine (newer version) the black engine is the older version. Proton is also a good car, but if you want a luxury feel of driving go for W124. try to go to this forum- mybenz or merz club. you could get some info here. If you a thinking of being fast and furious - go for japanese car. They make fast and good car. However considering that W124 is 20yrs old. it doesn't perform its age. it easily could be a better car to drive then proton after your restoration project. and of course it could last another 10-20 years. simply because, Mercedes don't grow old..they simply become vintage. this you seldom find in proton of japanese car. Spare parts, well there are a lot of chop shop (kedai potong) plus many workshop could maintain merz. Fuel consumption compare to proton for a 220E about the same 8.8litre for 100km. but myvi or vios will perform better in terms of fuel consumtion. If in the future, you have an intention to drive a newer version of Merz, then play around with w124 first. |

QUOTE(derix @ Apr 15 2009, 12:14 PM) Hi KVACKS, how much u bought tat babe? I got one 260E, yr 91, Manual asking for 27k. How is the FC for town riding and Hiway? Thanks. i'm not sure about FC for a manual car coz the one which i got its auto and its definitely more than my honda city by 30% - 40% if i stop and start often. but on the highway FC doesn't matter coz driving this car on the highway is all about comfort.I got mine at 26k, think i overpaid by 2k coz had to replace the headlamps and alarm system last week. |

Why people comparing buying myvi is better FC?
it is totally different class already. Personally, I think driving Merc is totally different feel. Even it is a old mer. ok, Not trying to compare to proton, but u know the different a 3 year proton compare to a 86 merc. maybe 90s. For someone want to buy a merc, it is totally different from buying a Jap, or local car. Maybe can buy 190E. small engine, smaller size also one of the over engineered merc. cheaper least than 20K. Erm...want to cry ady donno want to buy 190E or not. any good merc repair shop at penang island? if just student..buy second hand kancil. cheap in petrol n maintainance. dont compare kancil maintaince with old merc as i mention it is totally different class n quality. |

QUOTE(shift2 @ Feb 4 2009, 01:02 AM) driver side rectangle means long mirror surface. when a driver position being closer to a mirror , then the mirror need to be longer to deflect wider view(less blind spot) i have this question also... but then i have to parelel park my brothers w124... its hard cost this thing is a baheemoth but the large side miror make it a breeze since that its posible to see the right rear wheel... easier to see longkang or any unwanted objects and make u parelel park like a pro... i guess thats why its for... to make merc owner parelel park like a prowhile passenger side mirror being placed further from the driver position so only need less mirror surface(square) to reflect the image back to the driver . this only play with view angle.hope u understand wat i trying to tel..lol |

if you're smart enough when doing survey, u could have bought a Merc which is tip top cond yet in reasonable price.
Thus don't need to do much or any repairs. tip top cond doesn't mean the paint must be bling bling... if u don't know how to choose a second hand car, ask an old timer or classic car owner choose for u. they know what to check. Merc, FC is not high like what others are complaining. ofcaz it's higher abit than proton. but your life on stake is priceless. some say maintenance and parts are expensive, but i say the parts for merc can withstand much better than local cars. |

Hello everyone..
Well i am fresh doctor... planning to get a car... i am not into our malaysian cars, even if i get one, with my salary ( 3600 to 4000 rm) i guess ill have to take a 9 year loan plan, and paying up monthly about 600 rm..(2nd hand msian car???? no way man!!! brand new within a 4 month also ada problem). so i tot of getting a used mercedes or a bmw.... mercedes 190e or 230e ... within rm 30k... with a five year plan ill be paying around within 600rm... i know the fuel consumption is high for a 230e but i'm planning to install NGV... i dont know about the maintanace.... so which car is cheaper and easier to maintain , BMw e36 190e or 230e?? my uncle owned 190e then he upgraded to 230e.... according to him 190e was better in performance and maintanance..... i can get a 190e cash ( rm 15000 to 20000) but 230e with downpayment and the rest monthly.... e46 looks better but i heard the maintanance is exp... so guys do advise me upon the matter.... in summary, 190e 230e or bmw e36....and i am not looking for a long term...cheap , durable, reliable easy maintanance car! thank you |

bmw e36 definitely much more sporty drive than 190e and w124. 328i is very good for spirited drives. only advantages for w124 is more rear space. e36 and 190e has terrible rear legroom
so you always bring family or friends at the back? are they tall? they appreciate comfort? |

