I noticed that this car is relatively popular, so i decided to make this little discussion area happen. Alright. The Optra has many many different faces. It can be the Lacetti,Nubira, Viva (!) in other markets. You guys can ask for suggestion, tips and many more from here. The car is designed my Pininfarina, has Lotus tunes suspension. The 1.8 model has several features the 1.6 doesn't have, like fog-lamps
, audio controller on steering column and seat-side pockets.

Nah, timing belt is easy to get if u know the right source.....ori ones cost RM500 with the bearings and etc....

My Optra5 has been running for a year without problem and im quite happy with it. I need a 2nd car with auto gearbox for city driving and it certainly fits the bill

i've seen at Sunway Carnival Penang, one Optra5 on show. look menacing I must say.

dripped in Chevy Racing Colours (super touring colours - light blue and white rms), it is on 17 or 18 inchers. double pipes. body hugging seats. front air intake. the whole nine yards.

price is 74K something.

ps- is it a chevy optra5? i just could not remember well what it looks like...hemmm...

Hi all, not sure if anyone seen the new 2008 Optra Magnum with full body kit? I remembered saw it few weeks ago in a road show and it was awesome! However I couldn't find any pics of the new 2008 Optra Magnum with full body kit.

The car is the 2005 model. First batch, the one with the ugly grille.

Performance, I would not say that this car is performance oriented.

On the one I'm driving, I would need to press the accelerator a tad bit more than a Waja to kick the gear down.

As for FC, well, the Waja has slightly better FC that the Optra..

And depending on your family size, I daresay that the Optra is quite comfortable.

btw, mine is the 1.6, not the 1.8

my optra 1.6 2006 serve me well for this 2years+, FC RM0.18 to 0.19 i like to speeding, still lower than waja mar....campro at least RM0.20 with light foot. it's not a very powerful engine, but handling wise, better than the same range Japanese car (altis/civic/sentra) no joke, i test drive all before i make my decision to chevy. Gear change very smooth, very comfort . and i like to take sharp corner after i change to this car. no regret and aim for captiva soon.

Spare part not a problem, u can get at some specific sp shop, or mychevyclub can find any thing u need, many sifu there.

Erm, the one i'm driving is already 4 years old.

Gearbox so far so good.

Wiring, no prob.

Although engine's vibration kinda high, suspect could be due to engine mounting.

Which owner did u heard from tongue.gif ...Im staying in Ipoh and no problem for 3 years already...Spare part is cheap if u know where to find and have the right guidance

Gearbox does not kong easily...so far most of the gearbox problem is due to the wiring harness, which can be easily solve by servicing it/replace with new one....Symptoms of a wiring harness problem is that the idling is not stable and sudden jerks when changing from neutral to drive....Also, most of those who bought this car during the sales did not replace the ATF fluid...once u service the wiring and change the fluid with recommended ATF, the ZF transmission (1.8 models only) is very reliable.

I agree with ericmaxman on the vibration part. The usual suspects for this are the hydromounts and absorbers....mounts are few hundreds a piece while the absobers can be replaced with OEM Hyunkia at RM2++ per pair. Can get HWL adjustables oso if u want.

These are the usual problems with the Optra. I wouldn't say this is a bad car coz I have owned a Hilux Vigo and MRS prior to this and still have a civic, accord and CRV at home. Compared to the Honda and Toyota brand, resale is of course poor due to Cergazam and Hicom poor handling of the brand. Prices are way2 overprice at their service centres due to charging of service labour hours. Most chevy owners would just take a trip across the border to replace major parts and have a nice holiday in hatyai.

If u want less problems, try sourcing a 1.8 model either Optra 1.8 LT or O5.....I'm driving an O5 and so far happy with the space and build. NVH is much lower than the jap cars but the FC and resale is definitely a turn off. My current FC is about 8km per litre for 50% highway and 50% town driving. On the highway it averages about 10-11km/l, average speed 120-140kmph

Added on January 4, 2010, 5:20 pmNaza has taken over the Chevy dealership today....i would say good news since it would mean CKDed Captiva, Cruze & Zafira.....

Lets hope the price would be as competitive as the KIAs....

Anyone who revs their car hard?

