The reason i stopped my ABRSM studies was because it was too formal. I don't like taking exams and forced to practice songs that I do not like. I only like playing songs that i can relate to, like songs from my favorite anime, drama, games, pop songs... since Play By Ear classes seems to be more casual, not sure if it'll be more suitable for me.
Haneda,
Play By Ear is for comtemporary/pop songs. It's no you learn very little, but it's more than enough for you to be able to play most contemporary songs, even up to the level you don't need. It's simply underrated by those who doesn't know about the course and what it do.
Basically Play by Ear teaches you MUSIC. It teach you how to listen to a song, most people would be able to capture the melody easily. You'll also learn how to feel the music and learn how to create chords from there. The music coach duty is to guide you through the process and help you out. This course is even beneficial for a conventional Grade 5 to even Grade 8 students who seems lost or learning blindly, which will take them sometime to fix the puzzles.
You can go for the demo or evaluation and decide for yourself.
Else, you can ask if they will have a preview anytime soon. There, you can understand more on the course.
FYI, with this course, you can still take up Exams if you want. They have recently ties up with London Music School, and you can get a certificate from there. All you need to do is just play 3 contemporary songs they provided, and 1 songs of your choice. No theory, no paper, just play.
Also, FYI, they're featured on the newspaper a few times.
Just for your insights:
Level 1 - 20 classes: You'll learn the basic chords and up to 9 (I think) playing styles, you'll also learn how to create your own styles, arrange a song yourself. You're also allowed to bring 1 song of your own.
Level 2 - 20 classes: More on left hand bassing ideas, very much on left hand and bassing. You'll learn those playing styles like Bossanova, Jazz, etc. You'll also learn how to play as an accompaniment.
Level3 - 40 classes: Previously there is only 20 classes, now they extend to 40. Not really sure on the details of this course as I haven't take it up yet. I was told its much more advance and will teach you about adding notes, and such to a song.
There're also other courses after this, such as, "Popular Keyboard Method", where they teaches you how to use your keyboard features andplay like a band.
Your 10 classes I think should be Level 1 first 10 classes. I took that same course first, but when I took it, it was RM650++ if I'm not wrong. After that you can upgrade to Level 1 with the remaining 10 classes.
Don't just take my word or anybody's word. Go SEE for yourself.
We're just giving you our opinions and advice.
As for me, I'm sharing my experiences as a student there as well.
