other than MMU,is there anymore foundation in law available in malaysia?

Hmm, if u want to be exempted from CLP then go for local uni's ie.UiTM, UM etc,..
other courses ie. Bachelor of Jurisprudence could be a choice smile.gif but if i'm not mistaken, u can't practise with BOJ kua o_O

Hi,

I've registered for the UOL (External) LLB degree after 2001 and am currently waiting for my final result. Just wondering, IF I should fail to obtain the required Lower 2nd Class degree as required to qualify for the CLP, what alternative routes can I go for in order to qualify to practice law in Malaysia?

ps: this is already my 4th year after passing my intermediate exam.

Thanks smile.gif

ur final results meaning part 2 also i would assume? hmm, can try taking up the arbitrator course? tongue.gif or become legal advisor in companies lor
there r no other ways unless u repeat ur degree or opt for BAR after that..unless u appeal and they accept ur appeal

clp is a course, recognition is by the lpqb. check the bar webbie, shud be the latest even tho it seems old. if you still doubt the list, or your particular uni is not on it, just email them to clarify

If you are taking the UoL External LLB programme, you will need to secure a minimum second lower honours in order to qualify for the CLP examinations.

If you are currently enrolled in one of the numerous twinning/transfer LLB programmes (2+1 / 1+2) available though, I don't think this ruling applies.

Anyone here who can confirm this? Thanks smile.gif

there are a whole list of questions you need to answer before you can determine where is the best place for you to read law...

(in no particular order)
1) Whether you intend to read law locally or overseas? if the latter then where?
2) Whether you are able to afford to go overseas? If so, for how many years? 1 or 2 or 3 or 4....
3) Do you want to practice eventually?
4) Do you want to be an academic?
5) Does uni ranking/prestige matter to you?
6) Do you intend to remain in Malaysia or like for some ppl. pursue a foreign degree in order to facilitate migration?
7) Do you think you can tackle a pure exam based LLB and do well?

...you get the idea...

Having your A level results will help you determine your options...

@minshuen:

University of Liverpool: 2+1: Pass all subjects in Year 2 at HELP in one sitting with an average mark of 60%.

Do try an extra bit of Googling though, all the information is available on this page here wink.gif

For UK transfer, a pass is only required for CLP. I'm sure abt UWE but not really sure abt others..but it may be around that mark i guess. xD

based on what i've heard, nope not really...especially compared to UOL LLB...just put in the effort even a 70% average would be achievable

My 2-cents to M'sians who want to be lawyers. This is roughly the route:

SPM -

STPM/ A-Levels -

LLB - Local University (4 years) - 9 months chambering - Called to the Malaysian Bar.

or

LLB - UK/Aus/NZ/ External UOL (3 years - although I have heard that it is usual to do a double degree in Australia to accompany the LLB) - CLP or Bar Vocational Course (Soon to be Bar Professional Training Course) (Called to the Bar of England and Wales) - 9 months chambering - Called to the Malaysian Bar.

or

LLB - 1+2 or 2+1 Twinning Programs - CLP or Called to the English Bar - 9 months chambering - Called to the Malaysian Bar.

Extra Notes:
1. Requirement for UOL external LLB is 2:2 to sit for the CLP while its 3:1 for the rest of the overseas degrees (I have heard that a pass may suffice but for now, some UK internal students have informed me that it's a 3:1).
2. Requirement for acceptance into the BVC/BPTC is 2:2. There is an online procedure for applying for a place and in this time and date, it has become very difficult to even secure a place, let alone sit for the course.
3. Difficulty of obtaining a LLB differs from place to place. For obvious reasons, some are easier than others. I will not be listing them lest I may sound unpatriotic or bias towards certain arrangements.
4. CLP - ~20% passing rate.
5. BVC/BPTC - ~40-60% depending on students' ability for the academic year.

All three terms are adopted.

The same applies elsewhere.

I reserve my comment on the CLP issue but do find out on other variables that materially contributed to the passing rate.

hi...i have a question...

durham university, UK is not recognized by CLP...
does that mean that i cannot study in that university if i want to
work as a lawyer in malaysia?
*
Look at Part II, paragraph 16 of the New Guidelines on Qualifications and requirements to qualify to sit for the Malaysian Certifiate in Legal Practice (CLP) Examination (For Law degrees from the United Kingdom).

Durham's Law degree is recognised for purposes of sitting for the CLP. However, as a matter of prudence, make sure that you refer to the Qualifying Board and not put any reliance on the guidelines alone.