I did above 4500rpm to 6000rpm, getting weird noises from the engine. Not knocking, more like whooshing sound.

The wire harness to service is about RM180 in ipoh. I assume that you are in kl and so I think you can get better prices there. U can choose Shared Auto, Glenmarie/Volcar PJ/Exodus Sunway....This are the ex-service centres which are much2 better than cergazam themselves.

Replacement dunno how much bcoz most of the owners got this changed b4 the warranty expired. Hope this helps

If u mean authorize centres, it would still be the same ones under cergazam. In Ipoh, only Leeborn has the TECHII diagnostics as I know of.

In future, Chin Cars might take over since they are under Naza but nothing is concrete yet.

For myself, I only go to LB when the check engine is on. Drop me a pm if u want to know a reliable korean car service centre in bercham.

Sorry for the late reply. I would recommend the 1.8 over the 1.6 anytime. Sure that higher cc means more power, but look at what you get in return. Twin airbags opposed to the single airbag you get in the 1.6. A better transmission (ZF) in the 1.8 than the 1.6. The list goes on. Or, you can also go for the Optra Magnum sedan. I somehow prefer the looks of the Optra Magnum than the older model. But come to think of it, the pregrillelift is the ugliest one. laugh.gif

Im driving 1.8 hatchback....T18SED Engine 120hp, 170nm torque, 4 speed zf auto gearbox, no autocruise.....

Both hatch and sedan comes with automatic aircond, sedan 1.8 lt comes with wooden trim, while 1.8 hatch has plastic trim and leather steering and shift knob

Both can either come with 15" Normal Rims or 16" Enkei Rims, Bodykit and Leather. Cd player can include eclipse, kenwood or clarion depending on your luck.

Hope this helps when you are buying an optra

Nope, spare parts is not an issue. Same goes for maintenance cost, usually about RM100 - RM200 about the same range as Civic/Altis.

Timing belt u can get for rm350 dayco brand from forumer airline. Comes with bearings and seals.....then u need to change v-belt as well....that one forgot how much....lastly, water pump is optional but recommended at 60k kms.....rm500 is cheap but please ask what items he change....if u bring ur parts in labour would be around rm150-200.

Need some advice here.

I brought my chevrolet optra 1.8 to Cergazam, the service centre in JB.

These are the problems they listed out:
1) timing belt need to change - cost 2.5k
2) wiring - cost 1k+ (cos hold light blinking and car not moving)

Can someone recommend workshop in JB/SG/KL that's reliable and cheap, of cos?
Service centre pricing is freaking me out.

Please help.

Here, hope it helps

1) timing belt need to change - Makesure change fullset belt & bearings/vbelt/water pump...all will cost u around 1.2-1.5k at shared auto glenmarie
2) wiring - cost 1k+ (cos hold light blinking and car not moving)....hold light blinking - SPSS sensor (common problem)....about rm300-400 to replace

Recommended workshops in KL = PJ Volcar/Shared Auto glenmarie

Thanks.

Hold light is not blinking anymore. Just during that moment it blinked, the car cant move, is like "D" but in "N" status. Is that SPSS sensor problem or wiring problem?

btw, the wiring issue
some times i could be due to bad or dirty contact
if that is the case, cleaning and checking the connection could fix the issue
but SC normally has the "if it ain't working, change it" mentality
as for the water pump, if you mileage is very low (like 30k km in 3 years), you might want to change it at the next service
it is all up to you
the pump cost about 400 and the reason ppl recommend changing it with timing belt is to save on the labour as it requires similar amount of work to reach the timing belt

I m new to this thread, just got to know there is an optra thread at this forum, i own an optra 1.8, but going to sell off soon, hehe... happy driving and good luck to all optra over here, cheers. Got a photo of my beloved chevy just for sharing smile.gif

Engine oil : i have been using fully synthetic from day 1 i took my car, because can last for 10K before next service, but semi synthetic also will be good enough, so far i have not heard anyone usingnon synthetic.

my uncle got a 2nd hand optra, but the ori alloy rims r missing.. its using those ugly black steel wheels (u know, the ones that usually comes wit the spare wheel).. so he wanted 2 change it, if possible wit the original optra rims.. anybody here wants 2 sell theirs, or know of any source thats available??

btw, wats the pcd for optra anyway?? if its hard 2 fins the ori ones, i might try 2 persuade my uncle 2 change 2 some aftermarket sport rims..

so far i dont see any discussion on the items below... perhaps its time we start sharing stuff about the car services and maintenance.

