That's also the reason i upgraded my avr recently
using HDMI to output signals to avr is much more stable
one cable to do the job
as compare to analog out with so many cables that are prone to signals interference

The avr upscaler can be tweaked? Any idea Faroudja chipset can be tweaked also?  hmm.gif
*
The DCDi Faroudja does not have the capabilites to allow the tweaking.

The HQV Reon is a more powerful chip and there are additional noise reduction and other features that you can play around to improve the picture if u deem necessary.

The HQV Realta also has the capability as does the Anchor Bay VRS.

Only high end avrs come with these chipsets  shocking.gif
no wonder can be tweaked  hmm.gif

can the low end yamaha avrs that come with Anchor Bay be tweaked?
*
Not that I know of. It has to be enabled by the AVRs. Yamaha does not give that option. I believe Yammy uses the ABT chip for scaling only right? I need to dig out the info.

The tweaks that I am talking about are normally Noise Reduction, Brightness, Contrast. On the new Onkyo 876 they enabled the Grayscale Calibration which is a 1st. Some others are Chroma, Hue among others.

>>>>The DMP-BD60 has onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio Essential. That means it can decode those soundtrack formats so they can be played back on almost every HDMI-capable AV receiver. Bitstream output is also supported, if you'd rather the decoding be done in your AV receiver. (DTS-HD Master Audio Essential differs from standard DTS-HD Master Audio in that it lacks decoding for a few legacy DTS DVD soundtracks formats such as DTS 96/24, ES, ES Matrix, and Neo:6. It still decodes all the high-resolution Blu-ray DTS soundtracks.) <<<<

What does it simply means ~~~~ can it play DVD DTS-ES/EX
Thanks
*
The processing cannot be done in the BD60. However, it can bitstream the DTS-ES/EX codec to you AVR for processing. This is norm for almost all BD players.

Yamaha rxv3800. Sorry I don't get you. Meaning I have to upgrade my yammy's firmware or the BDP's? I'll try to upgrade my BD60 firmware this weekend. Thx for the pointer on the popping issue. I won't call it a pop though. At -20dB, it's more like an explosion!
*
Sounds like the DTS-HD MA bug. The firmware upgrade should be for the amp....

Denon in mandarin is 'tian loong', which after translate back to england becomes sky dragon.

Thanks for the explanation....

One another note, I was told that the Panny BD60 sold in Malaysia is regionfree for DVDs. Can anyone confirm that? That's good news.

Which blu-ray player should I get, I need a quality player which looks classy from the outside - my budget is RM5,000 +/-
*
While it is way below your budget of RM5K, I would advise you to try out the Oppo BD83. It was ranked 5th (compared to the Denon DVD-A1, Pioneer BDP09FD, Sony 3000ES and the Denon 3800) and with the rest almost 4-6X the price. I think it will complement ur 600M pretty well. You can even get it region free modded and it makes it pretty good at that point. It uses the VRS chip and has a Source Direct mode. You can get it from SLT Technologies in Spore for about SGD1K.

All my cables are concealed cables, and that has to be done during renovation. I've forgotten to include a cable for the center speaker during renovation. It was a rookie mistake and I'm not that bright, I know.  blush.gif

Of course I can add a center speaker now but that wouldn't look nice at all because of the dangling wire.
*
There are amps out there than can put out a Virtual Centre speaker, the only problem is that you would have to pre-out the 3 channels to the amp and there will be cables to conceal as well.... And it would be a true waste of your Z11 potential.

Sorry, Back to blu-ray player..

I thought by default, BD60 upscales to 1080p. I wasn't aware it can upscale to 'only' 720p/1080i. Like I said before, I'm surprised that it can play R1 DVD. So my guess is that local BD60s are region free. Unfortunately I don't have any R2 DVD to test.

Now the PQ depends on the source itself.

