Nice one. US$499 right? I'll wait and see on this one .... not on my critical must buy list. Also dvd playback is by default region locked unlike other Oppo dvd players iirc. Though I read it can be unlocked. Would be nice if they just unlocked it prior to shipping.
*
Yup, that's the price I got it at. Yes, it is region locked for DVD and plays region 1 and region 0 discs. I believe there will be soon aftermarket mods to make it region free. Anyway, it plays SACD and DVD-A, so lets see if it all that good. Will compare all this and BD playback when I receive it. Compared to PS3 and Pioneer DV-600 (for SACD).

You'll be getting it shipped direct from USA or via Singapore?

Looking forward to seeing your review of the Oppo.

From US. I am really looking forward to check out this set.

Bro,
Watch out on the Dune. They have not been updating their firmware properly and a lot of the new Fox titles do not play well on them. You might want to wait another 6 monhts before getting this...

Thanks for the info, bro.  I know there is another one can play mkv is OPPO BDP-83.

Oppo BD-83 can play mkv but does not support NTFS USB drive. So in essence, you are restrictred to 4GB files sizes.

the difference is minimal compare to PS3 decode using software?

If anyone has the Panny BD60 in Pg, we can do a comparison with Oppo in 2weeks.

Arrived in US address. Friend will test to ensure no problems, then he will bring when he comes over.

U need to register with US address. I 1st registered with Malaysian address, then sent them a mail with a new address of the US address then, they added me in for the Pre-release list.

How much does it cost you and from where you bought?  On-line or local shop?
*
Online with US address. Cost is USD499 and USD18 for shipment. The shipment cost to Malaysia I am not sure, I might have someone coming over from there so shd be free.

Indeed it is not placebo. I did some reading on AVS and many people also say BD60 superior to PS3. Of course there is also the Oppo 83, waiting for anfieldude to review his (lucky fella).
*
Let's see if there is indeed a difference. Some BD players add some processing to the high def images, thus causing some minor differences in the picture quality. Remember image processing is applied to the image, the way each player does it might have slight variances thus causing differences.

Agreed. Different manufacturer uses different type of video processor. For panasonic, it uses its own Panasonic UniPhier processor which can be found in player like Denon DVD2500BT & Marantz BD8002. Others like Sigma, Broadcom and etc.

Which is more superior, i have no idea.
*
Hard to say. For 1080p/24 most if not all of them do a very good job. Just the slight extra making each different. Not necessarily better. The Uniphier is known to add some sharpness to its images. For those who start seeing artifacting, you might need to reduce the sharpness in the player. If u r happy, then don't change anything. I believe the Oppo uses Anchor Bay's VRS chip, the sammy's 2500 onwards uses the much tauted HQV Reon. Again, you will see a significant difference in each one for DVD upscaling but less so in BD playback.

Using normal mode as well. I did not switch on the air cond. Maybe is my transformer problem qua.
*
Just in case, you might want to check the transformer rating and ensure that it is sufficient to power the BD60. The BD players are supposed to run cool.

sweat.gif  sweat.gif Did I poison you guys so badly? I thought it was on mild dosage as there are more to come....
Told you. Dare to even say if not good, go and throw BD60 at me  laugh.gif  Jz joking.....

Time to shift this to HD65 owners for what they are missing. Aiks.... started poison again  blush.gif

I just got home from Selangor. Another new HD65 member in da house  rclxms.gif

Anyway, the only thing that I don't like abt BD60 is the loading tray. It is a bit rough when closing compare to Pioneer (all my Pioneer DVDPs close gently).

Taukeh, did you notice that the LFE is better now?
*
Good for you guys. Anyway, when I get the chance I would really like to calibrate a HD65 from a PS3 and a HD65 to a BD60. Need to arrange a trip to KL soon. I am happy with the "pop" that the PS3 gives on my Pioneer. Need to see if the Oppo is any better.

i guess oppo can do a better job... most properly the top player along with pioneer elite...
*
The oppo is not here yet. Let's see if it does any better than the PS3. Maybe one day, can be paired with a full HD to see the difference. Anyway, I have seen the HD65 in action, its pretty good. The reason I think it seems better paired with the PS3 could be the more neutral picture that the BD60 gives out compared to the PS3 that probably needs grayscale calibration with the HD65. Anyway, once I get to see the picture on a BD60 HD65 combo and compare it to the BD60, PS3 combo, we'll see. I also believe that the PS3 is a great player but a standalone player shd be better but have not had one to compare. But I do believe that for audio decoding the AVRs tend to sound better compared to the PS3 decoding.

Hope you can make a side trip to Ipoh  notworthy.gif Then you can try calibrating a PS3 and BD60 to an AE3000.

Definately, will plan. I want to see the AE3000 in action...

so wat does a PS3 do using the linux OS + software to render the picture??

cikgu can explain abit??
thx smile.gif
*
Missed this before.

The PS3 uses its own Sony Cell Processor to do the video processing. Something similar to Panasonic's Uniphier but I believe more powerful. I believe if Sony wants they can improve the video processing algorithms in the Cell Processor, but that would kill their high end products ie, BD players...less money for them then. Sony can actually do more with the PS3 than they are doing now.

if i m not wrong

IBM guys told me the cell processor is owned by IBM technology... it just like a "CPU" processor... nothing MAGIX
*
It is a CPU processor but it was jointly developed by IBM/AMD and a wafer foundry. It is a 65nm cell processor and has a lot of processing power. All video processors are the same. The thing that drives that are algorithms. The Sony Cell processor is very powerful, the algorithms for video processing are also pretty good, just not as good as the stand alone video processors like ABT, Lumagen. So if Sony wanted, they could actually improve on the algorithms but I don't believe they will.

Edit : Just read that they are planning to change the 65nm to 45nm processor, increasing the processing power....imagine on a gaming machine

Watch Bedtime stories on DUNE using bd.iso files through USB connection to my DUNE...

result....PQ/AQ exactly the same as using physical blu-ray disc....DTS-MA lights like on my AVR and the sound also very chun.....

NO judder/delay noticed, just plug & play.

Applied the patches, now can play all region DVD and BD thumbup.gif

and the up- caller are better than PS3....rclxms.gif

Having problem with Audio CD playback now, but gonna upgrade to new firmware tonight to the latest one....should fix al the nagging problem...tongue.gif
*
Cool man...

Hope Dune supports firmware updates consistently. Some of the Fox titles are known to give compatibility problems with the Dune.

However, if converted to BD iso then I believe shd be ok...

Will PM u for details. Interested in the Region Free thing....

Spore is planning to price the Oppo BD83 at the same price SGD900 as well from SLT Technologies.

Of course the Oppo does not support BD iso and region free. So for that the Dune is pretty good. I believe the Dune uses Sigma Designs chip inside.

Someone asked earlier where it was made, Israel I believe. That is where HDI is from.

Next time I'm around, let's see how the calibration figures look like.