1. Where to source for original GMDAT parts?

2. Where to service and do maintenance (without being chopped)?

3. Possible mod's (interior and exterior)

You can just contact Bro Ahtap for parts. He is one of the most reliable chevy members. He is incharge in sourcing the GM ORIGINAL parts for chevy members from Thailand, Korea or Spore. He will even suggest cheaper alternative depending on yur budget. Parts purchase thru him is much cheaper because he is using chevy's/GM's contact from abroad.

So far.. none of the members ever complaint about his generous help. You can just call him should you require any consultation also. He is happy to help provided he is not occupied at that time.

Thanks for sharing bro. But based on yur quotation on Tenaga Jaya, i can guarantee that the timing belt set are not genuine. the cost is too cheap esp on the oil seal. I change oil seal 3 times and bought from Thailand. The price is already nearly RM300 for 3 pcs. The cheapo one is only RM30 per pc. My mileage is already nearly 240k and expecting 4th major service soon.

You need an expert that can differenciate the parts. We as normal owner not so familiar. Bro Ahtap is one of the guy that expert on this. Just becareful bro. Dont end up buying immitation parts.

Hi jackjackjack, is it a 1.6 or 1.8? if it's a 1.8, RM49k sounds like a steal (car only 2 years old). Major problems are usually electrical, so make sure you find a good workshop with the tech 2 device. Also the ATF for this car is EXTREMELY expensive (unless you're getting the 1.6), so try and find a manual transmission if you can.

Otherwise keep to the maintenance schedule and it's a good car.

Hi, thanks for the advice. It's 1.6, does it worth RM49K? BTW, what is ATF?

Hi all the Optra fans here!

Gong Xi Fa Chai!!

Needs advice/opinion and guides on Chevrolet Optra.

Im totally new to this car so helps are much much appreciated here. Im planning to get my dad a car, either Hyundai Elantra or Chevrolet Optra since my budget is around 25k-35k.

Was searching around and gotta know theres few variants are available in market. Abit confusing with LS. LT and Magnum version?? Can someone explains on this? Thanks!!

Besides, which one is better between 1.6 and 1.8? Was told 1.6 parts are easier to find due to 1.8cc parts are more complicated, hence higher maintainance costs in 1.8??

Also, some experiences about maintainance costs are much appreciated too.

Thanks in advance and appreciates the times u spent to reply me here.

Take care

hi peeps... I have a question. I feel that my Chevy Optra fuel gauge is having a problem, it's not accurate at all. May I know what's the problem? Have you guys experienced that before.

Plus, my Chevy was running out of water the other day. The temperature went up and air con turned hot. After I refilled it with water, it works fine now. Just the fuel gauge, which is not accurate, sometime goes up and goes down within the range of 1/4 tank-ish.

i need a thorough diagnostic scan because it's not just the meter problem. Sometime it gets overheat real quick.
Let me abridge what was going on.

On a Friday evening, I was rushing to send someone to catch a plane. I drove real quick along the highway. This may expedite the water consumption.
The next day, Saturday morning, it was overheated due to no water. Luckily I managed to fill it up with water from the neighborhood and it worked out fine.
I went to a car workshop rightaway just to solve the problem. The technician told me it's all right after looking at the underneath of my car. He said no water leakage. Perhaps, I may modify to eliminate the HOT-AIR system in my car as I am not going to use it forever. I thought everything is perfect then.

Sunday outing was great and car worked perfectly.

Monday, when I was driving to work. My car temperature shot up again. I quickly went to my friend's house nearby and asked him to drop me off. Luckily he was still at home.
After work, I checked my car, the water tank is not totally empty. It has like 50% of water inside. Just the metal thing shows up above the water level and make it boiling I guess.

Tuesday, Wednesday... I tested it. The car fuel gauge aka fuel meter is so fluctuate.

Today, I didn't drive the car at all.

