Yes you can.
I have upgraded the RAMs and HDDs before on Dell laptops and its not hard at all.
Just make sure your parts are compatible to the system.

Its normal thing. The brighter the screen the more power it consumes.
If previously it can last longer, means that your battery lifespan is wearing off.

Hi
is this thread still active?
i have a problem!!
i tried installing a 2GB Kingston DDR2 RAM today, replacing the 512MB stick on DIMM A, but during the boot after installing there appears a list of errors, then the system reduces the amount of RAM that is available from 3GB to 1GB. Afterwards, it wouldn't even show the POST screen. Everything goes blank, and the numlock LED stays lit, while CAPS LOCK and SCROLL LOCK LED blinks, about 40+ times then it automatically shuts down. Now my laptop only works with 1 RAM inserted into DIMM B, if i insert any RAM into DIMM A it will not boot at all..
Please help!

Mine would have it's place in gaming taken over by...a Studio 1555...soon. Though I'll still use this for stuff like assignments.

So my inspiron 6400 screen is dead-ish. It boots up and shows the Dell logo and then goes dark. It works just fine otherwise: I'm on it right now hooked up to an external monitor. Any idea if it's fixable?

Hello, fellow forumers & 6400 users. It's been a while since I visited this thread. The last time was probably when it was still V5. tongue.gif

Bought my 6400 in Dec. 2006. Intel C2D T7200 (2GHz, 667MHz FSB, 4MB L2), 1GB (2 x 512MB) RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon X1400, WinXP.

I have some questions.
1) What's the difference between models 6400 & i6400? huh.gif
2) When was the 6400 released? Curious to know who's 6400 lasts the longest & to have an idea how long a 6400 can last.
3) What are the non-physical tell-tale signs that the 6400 is getting old?
4) What's the max. RAM memory that WinXP (32-bit) utilize?
5) Is there a limit to the RAM memory that can be upgraded? Plan to upgrade mine to 4GB for additional performance since I can't upgrade the processor. Hope my 6400 can last til' Win7. notworthy.gif
6) Will there be any performance benefit if I get RAM memory of 800MHz (clk. speed) or more?
7) What's the difference between SO-DIMM & normal DIMM RAMs? Can I insert SO-DIMM RAMs in the 6400?

Thx. happy.gif

Yes!!!
as long as you have no limitation of budget, during weekday. give Dell a call, if parts available, Dell technician can visit you in the same day to repair your computer after your payment confirm.
