Here's something to share,
recently surveying for a HD player, but now after all the HD-DVD format obsolete, blueray has finally win the battle and make me considering buying a new BD player.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUjRn_MAW8c

after watching this youtube, i'm considering buying PS3 for blueray purpose,
is the only player that can firmware upgradable to blueray profile 2.0 or future profile.

if you spend RM3999 for Sony Blueray Player, why don't you buy a RM1xxx PS3 with 40G 60G hardisk inside.

just my 2 cent. peace! cool.gif

Has this been discussed b4? i have search all the forum for this but haven't got 1, just found a good youtube just want to share with you guys.
btw, for a HD idiot like me, will the BD Player like PS3 downscale 1080p/1080i to my small 32" LCD TV for 720P? i'm not as rich as the youtube guy which has the 50" LG LCD TV

PS3 is not officially confirmed as a Profile 2.0 player yet, you won't know about it until the next firmware update but honestly, the PS3 can't even stack up again some standalone blu-ray players as the standalone players have dedicated DACs for video and audio whereas the PS3 is a software player, the standalone players are more pricier for a reason.

But as of software updated, the firmware can be homebrewed!
so features can be enriched by doing so...

but for a budget blueray player, i think PS3 is the most valuable player at the moment
you can't get an official PS3 @ malaysia, but there are already been here for parallel importers, waranty is only the matters.

How to downscale? automatically by HDMI detect the LCD TV?
now only watching HD via PC output on 720P, keen to try a blueray disc anyway drool.gif drool.gif

yes, and one of them is me! haha smile.gif

i wouldn't say PS3 is the best valued BD player out there because of its entirely depends on your situation:

a) "I-just-wanted-my-movies-to-look-damn-nice-on-my-new-hdtv kinda guy"
then PS3 will become the best value yet. Price of RM1300-1400 is the cheapest blu-ray player available in M'sia. This valid because this person may not consider HD audios (DTS HD MA & DD TrueHD) to be decoded or make important.

b) "Im-a-audioholics-with-a-lot-of-green kinda guy"
then PS3 might not be the best player yet. Because you wants all the HD audios to be decodes by your receiver. To do this u need a bitstreaming capable player. There is a rumor news that PS3 able to bitstream these HD audios, but not confirmed yet.

c) "Im-a-audioholics-with-short-of-green kinda guy"
then PS3 will may be or not become best player. It entirely depends on your hardware. you may need receiver that has the capability of accepting & processing PCM sources from the BD player. In this case, BD player must have the capability of decoding HD audios internally and output it as PCM; PS3 is the best bet and best value and also easily available in our beloved country. But mind you, PS3 only capable of outputting DD TrueHD as PCM; DTS HD MA only gods and sony knows when.

sorry for the lame reply. I use this formula to get started in HD worlds smile.gif

*slowly raising hand up* I am buying the PS3 solely for BD playback. blush.gif The possibility of playing games is low as I am losing interest in it. My PS2 has been left untouched for almost a year.

I could not afford to buy a standalone BD player, which is obscenely expensive for peasant like me doh.gif Unless the price nosedive to what HD-DVD player is being sold at the moment (fat hopes for now)

This explains why XBOX 360 is selling more games than PS3. laugh.gif
