Finally, I take the plunge into converting one of my rooms into HT room as Home Minister gave me the green light rclxm9.gif

It's been a near 'potong stim' scenario today. The shipping guy 4got abt my shipment. Luckily, I made a call to them. The pj and screen reached in the evening. sweat.gif

I checked the packaging of the screen. Upon checking, it stated MW White. Hmm.... that fella told me out of stock. Only left woth HC Grey screen. Hopefully, it is matt white screen. Btw, it is Draper 92" 16:9 HDTV format screen.

I took some photos of it. But, due to some uploading prob with imageshack, cant upload all the photos doh.gif

However, I havent decided which DVDP to go for. So, I brought home Pioneer DV-400 and Sony old's NS-76 for a shootout. I ll be using old faithful GIEC HVD player too, which is able to upscale to 1080p via component. whistling.gif

Tomorrow will be a rather busy day for me as I ll try to set it up. Got to shift most of the AV gears from living room to upstair. Luckily, my brother will be here to help me out rclxms.gif

I thought it would be an easy task to do all the shifting in one go. Oh boy, I am wrong. So darn wrong. Now, freaking tired. Got to rest first.

Looks promising. BTW, how much did the projector cost?

A few suggestions. You might want to seal the window to get a real dark room. I think you might want to get some carpeting to prevent echoes and that will help conceal the back speaker wires.

Bro, this is initial stage only. I have all the curtains (out goes the blind) and carpets to do the job. Some ambient light will still do as this projector churns out 1,400 ansi lumens. Tested it in the afternoon. Still able to see clearly. We'll see how it goes.

Next step is to install a customised bracket to secure the Draper as well as the curtain.

The DVD racks, the cabinets, the coffee table and leather sofa is in the room. These stuffs will also play role as 'acoustic treatment'.

Will calibrate the sound by using Radioshack SPL meter.

I havent got the time to align the screen correctly. Now, it's a bit tilted. Hence, the picture aint look good. Suspected the bracket isnt level or the curtain behind the screen is the culprit. Yet to find out.

I only did a minor calibration on the HD65, let alone the whole sound system. Hopefully, I have the time to do so this weekend. I hate tweaking as it consumes a lot of time. doh.gif

Yes, it is quite ugly looking. However, it does have blue backlight, which will be convenient and easy to see in darkened room.

Just managed to have some time to do some sound calibration and tweaking. Have to get back the radioshack for accurate calibration. I have decided that I will keep DV400. Sony NS76 will have to make its way back to shop.

Tomorrow, have to tidy up the messy cabling. I am short of carpets or rugs. Need to do shopping at Ikea for the cheap rugs.

Belum. Peasant grade only. Aint Elite class yet. blush.gif

This HD65 is quite impressive as it is quite bright (1,600ansi lumens) and works well with almost all type of rez including the holy grail; 1080p 24fps apart from the norm 1080p 60Hz.

The pj is resting on coffee table, 11ft from the screen. Comfy sofa is another 2.5 feet back. Fan noise is tolerable. There is mild rainbow effect from this tiny pj. But it aint annoying enough to bother me.

Now, trying to save enough to buy a PS3. Need to go on diet and ride motorcycle to work to save cost.

Bro, you can set a room for HT easily if you want it.

Still got thing to do as the curtain is affecting the screen making the picture looks a bit tilted. Need the screen to be flat and not being touched by the curtain. Time to Ikea again.

blush.gif Done.

Yes, available locally.

I think (got to ask sifu ar188) The 1080/24fps is the standard format being used. So, in this case, if it is compatible, it wil accpet the signal and downgrade it to 720p, minimising any motion juddering issue that plague 1080p 50/60. Correct me if I am wrong.

if the 720p proj able to playback at 48 or 72HZ, then 1080/24 will eliminate the 3:2 pulldown issue

if playback at 50 or 60hz, still have to convert, but minimized errors to conversion at projector side... I think la.. but so far... for my proj.. inputting hdmi at 720p/60 or 1080i/60 or 1080p/24 also not much diff when casual viewing.. but of coz if proj can accept 1080/24, why not.. biggrin.gif

Gua not BOSS lah (pointing at rx330)

I have use this pj for less than 20hrs. Daytime viewing is still good with some ambient lights.

This projector is really bright and quiet too (at least for me). However, with the absence of lens shift, positioning is less versatile.

Will try to upload some photos during daytime viewing

Via HDMI? Did they upscale? I audition a shop in my hometown. HD65 with Pioneer BDP and Onkyo 905. Really astounding; PQ and sound.

Mine looks ok when being upscaled. Still need to calibrate a bit more on the PQ. Hopefully, got time to do so this weekend.

