What I meant actually is whether Peru,Abby, normal fur, sheltie are under the same genus and species name i.e are their scientific names the same?
*
Their scientific names are the same. They are all Cavia Porcellus.

I gotta aagree with bonai even if just a lil. smile.gif it is always good to know more than less. So do some research.

They all have the same scientific name but they vary in fur length, texture, color, etc etc. There ar many more types of GP that has not become commercially available to Malaysians yet or even if they are, at a very high price, like the teddy or even the Texel.

QUOTE(liette` @ Jun 21 2008, 08:14 PM)
I do not have guinea pigs. These things just pop up in my mind and I was browsing through this forum at the moment so don't flame me for not researching. If I have guinea pigs and still needed to be spoon-fed, I understand that it's wrong.

I was confused because their scientific name is the same which is Cavia Porcellus, which means same genus (Cavia) and same species(Porcellus). I was always under the impression that breed equates to species, hence the misunderstanding.

Take hamsters for example, you have Syrians, Robos, RC and WWs which all have different scientific names and are all totally different species.

What I thought was for example, Syrian = Normal coat, Robo = peru, RC = sheltie, WW = abby. Now I know that guinea pigs are of the same species, just different breeds.

I was confused between 'breeds' and 'species'. My apologies and thanks for your enlightenment.
*
blush.gif Actually I wasn't flaming anybody. sweat.gif Just encouraging a little research, as all good pet owners should. So very sorry for the misunderstanding if I caused any.

I get your misunderstanding. I was pretty confused myself at first.

hmm... dats called special..? hmm.gif
and they small hah..?

if they smaller than mine dats mean they very small la... sweat.gif

Actually it's quite common to see small size GP. All they eat is dry pellets and bread wat. How to grow big? Have to bring home and pump yourself.

No such thing wan la... They hike price bluff people. Special wat la.

Like in Pet Family, they took out all the black and white and pose them as real black and white syrians, remember? Actually most of them inside is sable banded, not real black and white syrian also.

Jamien : well... u still wan me to bring 1 syrian too?? laugh.gif sorry... no space liao xDD

hope my future GP will have the same attitude like ur girls.. well.. dun like to be cage with others GP.. means... I no need to bring back 2nd pig for her lol
*
smile.gif Don't worry. Your girl will be fine on her own if you brought her home alone and she got used to home. It's not necessary to give a GP a companion but they are colonial in the sense you CAN have more than one. They won't die without another GP as company.

You didn't get poisoned meh? Hehe...

but for gp...i really duno..
tht y only ask u all....
see whether anyone try it b4..
jamien got try b4?

Nezu and a few people says that it makes the hammie have softer fur. Honestly, my syrians already have soft fur without the britter bunny. And I'm not sure if giving bunny food to our GPs is a good idea since GPs and bunny has a different need right?

blush.gif GPs and syrians simply have different fur types. I doubt GPs will ever have such soft fur like suggies or chinchillas or syrians.

And crazymouse mentioned that there is a lot of coloring lor. Since the pellets are green and beige in color.

hmm.gif But I am thinking of trying the new mix with Britter bunny for my next prestige packet of food. Buying just prestige will kill my pocket so I'm thinking wanna mix prestige with britter bunny or habitrail.

Just to tell everyone, my GPs only eat GP food and vegetables. I'm trying to intro the supplement powder lar.

Good la...
And can share with us here. rclxms.gif

I also read about GP nutrition before.. but still not in serious research just read only..
*
smile.gif According to what I researched, GPs need the correct ratio of certain components that should be accomplished by adding the right amounts of certain veges and fruits in their diet.

blush.gif I'm still trying to make it out since the table is difficult.

bored.... was thinking if GP really got any special and rare color?
it would be good if I can find one for me laugh.gif

was google-ing bout it but... outside GP are FAT and CHUBBY!!!! lol
*
All Malaysian animals are smaller and skinnier than animals from outside our country. I suspect the fod we eat is also smaller. That's why our mums like buying imported fruits and veges.

hmm.gif So far what I call nice is a GP with proper color division o. Not like syrians so complicated.

My Girl Girl looks like the mottled black and white in the first pict. Except she is not mottles lar. Girl Girl looks like a panda. Black ears. Black markings around the eyes. black hind legs. Otherwise all white.

lol.. go ikano now..
they still hav 15+ GPs i think... go help them~!
pls... they need a good care... i cant afford anymore...
if not, i will clear their stock... hahahgaa laugh.gif
*
blush.gif I understand your good intentions but I will not buy petshop bred animals if I can help it. I refuse to let the petshops earn when they did little to help the GP survive.