Any car workshop recommended? Any problem with my car? I always spare some water in my car now, just to prevent it from getting overheated again.

Hi all, I just bought a 2nd Optra 1.8 LT in KL. Bought it for RM27K, the car is made in 2004. Last few days found out the problem of gearbox, when turning R from N, it get stuck. Although stepping the brake, it cannot be work. Then send to SC, then realized is the brake switch problem, after changed, it back to normal.

But now, i have other problem with the handbrake light on the meter, it won't be on while I had pull my handbrake.

Then where can I the car condition, because I had no idea whether the car had changed the timing belt or not. Even the car seller also had no idea on it. So, where can I check? Now the mileage is around 96k.

Please advice..

Added on March 29, 2011, 10:08 amNow, all my other problems had been solved by PJ Volcar, only small problem with the gearbox. Suspected the gearbox oil, filter haven't been changed. It will keep on auto change low and high gear on a highspeed. Trying to change the gearbox oil, c whether it will be better or not.

Serious problem here... Optra 06/07, when attempt to engage R - D, then the whole car jerk with large noise.. then HOLD light keep blinking...

Where is the work shop should we go in order to repair this problem?

Gone to Thailand SC and PJ Cergazam, both unable to solve the problem and no parts (P&N Switch).

How much it cost to fix the problem?

The hold light and check engine light mean that the vehicle computer has sensed a problem with the transmission. This can be related to a sensor, slippage, or one of the electronic control devices that operate the transmission. You will need to scan the system and then perform the listed diagnosis for whichever code or codes have been set. You can have the system scanned at many auto parts stores. The code should stay in the computer for at least 50 starts even if it only sets intermittently.

Change Valve Cover Gasket - RM 35.00

After these service, I still got problem with my engine mounting and air-con, but the engine mounting PJ Volcar told me will charge me around RM 750.00 for 3 pcs.

But now, I still 1 major problem regarding my car start, when put in the car key into the hole and turn to start, it always don't start, when turning on, it got a sound like 'click click'. After some times, then it start. Sometime, i check with the cable with battery, it can easily start but sometime it won't. I don't suspect with the battery because everytime i on my car, the radio will automatic on...so suppose the battery will not had any problem, any one here got idea with it? hmm.gif
*
if the ABS and traction control light stays on for a while after the engine is started, then you should consider dropping in another battery to try
those 2 lights staying on is the early indicator of battery wear, although you might still be able to run it for >3 months from the first time it start showing up

Hi guys, i feel a bit jerking/ not smooth when my chevy optra reach 60-80 km/h. The jerking not very obvious but still can feel it especially going u a slope/hill. Will the fuel that i use caused the problem or this is the sign of gear box problem?

guys .. just wonder if any optrarian here face the same problem i had here..

well its due to the engine sound when idling (more significant when cold started)..

it sounded like a belt kept spinning (imagine the sound of a old taxi)..

any idea might be the culprit before i go look for cergazam or chevy 3s centers ?

Its on and off and It usually jerks before dies off. The engine sounds much smoother as I off the air-cond. Probably some worn bearing that gives too much load to it.

Nothing much of the abs you can do. Can change to HWL which cost you more than RM2k but i tested and dont like it. The GM original is still the best.

Check yur throttle body. maybe its dirty.

Then check the hole on the bonet. maybe got dirt stuck inside. But when you push the water dispenser, got any sound of pump working? If not.. maybe pump already kong.

If you ask me.. for 7 years old car.. Things that must change already during tht time..

1. Timing belt (every 60k or 3 years whichever earlier)
2. Other things related timing belt at same timing i.e. vbelt, filters (oil, fuel & aircond), water pump & spark plug.
3. Coolant flushing
4. Coolant hose. Upper & lower hose at 3 years and the rest at 5 years or before if required.
4. Absorber + abs mounting
5. Engine mounting. (i know 2 cars experience mounting crack and one case gearbox fell down)
6. ATF change every 30k without fail (You dont wanna mess with this or end up RM8 - RM10k)
7. Break bleeding every 60k or 3 years.
8. Power steering flushing every 3 years or 5 years if lazy. ONLY USE GM DAEWOOO ORIGINAL.
9. Driveshaft in order to have peace of mind.
10. Break pump (when spoiled)
11. Fuel pump (when spoiled)

Almost everything i got it from Sifu Ahtap. He even send it over to me during breakdown (once at my house for fuel pump & once at foremen place for brake pump). Really good service & efficient with minimal delivery cost. Never let me down so far and all parts are genuine unless can use OEM based on his judgement & recommendation in order to cut cost. Thank god i met him early!