To answer most of TS concerns: No bullshit.
1.) Can you afford with 2k salary with W124? No - if you have high fixed commitments such as house, loans, insurance etc Yes - If you can set aside RM 800 monthly for your baby W124 (Inclusive of Fuel and repairs) 2.) Cost of maintaining W124 fleet Reasonable. Compared with sending Proton into SC, repairing W124 is still cheaper. 3.) Common problem with that car (AKA manufacturer defects, not wear and tear) None really. Power window failure? No Engine over heating? No Gearbox related? No 4.) Common maintainable parts Engine mounting, 2 pieces if im not mistaken. Will cost less than RM500 if you know where to get. Will last more than 2 years under normal road conditions. Engine - Standard engine maintenance. Change your oil on time. Recommended to use Semi Syn. Check for is oil leak or white smoke or sludge build up. Make sure when you test it, it is smooth. Gearbox - Standard. Change it on time. Check for oil leak and gear not engaging. Break Pad & Disc - Normal wear and tear. Use original pad if you want your breaking to be quiet. OEM is alright, might sound like lorry breaking. Ori pads will cost about RM500-600 per car OEM pads will cost around RM300+ per car Suspension System - Rarely needed to change. Will most probably last the entire life of the car. Check if there is any squicky sound and turning is smooth. Radiator - Use only original Mercedes coolant. Wont cost much, about RM30+ per bottle. Remember to check water level. Don't trust your sensor too much, old car's sensor isn't reliable. If possible, change the radiator water tank sensor, cost less than 100. Check for rust and leakage. Check the tubes are still elastic and no cracks. Timing Belt - Standard. Use bosch. Check for cracks or any wear and tear sign. Change it immediately. Power steering - Just make sure that there are sufficient lubricants. Check for red oil substance on the floor. If there are, chances are from power steering leakage. Note: W124 might be more prone to power steering oil leakage due to the heat close to engine bay. Alternator & Battery - Voltage should be between 13.5 to 14v during idle. ------------------------------------------- Things to check before you buy: A.) All of the above B.) Rust - very important (This is not MCQ) ---------------------------------------------- Expensive repairs: (Variable, depending on how serious, but i will give you the worst case scenario) Gearbox rebuild - Maybe around RM2k Engine full overhaul - Maybe around RM4k ECU? - Cheap, buy from chop shop. Very rarely spoil. Suspension system - About RM2k Sunroof - Don't even bother to repair it. Will kill you. Just sealed with silicon at the edges. Just my 1 cent. |

Just my 1 cent. i dont get people's fascination over local cars when there are so much value in the used car market im not a dealer nor am i someone selling used cars i just like to view the used car market as hidden gems waiting to be found by the right owner my uncle owned a 300ce cabriolet while my dad is still using a 200e (1992) 300ce's problems lie only in its electronics but the car is uber solid and ultra reliable whereas the 200e is more on the wear and tear side like the radiator, air cond system, bushings, beltings, paint, interior upholstery, and minor minor stuff (but bear in mind, these are due to my dad's under usage of that car cuz he drives less than 10km every day) my good friend who's a lecturer in the UK is using an E60 AMG (super cheap in UK) even this one's maintenance is cheap buying proton cars, not only its not reliable, its not safe, maintenance is somewhat higher in the long run and ur bound to die in accidents this is also the case for perodua one good example is this: my friend drove his dad's e500 and hit my other friend who drove a myvi SE (baru beli) - langgar in university back then bumper blakang myvi pecah and costs the guy rm700 for a new original one whereas ciplak is rm450 mercedes' damage???? - scratched bumper |
