QUOTE(tkyong1 @ Jul 4 2011, 12:47 PM)
Hi guys,

I am a middle age man at 42.

Being able to play piano was my childhood dream, unfortunately, i did not have that kind of luxury due to the financial constraint at that period of time.

I am now 42, everything is stable, and i proceed to fulfil my long due childhood dream.

Lately, i started to take "pop piano" lession at Yamaha music.

I believe, if i would like to progress fast, I must have a piano at home for practice.

There are many brands and type of piano in the market, i am not musician, it is kind of difficult to decide which one to get.

I really need advice from the music expert in this forum.

My question:

Q1 : Digital piano or acoustic piano? My teacher prefers digital piano as it is more fun?
Q2 : Which brand to get? Yamaha? Kawai? Casio?
Q3 : Estimated price? i am not familiar so must know some thing before walking into the shop (nanti kena ketuk).
Q4 : Where to buy?

Your advice is very much appreciated.
congra... it's never too late to learn music, that's for sure.

do take ur time in before making a final decision. i would recommend you to check this link http://www.pianobuyer.com/spring11/11.html
diff between acoustic and digital. u would want to spent every dime with maximum returns. it is a very helpful resources...

hv fun...

Hi everyone! smile.gif
I wanted to ask something.
My friends who play the piano told me that they all started to play the piano when they were like 5 years old.
Either that or it was very young. They said that younger have more tender and soft fingers, so will adapt better.
I'm 15 now. And I want to take piano lessons after my PMR.
Not too sure whether should I take them or not after the feedback that I get saying my fingers are not nimble enough...
Hope you guys can help or give some advice! blush.gif

Hello every seniors here,
today I attended piano class again. My teacher did me an overall conclusion of myself.

She kept on saying my 手力 is uneven, I don't know what it's called in English... Maybe she was saying my intonation ? Next is that my both hand are not tally, they are like 2 individuals who tried to race at the same tempo throughout the song, if one made a slip, the other won't wait and just kept on playing. I guess this can be tackled by more practices.

I just don't understand how to cope with the 'intonation', 'interpretation'... I don't understand what are these. And how to do it. She always says 'Control your left hand.' , 'Control your right hand'. I just don't understand. When I asked, she says something about interpretation and intonation...

Any seniors would like to lend me a hand? I'm seriously in need of help! icon_question.gif

Hi all pianist,

First, please forgive me for asking a very basic and silly question.

I have just started my piano lesson lately.

My teacher teachs me : "music scale (symbols); "music note (C,D,E,F,G,A,B etc)"; fingering (1-5).

My question and confusion: -

While trying to play a piece of music, shall i interprete the music scale (symbols) into :
- music note like C,D,E or
- fingering position like 1,2,3
to play the music?

Many thanks in advance.

No, there are octaves, you'll not be able to interpret the rest.

Maybe she meant you should control your left hand strength so that your left hand wont cover the melody?
I am working on my both hand strength too.

Is Hanon Exercise good? I found some reading material back few years back that totally oppose the traditional learning method such as:

Sight reading not needed, instead memories notes by notes and visualise them as sheet when you play.
Hanon and other finger exercise cause more harm than good
Scales will come eventually even if you never practice them before.

I started my piano lesson journey again and have been playing hanon, recently asked to get a metronome which i have a really bad time trying to follow it..

1st Information: Piano care guide

Your piano is a finely crafted musical instrument with thousand of individual parts. These combine to create a blend of acoustic and mechanical properties which require care and regular servicing, called for by all manufacturers.

Top quality woods of many species, as well as cooper, steel, iron, brass, plastics, wool and cotton all go its making. The steel wire used in the strings represent the highest development in this product and only a few mills in the world manufacture it. When tuned, these strings altogether produce a stress on the piano equal to more than 14 tons, enough power to life a two car garage off of it's foundation!

Placement
When choosing a location for your piano, consider the effect that humidity and temperature has on a fine instrument. Prevent exposure to extreme sunlight, direct heat or excessive dampness. Avoid south facing windows, fireplaces and heating vents. Your piano will perform best in a moderately ventilated environment, free of extreme temperature and humidity fluctuations. Chose a location where your piano will sound best. Hardwood floors will add resonance while carpeting will have the effect of dampening the sound. The back of an upright piano should be left at least three inches away from the wall to allow for air and sound circulation.

Controlling the environment
Changing humidity is the chief culprit woes. Relative humidity levels of less than 30% can dry out wood and compromise glue joints. Excessive humidity will rust the metals and slow down the performing mechanism. A humidistat, a device that measures humidity can be purchased at most hardware stores. This will tell you if you should be concerned about your piano's emvironment. If you do have concerns, you can have Piano Tune Canada install a dedicated humidity control device in your piano called a Dampp- Chaser TM. This can literally add years of life to your piano and help preserve the tuning.

Fine furniture
Your piano is a beautiful piece of furniture, and so will need perodic care. Avoid using silicone based polishes or paste waves. If your piano is a highly polished instrument with a polyester finish, a soft, slightly damp cloth is all that is needed to keep it gleaming. For satin finish instruments, merely wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth, and then dry immediately with a dry cloth. Always dry with the grain. If your piano has a lacquer or shellec finish, periodically moisturize with a slightly damp cloth mixed with a small amount lemon oil. Ask your technician if you are unsure about which type of finish your piano has. Piano tune Canada carries a large selection Piano Cleaners and Polishes.

Keys
Keep the keys cleans from duster or soft cloth. The keys can be cleaned with a mild solution of soap and water, however, make sure you wiring the cloth out well and don't let moisture between the keys. Rub gently and dry immediately with a soft dry cloth. Do not use alcohol, furniture polish and/or chemicals when cleaning the keys. Ivory can be delicate, so use care when cleaning.

Regulation
Your piano should be mechanically re-adjusted every 4-6 years. This process is called regulation and involves the entire mechanical action and pedal movements. There are more than twenty adjustments on each note to compensate for wear and tear. A properly adjusted action will have increased power, touch and tone, and give the player a great deal of pleasure. Proper performance depends on how well the adjustments are set.

Professional Service
A qualified professional piano technician should perform tuning and service procedures. Unqualified service personnel can damage the instrument and its' components. Your piano should be tuned a minimum of once a year. (Annual visits are required to keep some warranties in good standing.) With Malaysia's huge humidity swings, many piano owners find it necessary to have their piano tuned twice a year or more.

Before the Tuner comes...
The technician will have to lift the lid, and remove certain case parts in order to service your piano, so please make sure that all personal items have been removed from on top.

I would suggest you to go for some second hand or cheap digital piano if really budgeted.
If do not have money right now maybe you can plan how to get money like part time or savings. I am sure you will be able to get one sooner or later smile.gif

got, but you still need to buy a keyboard midi controller with no sound inside. cheapest is RM500'ish for 61keys non weighted.

unless you're like you want to drive a car, no money to buy a car so play on grand turismo...

silent piano is basically a normal acoustic piano fitted with a system that makes it possible to play the piano at anytime without disturbing anyone, day and/or night. how it works? a sensors installed underneath the keys and pedals. when at silent mode a lever drop to block the hammer from hitting the strings. movement of the keys are detected by sensors and converted into a MIDI signal, allowing the piano to be used as digital piano and listen using headphones, and best of all, without effective the touch and response. (two types of sensors in the market 1) optical sensor or 2) lever sensor). in addition to just silent u get to enjoy further 127 different instrument sound and etc...

there are factory installed (on brand new pianos) or after market system allowing installing in used piano/preowned/new pianos and usually cause you between RM 4000.00-RM 8000.00, subject to module....