Fuel sender probs. The so called "pelampung" inside fuel pump dah kaput. Need to change that. estimated cost +-RM100. Better go to SC so ada warranty parts & labor. Lot of cases.. kena tuko few times baru ok. Mine change for 3 times then baru dapat yg ok. But all cover warranty..

So quite nowadays...

Just got info that few Optra members got problem with gerabox & one engine totally lost.

the gerabox issue arrived because owner did not use recommended ATF. In short term no issue but long run the sensor inside gearbox will be damaged resulted gearbox burn.

The engine damaged was in Sabah. The owner wanna safe cost and use OEM/substitute parts recommended by the foremen. To save few hundreds during his top overhaul process.. the engine totally kaput due to broken piston bearing.

Now bro Ahtap is arranging to send a half cut engine (top head and block) to Sabah.

So.. becarefull guys..

If you lucky you get a good condition one. Be very careful when buying second hand units.

Hi to all Big bro here, I'm more towards a rider type but unfortunately I still need a car. My present car is old & pretty worn out, so it isn't suitable for distance driving or to fetch certain people. However, I'm pretty much ride to work to avoid jam & more sleeping time. My car is pretty much used as weekend car, holiday, and shopping purposes. FC may be a major concern for me as well but if I may, how much will it be when translate into per KM? My present car is consuming at about 25 cent per KM.

I'm thinking of upgrading a little and Chevy Optra caught my attention particularly the older models around 2005. After doing some reading, understanding why the 2nd hand value is rather... sad? & certainly doesn't sound like a car for Automobile noobs like me. I understand the risk but at least it is within my poor-man budget.

I stayed in Penang Island & many often stuck in the traffic jam. Will this car suits me?

in penang island too
and i'm getting around 25c per km too
a relative swap a fuel injected wira 1.5 for a 1.8 optra and found that the optra is giving slightly better FC on the similar work commute

sad resale value should be good news for those looking for a used unit right?

Hola~ Fellow Penangites! ^^
Ahh... 25c is good. I'm a gentle driver but rather abusive in small K-cars, a 1.6 Optra will do justice to other user and my conscience tongue.gif (& wallet too~) well... indeed, I'm gonna go around looking. Any suggestion for a trustworthy 2nd hand dealer in Penang Island? How much would a 1.6 around yr 2005 would cost, maybe an est?

Saw a lot at Greenlane area but some of my friends says they aren't trustworthy. What is your opinion? hmm.gif

Dear all chevy club user, i have just bought a chervolet optra 1.6 (2005 model) from a shop in penang island. After i bought the car i notice that the car petrol consumption is crazily high. RM80 only allows me to go for 220km++. It cost me RM0.35/little of RON 95 petrol. This is really crazy, i have change the plug, battery, black oil (fully syntetic, RM260) and also auto oil RM260 (pakelo 1) but this problem still cannot be fixed. The forman told me that there is no leaking of petrol at all. In total i have spent more then RM1500++ to repair this car... Try service your throttle body. Do you notive yur RPM is wuite high i.e. more than 1k during idling or fluctuated inconsistantly?

Just do that first and then check the timing using Tech 2.

the FC shouldn't be that high
did you check the air filter?
did you refuel when the warning lights turn on? how much fuel can you put in from there? reason for asking this is some units have erratic fuel meters

What is your opinion? hmm.gif

best if you can get it from direct owner. there are some who probably looking to upgrade.
perhaps bro ajay might know of some from the optra owner club
as for price, i'm not sure, but should be in the 20-30k range

My RPM is usually below 1k during idling, it fluctuates sometimes but wont go up more than 1k... i have brought it to the Chevrolet center in Bukit mertajam and they check the tech 2 scanner for me. No problem been identified. They advise me to bring it to the mechanic shop to clean the valves. Already did that, waiting for improvement on the car....