From my own experience, few titles can net good result like R1 Star Wars II, R1 LOTR trilogy extd version, R1 Private ryan, R3 Band of Brothers, R1 Magnolia & R3 Monster Inc. But others like R1 Aliens, R3 The Matrix, R1 Braveheart and  R1 Last of the Mohicans didn't quite cut it. The last of the Mohicans is the worst. Those two black bars on the right & left are just dem annoying.
*
I am pretty sure that the BD60 shd upscale to 1080p. Pls check your settings. Also the BD60 shd be able to extract 24fps from a NTSC disc.

hi,
I hope you know that it is not regionfree out of the box. The Dune 1st version was made region free by a firmware hack. It will probably come soon, but it will take some time for the guys to enable that option.... Other than that enjoy the set....

I'm still waiting for the shipping cost from them. I don't think it will be expensive as its only a player...

FYI, tthey use both UPS & US Postal (I forgot the actual name but i think this other service is stg like Pos Malaysia or Pos Laju)...

I think in SG its a bit overpriced at S$899 which totals up to around RM2.2k - RM2.3k ... The good side is, you can always send back for warranty but mine would be a hassle wink.gif
*
It actually depends on dimension and weight. I know the Oppo (8kgs) shipping thru UPS/DHL/FedEx was around RM600-800....So don't be surprised if it comes to be the same as SGD899 in the end.

How much is this Oppo BDP-83 and Dune? Which is a better unit?
*
Oppo BD83 is USD499 and SGD999 (with region free mod).

Dune was USD499 (up till July31) and USD599 now. It can be bought in Spore as well.

When you say better, what do you mean? What are you looking for?

Dune is more of a Media Player with a BD drive. It uses Sigma Designs SOC. It plays almost all formats and supports E-sata. It is aimed at a different market.

Oppo is a BD player with limited media capabilities. It uses ABT VRS chip. It has superior deinterlacing and scaling.

For sure, but it depends on what the person needs. If it is used for only BD, then i think the Panny BD60 is good enuf.

ar188,
I have seen some BD players even mess up 1080p/24fps signals.

I left out some other stuff, but if you are interested there is a colour space conversion as well.

BD is encoded in YCbCr 4:2:0.

All BD players need to do some colour space conversion.

The signal needs to be converted and sent out in YCbCr 4:2:2 , 4:4:4, RGB 0-255 or RGB 16-235.

Some chips do this very badly. Some convert the signal to RGB then reconvert to YCbCr. Some do the other way.

Some of the other things that a BD player needs to do is chroma upscaling error detection/correction and if necessary frame rate conversion and progressive signal reprocessing.

As I said earlier, some BD players convert a 24Hz signal to a 60Hz signal and then reconvert it to 24Hz. I know fo 2 players that do this and they mess it up.

BD players are different. Its just that it will not be noticeable unless you look closely. It is more prominent in displays that exceed 60inches.

Thankfully, the PS3 is a very good BD player in terms of PQ. Most BD players get the stuff almost 90% right. The 10% wrong people don't normally see unless they look.

The Dune is one heck of a set, I would like to get my hands on one to test out its capabilities. If you are viewing media, one thing that is important is the ability to handle non standard cadences. The Oppo does this well even though it is not touted as a media player. I want to test the Dunes capabilites of handling odd cadences to see how if fares.

Will you see all this on a BD? No, so if all u need is a BD player, save ur money and get a Panny BD60! It will keep u satisfied for many years to come.

even though the above symptoms and video artifacts sounds bad like chroma bug etc, in most cases people don't really notice them.. they just show up when playing test discs or only on certain  movie discs at certain parts of the movie.  main upgrades like full HD TV or projector will bring more improvement to visual quality than nitpicking on the current crop of BD player's minor visual flaws..

hence why I said the oppo doesn't really bring much food to the table compared to a RM900 BD60... cos 90-95% of the time the image comes out just well (using BD-60 as reference compared to oppo) especially with people using 42-50 inch screens..
while a dune is totally different set of capabilities although it's within USD100 price range from this oppo while probably within the same 90-95% visual performance of standard BD players like BD-60..
*
ar188,

I agree. My advise as earlier is for people only viewing BD, get the Panny BD60, it more than enuf.

If u have larger screens and you are a person who is detailed and fussy, get the Oppo or Pioneer players (heck even the Denon USD4000 is ok for u).

If u need SACD, DVD-A and want good DVD upscaling get the Denon or the Oppo.

If u need a media player and a BD player, no question get the Dune!

Display is the primary component of the HT, BD players and all are secondary.
