erm.. actually... hmm.gif free fall will be good to those who are in "accumulating stage" but a killer to those who are "eating the eggs" stage..

those "eating the eggs stage" (retired and living fully on their investments' income), if not asset allocated across asset classes... might need to eat alpo sweat.gif

doh.gif sorry lar, been off-coffee for a few days (on tea) to lower my irritate-ablility (been biting & barking at some colleagues too often, thus.. hehhe self-correction).

Emerging Markets ar - er.. hm.. i've not much in PFES hehe but quite a bit in PFEPRF though i treat that as REITs related.
Sorry ar - not much details %, i dont track that way, i track "Foreign" Vs "Domestic", and then by asset classes.

Anyhow.. i've squirrelled away about er.. 5% to 8% (depending on how itchy my hand is) of "net invest-able assets" just for bargain hunting <looks around 'ala squirrel in Ice Age looking for the Nut>. Waiting for blood..

Yeah - controlled / calculated burst modes' the best hehe.

BTW, scary lar now markets - REITs and their related ilks are running up as if on fire.
Although i've anticipated REITs to have a good run due to QEs & $ printing, i haven't seen REITs run like this before... while the general world market is see-sawing worried sweat.gif

That time some of us will be shooting fishes in a barrel tongue.gif... <MK looks on.. wistfully...>

BTW, received my latest "Personal Money" today. Some fellows saying 20% dip in MY market is "do-able" if a shock win happens at election.
Man, does these fellows have crystal balls or what?
20%? Good too if we can have GOOD changes hehehe
OR
Are these fellows saying it'll be a shock if the new doesn't take over from the old? tongue.gif
<sneaks a peek at the Mods.. not too political right?>

Anyhow, most of us here have kept a bit more dry ammo for this to happen thus, i'd say it's a good thing, right folks? notworthy.gif

QUOTE(gark @ Jul 24 2012, 02:32 PM)
Waiting for the exact bottom is tough.. it is better to see the P/E ratio of the exchange and gauge if it is a good deal to pick up gradually.

In the last crash, I was buying in lots with HSI at 18K (P/E 12), then at 16K, 14K, 12.5K (P/E <8!)and then purchase at rebound at 15K. Sold the fund in 2010 with HSI at about 20K for a nice tidy profit.  rclxms.gif At one time the fund is at -30%  sweat.gif .

Now with HSI at 19K and SSE at 2.1K, the china forward P/E is about 8.6

So to buy or not to buy?  tongue.gif

P/S Malaysia's P/E is currently 14.9, one of the highest in the world, due to our buoyant (EPF Supported) market...  brows.gif
*
Nah.. P/E 8.6.. 8 more ong hehe.

On a serious note, i usually take a peek at the PE and DY, just in case something weird at the time with PEs tongue.gif - happened to me before with local stock SHELL and a local REIT sweat.gif
A discount of 50% on average PE of 5 or more years is enough to entice 1/3 to 1/2 of my dry opportunity ammo laugh.gif

*
eh, got leh in end 2008 / 1st qtr 2009 - ok lar, NEARLY hit 50% discount of 5 years' average PE (for some counters)
I won't nit pick - 45% is as good as 50% for discounted PEs heheh

My answer - stay away from it tongue.gif

Dont lar Pinky.
Some ppl may not want to be as involved as U in their building of financial freedom.
U think so many people thinks like us meh - where "I AM THE ONE THAT CARES MOST FOR MY $ AND ASSETS" is our war cry, apart from "GET YOUR FILTHY PAWS OFF ME MONEY!" before striking people blind and deaf tongue.gif

Thank you PinkSpider, a friend of mine told me about their plan. Still dont know to invest in it or not. a few friends of mine invested and some didnt and was very against it as well i dont know why. And not you too asking me to stay away from it, it sounds really interesting and its by Hong Leong. Should it be safe?
*
Don't put SAFETY ahead of FREEDOM alone.
It may be safe but it also cannot get U your financial freedom if it's the main vehicle to your financial freedom.
As a side-cart - perhaps (as in a very small % of your total net worth) hehe tongue.gif

Wong Seafood said it well... biggrin.gif

To put it simply, endowment plans is quite safe, 99.99% won't lose u money (IF u hold to maturity i.e. do not premature cancel/withdraw), but its return probably won't beat real inflation. doh.gif

I'd suggest unit trust. But ifu are the type that needs ppl to force u to save money, perhaps endowment plans suit u. Cos its a financial commitment...u early withdraw/terminate, u lose part of ur capital sweat.gif
*
Hey, U confusing me lar tongue.gif.
1st U say "99.99% wont lose money",
then U say "probably won't beat real inflation"

In my tiny mind, if it probably won't beat real inflation, it ALREADY has lost lor, especially when i can't touch the donkey $ for umpteenth years.
UNLESS... it comes with nice changgih tax rebate (best) or relief (well, 26% is better than 0) heheh.

Rhetorical Qs ar Pinky, just using yr posting as a setup notworthy.gif

PE of 5? no lar bro - U reading too fast
"A discount of 50% on average PE of 5 or more years is enough to entice 1/3 to 1/2 of my dry opportunity ammo tongue.gif"
Average PE of 5 or more years lar.
PE of 5? er.. there were some REITs at those numbers end 2008 & 1st qtr 2009 but stocks like PBANK, LPI, etc. were more than PE of 7.

Fellow investors - dumb Q for Domestic Funds:
Possible post Election drop (Sep/Oct?)
VS
Possible QE3 by USA in Sep/Dec which will chase up equities in Asia

Which is more probable or they negate each other? tongue.gif
Just something to chew - food for thought heheh.