Yup it shouldn't be that high, really terrible... The air filter is ok after checking.. I tried to pour full tank petrol and it only drives me for 240km... after that the light will be on and i refill another RM80++ petrol to reach full tank... really sad about this..

one thing to note that the optra is a rather heavy car
therefore, try to be easy on the throttle in town use

I planning to get Optra Magnum 1.8LT SS around 45k, can i know the fuel consumption before i make the decision to jump to this car ? And is there any cheap place to service Optra rather then go to service center since it has alot of electronic stuff.

Hi

This is my first post at this forum.. smile.gif

I got a Holden Viva in australia which is the same as the optra base model, cause Holden in Aus decided to scrap any extra features for this car except for alloys & ABS to make it a cheap car.

With my Viva I want to put fog lights on it. I've bought the OEM fitting fog lamps but i was wondering if anybody know if the Chevy Optra or Daewoo Lacetti models without fog light, know if the factory defualt wiring still exist in the base model. I've had a look at my car and in the engine fuse box, there's still a spot for the front fog light relay and fuse to go but with no fuse or relay in it, also I had a look to see if there is a a cable with a plug to plug the fog light in but I cant seem to see one.

So what Im asking is:
Does the factory wiring for the fog lights still exist in the base models with out the fog lights.
And if so where can you find the cable with the plug to plug them in.

Don't know its a bit to late to reply, but you could try and replacing the fuel filter!
Mum and Dad had a similar problem with thier car chewing through fuel and someone suggested changing the fuel filter and they haven't had a problem since.

I just get my Optra 1.8 yesterday, drive from KL to JB, 350KM journey, 90% highway & 10% City; FC was RM62, ard 0.17-0.18/KM.

Will bring the car to service first, as quite a lot of things need to change/repair, tayar, engine oil brake oil, gear oil, and do allighment and balancing...

Hopefully the FC can improve....

Hi all Chevy sifu, I'm looking for either Optra 1.8 2007 or 2008 as my budget is below 35k..do you all mind sharing any major concerns and tip-eyes while checking the car? Secondly, is it any major complaint about yr 2007 Optra? I got an offer of Optra 2007, RM29k, mil 110k..wondering someone can help me to justify whether my decision to get this worth or not. hmm.gif

But, if anyone here intended to let go Optra 1.8 (at least 2006 above), pls PM me..thank you much..

i tink it is a great offer for the price if it is an 1.8 optra. things u hav to check is the engine itself, listen to the sound does it sound running down, v-house (check of any major accidents), open up the trucks where the place to keep spare tire for a check of any major accident.. etc etc. hope it helps smile.gif

The quality is good as ori la bro. I used before and this is second set after 4 years. Other Chevy club members also using it without compalint. GM ori much more expensive. You can ask him to get it if you want to.

I'm selling optra 1.8 LT 2004 gold colour. But traded in already. Waiting for new car to arrive then I have to surrender this car. xD

FC errm, not bad, if no JAM RM75 petrol ron95 can go about 400km. Car solidness and NVH is definately good compare to some new cars. High speed cruising is enjoyable. However parts a bit expensive to get original, else 2nd grade parts will work as well. Just that it won't last as long as new part.

So quite here... seems like everybody does not have any issue on their ride.

I just change my absorber for the 3rd time. Together with the abs mounting. Mileage clocking 300k and i am happy with it. The ride is gud as new..

Thanks to bro Ahtap for his superb service.

Hi guys. Just want to get your opinion from master here. I just started working, and looking to find a 2nd hand car, which is reliable, not too fuzzy, average FC and obviously low price. So, chevy optra is one of my option. I just went through the thread here, just want to know if anybody know where can I get reliable maintenance and spare part in Perak? I live in Lumut. And how do you feel driving this car? Is it satisfactory? Thanks.

Depending on how you look at it, the Optra's maintenance is pretty high if compared to the other cars in its range. Also, parts availability is going to be a pain. I would advise against getting a used Optra especially if you dont know the history behind the car. FC is just about average, but that was with a 1.6, not sure how would the 1.8 be.

Yurs is 1.8 or 1.6?

Only Optra 1.8 is having issues with the P&N switch. Very rare to happen to Optra 1.6.

