I'm looking for a receiver for my ps3 and pc. My initial plan is to get the 663. As it supports true hd.
However, I got opinions from other not to take the 663, as there are new model available.
My budget is RM1k +.

If someone selling used unit, please let me know

Onkyo 806 downgrade compare to Onkyo 805 hence also punchy.Yammy rx-v1900 quite good as well as Denon 2809,3 of them have own performance by themself and i suggest that u should go for audition 3 brands as u r mentioned.budget wise depends how much that u willing to spend.

Actually I went to A&L IOI today to test yammy 1900 but got no stock there. The manager ask me to go to Amcorp but today closed. He also recommend NAD 747 which is ard 4K+ and will be coming next month. The manager there Rick is quite nice though.Any other place that I can test 2809?

I was loan a Onkyo TX-SR705 amp to compare with (my RX-V663)

Here is the result

Onkyo TX-SR705 (against the RX-V663)

Pro
3 HDMI port in
Cool blue lights for the volume dial
Tells u what sound format is on (eg DTS, DTS Master, etc) Audio, using the light panel (big lettering)
Audyssey auto set up allows for up to 8 placement (eg to optimise listening position for 8 seatings)
The mid channel shines

Con
Very confusing speaker port (Multi colored?????)
Very weak LFE (even after increasing the volume of the subwoofer)
Doesn't tell you how many channels is the source material (eg 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1)
Surround sound NOT as dynamic as the Yamaha (eg not as Beling Balang as the Yamaha)

result, keeping my Yamaha RX-V663

Looks like if I upgrade my amp, high possibility would be a Yamaha

My two sens worth

Sorry, my dyslexia is playing up again. I tried the Onkyo TX-SR705, NOT the Onkyo TX-SR706.

My apologies.

I assure you I wanted so much for the Onkyo to blow me away, because I feel the the 85 watts the yammy 663 has is a little under power to drive my Monitor Audio Silver 7. And I have to add, the Onkyo 100 watts was VERY underwhelming... I did a side but side comparison (eg all my speaker are banana plug, so I unplugged from one amp and plugged into the other)

The material I tested with are

Blu-Ray
Taken (the end gunshot scenes literally shook my room when connected to the yammy 663, but not so on the Onkyo)
Dark City, played this movie half way, switched to the Onkyo (did sound calibration, via Audysses mic) and surround sound went flat......
David Foster and Friends and Chris Botti in Boston, faired a little better, because the Onkyo drive the middle channels beautifully
Stomp Live again bass suffers

I know that Onkyo is usually seen as a strong contender in LFE, but my experience with it proves other with (am using a Paradigm subwoofer)

If you can suggest what else I can do to give the Onkyo a fair trial, I'm all ears (Onkyo amp is still with me, am sure the seller won't mind me giving it another trial)

Please advice

Have u adjust the bass & treble for all the spk? Have u set ur spk to full range? This will enable 'double bass' function. Have u adjust all the LFE level to 00db for all signal type? U can find all this setting in the set-up manual. Oh you have to adjust all this setting manually even after doing the audssey set-up. Hope u will find the Onkyo more 'raw & powerful' after this setting. biggrin.gif

BTW what paradigm u r using?

Onkyo and yammy share the similarities....
both roll off at higher frequencies (blurred), but yammy rolled off higher

strength of yammy is in the mid to mid-bass region, the firing of guns carry weight..."very meaty" sorry lar.. all layman terms biggrin.gif

so as to speak.... every thing changes for the better,

new range of yammy's is very good in bass, mid, midbass, airy-highs ( now you can hear tingy-clinky things, without sibilance)

I did NOT adjust Bass and Treble Audyssey. But the process had set my two front speakers as Full Range. Just that after all the biling balang on the Yammy and then suddenly lack off, really turned me off from the Onkyo....

I luv my yammy... I should NEVER have even consider changing it (unless it is ANOTHER higher end yammy!! tongue.gif)