I will try to borrow a BDP to test HD65 performance.

apis, based on ur 15 X 8 , i assume tat the screen would be @ the 8 ' wall. for tat size, the most u can go is bout 80+ inches diagonally @ a throw distance of 10 feet or so

i think 7 feet shundt have much differece , but if u getting a sony AW 3LCD, i can assure u, the pixel is visible

ur correct about the screen would be on the 8'

y sony AW 3LCD got diff?

planning to go with epson or optoma.. see the budget 1st.

if 720p & 1080p dosent have so much diff, then im okay with 720p/1080i

3LCD can see pixel ones, even though if its 1280 X 720
for me, maybe becos i purposely find its flaw, but i asked my wife, she says she sees nothing ( i see reflections on plasma, but she doesnt notice as well tongue.gif)

personally i havent demoed the HD 65 , but for DLP base projector, i guess the flaw would be the rainbow effect, some ppl can accept it, some cant, when u get used to it, it wont be there no more, maybe the same goes for 3LCD projectors

pixel is annoying for me though

if u get this entry levels HD projectors, u will be goig 720p, no 1080i liao biggrin.gif

i duuno how much would the epson cost, but rite now, i think optoma HD65 would have the best valule, and its replacement is cheap as well

The Epson should be abt RM5.5 - 5.9K.

On rainbow effect, that depends each individual. Some have sensitive eyes (tto bad).

Bro, 7002 sld be a good AV rcvr. But, Marantz aint my cup of tea. Prefers either Yammy or Onkyo as I have owned Denon, HK, and Sony before.

Aiyo, that is not a good thing. As for me, I also dun want to bring up the BDP to my wife yet, coz I can tell the winds not blowing in the right direction yet. Will have to save up the funds and then slowly nudge her in the right direction. Don't worry bro, here is my motto, if you really want it, there will always be a way to get it... trust me.

I have not been keeping abreast with equipment prices, but SGD2.4k sounds like a darn good deal.

but the real question is should i save to buy fullhd projector or close my eyes and buy this HD65?

In your opinion, is there a significant, day-and-night difference between native 720p and 1080p projector?

for temporary i put a lot of pillows and thick carpet and thick velvet curtain.. helps a lot! smile.gif

for proper acoustics consultation will cost me a bomb.

The only thing the projector lacks is better black level. I wouldn't hesitate using this projector though.

bro Htkaki what do you think of Pioneer Hdmi DVD player like dv600, is it worth to buy?
another question is if ur using PS3 to watch Blue Ray movies but you only have an av receiver tat only support DTS and DD, Blue Ray got option to choose back the old technology like DD or DTS or not?

Thanks for informing me, I did not notice it. The PS3 pics make me drool.gif. Do u have pics of HD and normal DVD of the same movie for that can be used as a comparo. Wanna see if playing HD thru a 720p is worth the fuss... If u dun have nevermind, no need to specially take the photos. I will try to find some comparo online.

Hi guys....cash 5.9K sounds ok...I will confirm this within 2 weeks ...still need to check the cash flow..!

wud there be any problems w the panny in terms of PQ and other issues..reading timotthy and jasonlky threads they seem to be not so keen after testing them but then again my eyes are lowya a bit and may not see those things that u guys can detect.

I also realise after doing a bit of reading on pj review and pj central it may be the only pj bright enough and suitable for the long throw that i need at the price thats reasonably within my budget

If not mistaken, only Panny AX-100 has iris issue. I guess AX-200 is ok.

The issues that bro Tim and I had was with the older AX100. I believe that the AX200 has most of the problems sorted. I have found AVS Forum to be a good source of complaints. If there is anything wrong with the projector, those guys there will beat it to death!!

Hi,

Wow 18ft is a distance woh.. should not be a problem wat pj u buy.. but I think u ll need a light controlled room.. my tw700 at 17ft away needs to be jacked up to brightest settin when watchin in daytime wif normal (not blackout) curtains n tinted windows, but since installin blackouts I can use de lo lite settin again..

Uhm epson is a lot cheaper then ur listed 8+k la.. there are a few reasons why all 3(tim, jason n me) chose de epson over panny la but u go check out de posts on panny(avs) first plus demo(if u can) before u decide for urself.. one thin I find epson better than panny is de warranty - 2yrs against pannys 1..

Cheers

And 1 more thing, even though the Epson TW700 has 1600lumens on paper, in real terms it is as bright as the AX100's 2000lumens. But in reality very few of us use the brightest settingcoz the kaler sucks.

Agree on the point that u must audition, coz you may or may not like the smoothscreen tech used in the AX200. I read that the smoothscreen in AX200 has beeb enhanced, it is software controlled to give optimum sharpness... coz many people complained that the AX100 was blur... me included.

Hi jason,

I did go to the AVS forum but sometime it all get VERY confusing to make a decision..!!!...I'd rather have 3 or 4 or 5 well versed ppl who are into the HT experience making their decisions and just go w the flow..! definitely ur combine experiences makes a difference to me..I may not see defects in kaler or PQ as you guys can ( my gf says i'm kalerblind sometimes ! )

I have own the AX100 before for 3 months before it was stolen. I now own the AX200 and I must say its an excellent projector. I paid about RM 5.3k for it but this was because the shop took pity on me for my stolen AX100. I'm using PS3 to watch blu-ray now and I must say the PQ is jaw dropping. You don't need a 1080p projector because I doubt you can tell the difference with AX200.