Hi guys, Im wondering if it is worth to get a second hand Optra..

Currently im driving saga fl year 2011.. Honestly I dont really like this car especially national car.. the feeling of love is just not there.. I know its the most practical car to drive but i juz need to love my ride right?

Ive seen some car below 20-30k, and I think Chevy optra is kinda attractive.. they're probably 2005 car.. almost 10 years ald. Im that kind of person who uses second hand stuffs throughout my life so its fine for me. Read some reviews saying that it suffers from bad FC and hard to get spareparts..

I visisted Fuelly website where ppl report their fuel mileage, average for optra is around 10 km/l .. whereas my saga is 11.4 which i think is bad.. If i were to change to optra im not sure if its considered an upgrade or downgrade LoL.. for practical purpose of coz saga is better la. But im a kind who love cars smile.gif

What do you guys think. any optra users can share opinions?

definitely an upgrade, saga until today even the latest model is a 3 star NCAP rating while optra was a.k.a holden viva in Australia receiving at least a 4 star NCAP for the hatchback variant I think.

so it's kerb is definitely safer compared than saga...

on FC side with better kerb safety means slightly higher weight and therefore higher FC for optra.
for city driving u can get around 8km/L while highway can get u 12-13km/L
so your average of 10km/L is about right.

besides that optra comes with ABS, EBD, 1.8 optra magnum has TCS as well.
go test drive one and feel the difference!

for parts, you can source it online
there's one guy in this thread that sells it too and my dealing with him is ok
as for mechanic, most decent mechanics will be able to service and maintain the optra, although there are a few workshops that's well versed with the optra in klang valley but i don't track them as i'm not from that area

Try this:

http://www.vanli.com.my/vanli/

Remember to say you are looking for Chevrolet parts. Some more, try to avoid "hyunkia" spare parts if possible!

Cheers!

are you sure it's the compressor that failed?
a common misdiagnosis (whether intentional or not) is compressor failure when actually, it's the RCV (refrigerant control valve) that broke
the 1.8 uses a variable volume compressor, which will cost a bit more. can't remember the exact amount but i think 1k is the ballpark figure
just make sure you get the right compressor, some shops will give you the standard type

You can go to Bangi Chevrolet SC. It is nearby the UKM kTM station.

Oh, that is another previously was Chevrolet SC, which is located in front of Warta Shopping building before you go over the bridge if you are coming from the toll. It is a tyre shop, and I believe it did put the Chevrolet signboard.

Cheers!

If you mean the labour charge to replace the belts (timing belt, aircond belt..etc), I believe is around rm 1xx. But I think Bangi SC is cheaper.
You can try to call them up.

If you mean the labour charge to replace the belts (timing belt, aircond belt..etc), I believe is around rm 1xx.  But I think Bangi SC is cheaper.
You can try to call them up.

Normal workshop or SC?

Eversince I stop sending my optra to SC
I went to this guy, Ah Heng, Jalan Utama 1/1, near Puchong Perdana 3°00'14.1"N 101°36'38.7"E
Basically, he'll do your car based on your budget
And mine still running ok (250k km now)

just note that the higher price you pay, the parts will last longer
mine's always on the cheap, that's why i've been close to him, i guess laugh.gif

Chevy is a continental car, parts are not easy to find..nonetheless, its a great ride, been using 1.8LT (2004 model) since 2 years without much problem.

Hey everyone, may I know if there is a recommended workshop around damansara area, anyone? Thx

My 2 cents…

Have been using an Optra 1.6 for many years. It is a good car if properly take good care of it . Use good engine oil and ATF oil. Below is some info from my years of using Optra.

Mechanic: As the user "electron" said most decent mechanics will be able to service and maintain the Optra.

Air-cond compressor: stopped working after 5-6 years (~100K km).

Water hose: All need to change after 5-7 years (~120K km). Must use coolant.

Plastic radiator casing: Crack after 4-5 years.

Drive Shalf: Change ~ 5 years (depend on how many holds I hit).

FC: 8-9km/liter (heavy solid car)

Major service: Timing belt, Water pump, Fan belt, etcs.
(~100K km) Price ~RM1000-1300. If buy own parts, it will be cheaper.
