I believe for the editing, its not just about the aesthetic or pace, but as to how well the movie holds together. There's is nothing wrong with Ultimatum's editing, its just nothing special to deserve an Oscar, good as it was. Its often given to something which tackles a bigger challenge, like say, Black Hawk Down (where the great editing makes it possible to follow what is going on despite the constant onscreen action involving many groups of soldiers who all look mighty similar with their gear and covered in dust)
A noob question, was it the editing means putting all the film footages together in a movie?
If it is what I understand then their works are dependent on what the director gave them sometimes. Imagine they were given pieces that not continues then how the hell they gonna do their job well. Or a conversation of someone speaking happily then the next continue film becomes talking sadly. If so, then why not the director make the editing to be more efficient?
Does editor pick which part to be use and which part should be omitted or they must put in whatever craps director gives them and do their best? Do they pick which camera angle to be use because I think there must be at least 2 or more camera are running whenever a scene is shoot, thus, 2 or more angle of the same thing but only 1 will be shown. Or the director pick for them too? My question is basically how much they have a said in a movie making compare to the director?
Also I was wondering who deal with those fancy changes of scene like said zooming into somebody's eye then voila we see the next scene in the eye.?

Schoonmaker won for the Aviator iirc, and Scorsese surely missed out on that one.

My favorite is The Aviaor for that year too but that's a very good year.
I like them Aviator, Finding Neverlang, Million Dollar baby and Ray are great in their own way.
And he sure missed out 2 mores for Goodfellas and Raging Bull.
To rub it in, he has to win it by the weaker one The Departed. wtf
