Indeed, I'm playing this game now. It is truely enjoyable, everything takes a nice pace which isn't too slow. It forces you to think about things from an epic scale and perspectives never before seen in other games.
For example, I was playing a game against the computer and manage to gain the upper hand by always having the bounty on his head higher and thus leaving the pirates to do the dirty work. But eventually the pirates grew rich and powerful, funded by my empire. When they blocked an important route for me I had no choice but to attack them, obliterating my fleet. My opponents took this advantage to attack my outer planets ring planets and my downfall soon followed. Yes I lost, but this is something I never experienced before!
I got the game from a torrent download. Of course it is illegal, but I couldn't stand waiting and plan to get it if and when it is released at the local store. Please support Stardock! Small developers can make good games!
I just won a game on small random 2 player. Of course the difficulty is easy. I play as the advent vs TEC. I thought I would miss the high diplomacy from games likes Galactic Civ 2 & maybe MOO, but actually I am kinda thankful the game is very focus on space combat instead. I don't feel like the pace is slowed at all, since theres always things you need to worry about like building up your choke points, reseach & most notably the black market. And the scale of even such a small map, took me same amount of time if played medium Gal Civ 2. Its stagerring to think what the scale and effort & the loss of productivity if I were to played on larger than one star system.. Arrhh thinking about it also already making me tired!!For example, I was playing a game against the computer and manage to gain the upper hand by always having the bounty on his head higher and thus leaving the pirates to do the dirty work. The space combat is awesome. I play mostly zoomed out and not minding having to deal with icons, but when a grand scale war break out I would zoom in & enjoy death and destruction in space.
I kinda wish when the pirate meter expires the pirate immediately goes to his bounty and not have grace period for bounty price bid to change. Often I find myself over bidding just so that I can get out of the pirate screen, or baby sit the bid so that I immediately out bid the other guy. Though the way it is set up now makes for some intense multiplayer bidding war.
Acording to the manual we can manipulate the commodity (metal & crystal) in black market, any of you guys manage to pull that of? I just us that portion of the black market to trade in my axcess metal for money. That could be a new strategy to try: drive a particular comodity up artificially so that you could the deny easy exchange rate for the enemy and he'll have to rely on his extractors.
idknight, I agree pirates are the real evil entity in this game & if you can afford it; you should get rid of them mid game. As for software piracy, thought you admit to eventually getting the legal copy of this game I must advice that you don't look for illegal copies of any kind even to trying out game because for everyone that does that theres going to be 10 others that will use the illegal copies indefinitely. In the end the piracy continues because it is us that created the demand for pirate softwares. Glad you like the game.