Speaking of ikano, I once booked 2 small GP. There were only 2 at that time in Pet Safari. Look very young but very very cute. I'm suppose to come back for it about a few days later cuz I wanted to get a nice cage for them.

When I came back, the GPs missing already. I ask the fella, he said "sudah jual". Then I feel they are unethical cuz I booked with 20 each. He just gimme back the money.

I came back later and there was another guy on duty. he ask me what I want. I said "kat glass tank tu ada 2 baby GP yang sangat cute punya, dua hari yang lepas. Dah jual ke?"

The guy told me, "yang 2 tu? Dah mati lah. Kita ada stock lagi minggu depan. Datanglah minggu depan dan bolehlah kamu pilih".

I have no idea how to react to that.

Shahril : ur ava so cuteeee <3 what's tat? a GP? nice grey color..
*
Of course. What burn.. I make sure I tie each and every one of them and burn them with a cow poker. mwahahahaha.

From the fact they weren't honest enough to tell me that the GPs died. And they were perfectly healthy that day I saw them. It must have been something else la. I am a customer. how can they shove the money back to me without explanation as to what happened. Unethical.

Sharil: So cute your avatar! I thought was a beautiful grey baby GP until I saw the back part.

Any bonai-related discussions please proceed to Bonai Thread V6.. thank you..

i so fed up why my gp likes to jumpe around during bathe time..
like wanna cekik2 them to die and stay still there..
*
shocking.gif Bonai... Just calm down... Aggression is not good. Take deep breaths...

GPs are generally afraid of water. What you do is, you put them on your hand, with their legs on either side of your arm. slowly lower them into the water. then very slowly take out your hand. They seem less timid this way. Always make sure at least one of your hands os holding your GP so it ont be frightened. If it's still struggling, then use 1 hand to hold its belly lo.

I more scared they will shake water on me. biggrin.gif Or jump off the bathing bench onto my shirt, making me all wet.

vmad.gif haiz... ya... but i bought 2 from IKANO... just wan to help...
they are so smal...i think just 2weeks... haiz~! so sad...

if u buy them for the purpose to care and help... u lost nothing..
money save animals... thats great.. thumbup.gif
but from now on... if i want... i think i will BREED them...
*
As I frequently mentioned, when buying from the same place, they could be siblings. sibling breeding is inbreeding. Offspring is unhealthy or more prone to diseases.

Think a lil into the future. If you buy to save it, like many people buy to save it, the petshop only will stock more. In fact, it's BETTER if they mistreat it. Cuz people will buy it to save it.

Conclusion is, don't buy it, don't save that few. The shop will not be able to stock or mistreat them anymore.

If they wanna stock, they only must treat the GP well because people don't buy mistreated GP. blush.gif

SWT. You're not scared it has identity crisis?

Gp mama: Baby, you are a guinea pig, even if Sharil calls you Chinchila.

Baby GP: NO!!!!! I am chinchilla!!!

XD

@limie: Cute GPs~ Sibling breeding will make the gene weaker. Their immune system is weaker. More easily sick. Like humans, sibling cannot breed with siblings ma. baby got high percentage will be cacat.

Hahaha... Rumizu became the ultraman that protects the weak and helpless gp's... But can la, rumizu so hensem can la become ultraman... laugh.gif

Yeah, read abt it some time ago. They really do make gp like itik panggang. Cucuk on a long stick and bbq them over fire... But seriously, I can never imagine doing that to my gp's...

Well, both my ladies are warming up to me now. They are more manja rite now. Doesn't run away from me whenever I'm patting their heads now... And getting more vocal to.. and popcorning a lot more to.. laugh.gif laugh.gif Loving them more and more even tho everyday also have to clean their cage. laugh.gif

Ey people, at what age do you start to trim your gp's nails?
*
I read about it too. They say GP is the best white meat... Very low in fat and high in protein.... sweat.gif I told my mum that some countries do eat GP for food. Now whenever the GPs naughty she will threaten to cook them. Of course she's just playing.

There's no age. Just cut when their nails are long. It curls so it will curl into the foot if you don't cut for long periods. It will be uncomfortable for you GP, and it will hurt them too.

First, wrap your GP with a cloth. Wrap them firmly so they have to stay still but don't suffocate them la. Then hold out 1 feet. Do it at a place with light. You should be able to see the pink thing in their nails. DON'T CUT THAT. Cutting that will cause your GP to bleed. That is a blood vessel called quick.

Cut above the quick. Basically the part that is white. If you're scared, just cut the very tips of ther nails and cut them every week or so. I cut mine once every 2 weeks.

You can use a human nail clipper but i suggest u use those for small animals or small dogs or cats. It's easier ad you can judge the distance between each quick and where you're cutting.
