yes, in learning ANy instrument at all...a good teacher is essential. Be careful...there are TONS and TONS of beruk violin teachers who cant even play violin properly yet still dare to teach students.

Ooo.. Really r? I think it's better if I trust my PBE instead of any pseudo-violin-expert.. Since I'm capable to play Apocalyptica, Metallica songs by violin then I think I don't need teacher lol.. all i do is just listen to the music n follow with my instinct.. So far, I've done it successfully... icon_rolleyes.gif

What d'you think?

There is loads of good violin teachers who can teach very well and very good but they cannot perform well because they are focusing on teaching only.

Hello there. Want to play in an orchestra with metal music? Think again, it is rare. If you choose to play music as your hobby, then it will not be a problem.

welcome back, Cello. it's been a while since your last post. wink.gif

essentially, even a teacher can't play or become rusty but they were once pass through that level before they teach. they know how to overcome certain problem during the learning progress so they can teach well. a teacher is to pass his/her knowledge down the next generation, so if the teacher didn't go through all the journey how to expect him/her to teach well?

i applause if there's any teacher who just learned until grade 5 but able to teach until grade 8 (let alone beyond that level), and teach them *well*. but i highly doubt so.

like empire, i've seen many, many so called teachers cannot even pass grade 5 and expect to teach. on top of that, many teachers think beginners are the easiest to teach, so grade 5 is enough. in fact, beginners are learning foundations, it'll seriously affect the future learning journey if the foundations are not firm. most importantly, even those teacher doesn't even acquire a firm foundation, imagine how's the outcome of their students.

i've seen too many sad examples. sigh... ohmy.gif

if you folks wanna know which violin teachers are good, it is essential to ask around. I have seen and met many violin 'teachers' who play out of tune and have poor bowing...yet they can tipu the beginners and charge so much.

Even for grade 8 violin...it's no big deal to take 1 whole year to learn 3 exam pieces. hey...you have 1 WHOLE year...3 pieces only!! how hard can it be?? DUH.........

Many people have grade 8 or even diploma yet when it comes to playing other styles of music, they become 'Duh...how to play ha?? err...how to improvise ha? duh....sorry ha. I only know how to play 3 exam pieces wor which takes me 1 whole year to practise so that I can pass. I dont know how to play anything else besides the 3 exam pieces. Hey...wanna hear me play my 3 exam pieces?? I;m quite good wor. Only took me 1 whole year to learn these 3 pieces. My wolrd class violin teacher ha...he/she also dont know how to play anything else besides exam pieces. When I ask hin/her to teach me other styles...he/she said "I tatau wor. How to teach you? Aiya...you just play exam pieces and pass la. Enough d. after you pass then you got a cert to show people ma. What for learn violin if you dont have a cert to show that you took 1 whle year to learn 3 exam pieces and pass??""

tsk! Tsk! Such is the reality of the silly music teachers we have in Malaysia. Remember this: You should learn violin (or any instrument) to ENJOY playing it. NOT to play exam pieces only.

I enjoy playing Violin though I'm nowhere like little ice's standard...but I ENJOY playing it...and need not go through the ancient exam pieces thingy.

Added on February 18, 2009, 12:46 pmFor those who learn violin, piano or whatever instrument so that they can become music teachers....I think that is soooooo ancient thinking.

Do you learn ballet so that you can become an ballet teacher? Do you learn cooking so you can be a cooking teacher? Do you learn gardening so you can become a gardening teacher?? Do you learn singing so you can be a vocal teacher?

NO! You learn something because you enjoy it. That's the most important point! The goal to keep your enthusiasm is to ENJOY it. To learn something with the goal to be a teacher....sigh...you totally mised it!

I know a guy who practically enjoys doing what he does. He is a multi instumentalist..and he's an expert on 2 instruments and is more than qualified to teach on both (he doesnt teach, by the way)....he is learning 6 other instruments now....which he thoroughly enjoys.

He said none of his music teacher friends enjoy playing their musical instrument like him. That's the prob: These music teachers dont realise that you should derive pleasure from playing the instruments.

Added on February 18, 2009, 12:51 pmHe teaches his kids to play rock and roll, boogie woogie, jazz, pop etc on the piano. Yes...he also taught them classical..and his kids do play classical piano pieces well too!

His 9 year old son especially loves playing the piano and plays it almost daily without anyone telling him. You should hear the son play rock and roll. It's sooooo nice!!

His daughter too enjoys playing the violin. The key point is you should ENJOY playing! If you ENJOy teaching...then good for you.

I ENJOY performing, so I perform a lot. Cos I ENJOY IT!

Added on February 18, 2009, 12:58 pmSUre...you can say not all are good enough to be perfomers. That's why they ended up being music teachers. That's not what I am getting at.

Again...do you what you ENJOY doing. If you dont enjoy it, it will a nightmare in the long run....like so many music teachers I met who have no more enthusiasm in teaching...cos they DONT enjoy teaching.

In order for you to learn violin effectively, 1st of all change your thinking. Say to yourself.."I should enjoy playing violin. That's why I am learning it. I should derive pleasure from playing it"

And when you DO enjoy playing it, people can see and hear it.

Lol I feel like having extra lessons from little ice..

I started taking violin lessons because I like the sound it can make while playing the violin. Lol I wont want to become a music teacher.. I cant teach well basically, no patience.. hehe maybe more to becoming a part time performer ( when i can play as well as little ice XD ) .. Hmm or maybe a street performer just to let myself and other enjoy the music!! rclxm9.gif

Though its still a dream yet to be fulfilled.
