AirAsia Bhd will buy 76% of Indonesian low-cost carrier Batavia Air to expand in Southeast Asia’s biggest economy. AirAsia will benefit from Batavia Air’s strong agent network in Indonesia and will have a very positive effect on earnings over the next few years.

Can AirAsia Bhd buy majority stake in Batavia Air If it is PT Indonesia AirAsia which buys 76% share of Batavia Air that's certainly fine... I hope Batavia Air will merge with PT Indonesia AirAsia. The budget airline market is getting crowded. This post has been edited by river.sand: Jul 26 2012, 05:21 PM |

OK, now we get more details of the deal. It looks like the acquisition will be carried out in 2 stages. Ultimately AirAsia Bhd and Fersindo will own 100% stake of Batavia Air. The former will own 49% while the latter will own 51%. As I had expected, foreign firm can't own majority stake in Indonesia's airlines.

QUOTE(ham_revilo @ Aug 28 2012, 09:46 PM) Not sure if it is good news Its revenue for the last quarter increased slightly, but operating profit was actually lower. The higher profit was due to one-off disposal of 4% shares in Thai AirAsia. I assume Tony will re-invest the money. If not hopefully AA will give better dividend... Can somebody please explain this? ...the AirAsia Berhad investment in Thai AirAsia is now accounted for in accordance with MFRS128 Investments in Associates, which requires that the equity method be used. AirAsia Bhd and its Indonesian partner PT Fersindo Nusaperkasa have received the Indonesian government's approval to acquire budget airline Batavia Air.
A Dow Jones Newsire report from Jakarta had on Wednesday quoted Indonesia's air transportation director general, Herry Bhakti, that it was approved in principle.