That's pretty good distance. My PJ is in my living hall now as I live in a condo and I only have 13' between me and the screen. I'm using a 92" Draper Onyx fix grey screen. It works really well with the projector. I'm planning out my new HT room when I move to my new house next year, but that's still a long way to go.

720p is actually very good already and more affordable. I watched Planet Earth the other day and the details blew me away! If you are interested, you can always drop by my place to test it out.

Cheers!

I bought my unit from musical image too. Great people there. I had an issue with my ax100 after using it for 100 hours and they swap it for me one-for-one with no questions ask. So if you really want to get the ax200, go get it from there! They are the main distributors too so they will be able to give you the best price.

I think like they mention, if you got the money go for ax200. What convince me the most was this review:

http://www.projectorcentral.com/panasonic_...r_projector.htm

The most remarkable feature of this projector to me is the outstanding rendition of 1080p film material from HD DVD and Blu-ray. The compression into 720p sacrifices surprisingly little detail. Quite honestly, the image at first glace looks as if it were coming from a 1080p projector. You do notice the lower resolution in white block letters of titles and credits, where edges are just a bit less precise than they are on a native 1080p projector. But for the most part, the video image itself looks very close to 1080p resolution. In addition to the excellent compression, the complete absence of pixel structure contributes to this impression. We can discern subtle differences only because we spend many hours looking at these products with the same test clips. But the typical consumer would have no problem believing the AX200U was a 1080p projector if they didn't know differently.

The above is an excerpt from the review. Go read it. Projector central rated the projector 5 stars in every department.

some cameras are more noisy than others. especially sony's.
mine is cheap compact canon.....quite good!

what you can try is this -

1. freeze your dvd/BD player first
2. use a tripod - no tripod then use a make shift tripod like some boxes etc
3. set your camera's ISO to 100 or less
4. then take the shot

lesser ISO will be better but since its a dark room, you will need the tripod to steady everything

If it is really about noise, u need to use lower ISO setting (eg. 100). But if lowlight, lower ISO will make your camera adjust the shutter speed setting to slower also. Mean...tripod is mandatory. nod.gif

Actually for the asking price, the picture is OK.

As for taking photos, in a fully darkened room, you are advised to use a tripod or some form of support no matter what ISO you use. As for me I prefer ISO 50, without flash (obviously) mounted on a tripod. I use the timer function (set at 2 seconds) to activate the shutter coz there must be zero vibration when the shutter is open... and the shutter will be open for an eternity..... 4-5 seconds.

Well... that is the correct rule for general snapping. As ISO800 will let u take clearer pics at lower light settings. The problem is that at ISO800 noise appearing as grainy pictures start appearing and that reduces the clarity and poppyness of the pictures.

The picture has a bluish tinge. I went back and read the guys settings, apparently it was intentional as he was compensating for better whites. He was projecting onto a yellow wall.

It gives you an idea of what a projector can do. It cannot replace an audition if you have an intentionto buy.

I agree that it doesn't make all that much sense to be showing projector PQ by taking stills using a digicam. Wouldn't the result be dependent on a number of factors such as digicam quality, photographic talent, compression of the file before uploading to forum, etc?

And furthermore, how well the projector handles movement is one of the main criteria that separates the men from the boys, and that ain't gonna be demonstrated by taking stills of a paused movie.

Just my two cents. Oh, now have to round up/down to nearest 5 cents, so this just my zero value opinion. whistling.gif

LOL..... I am old. If 2v, also near to death. Luckily, it is BD

Added on July 20, 2008, 9:31 amAfter much thinking and consideration, I took the plunge and bought the RX-V1800 yesterday from A&L.

I must admit that while I was looking for an AVR that could do independent crossover for each channels (which 1800 cant), there isn't any other viable option now. Moreover, my reliable source told me that the new batch of AVR (in Sept) will be more pricey sweat.gif .

(sourgrape a bit)... While independent crossover is good, it has also one disadvantage. If some channels are being set at low crossover, the amp might have to work harder to drive these since it did not channel out all low freq to sub.

Just finished setting up the unit but yet to test as I am not feeling well for the past few days sad.gif Maybe will do calibration later.

Here are some shots taken :

Tks, bro.

Yes, it is QED Qunex Silver Reference connected to my Pioneer DV400S.

Now, going to do the initial calibration first. As I havent got my surr rear spkrs, just simply use YPAO. When I got my spkrs for 7.1 setup, then I will also use SPL meter to do a proper one.

I am going to sell off the AVR2802 for the funding of my surr speakers. I am thinking of buying KEF / Klipsch. Rick pushing me to buy psb Alpha B1 biggrin.gif

I am going to sell off the AVR2802 for the funding of my surr speakers. I am thinking of buying KEF / Klipsch. Rick pushing me to buy psb Alpha B1  biggrin.gif

Oh, you're using the coaxial version, SR75? I'm using the SR-SW model for subwoofer. The CHT-10R got 2 LFE input, should I use a Y-connector? Will it be an improvement? hmm.gif

Why are you connecting the DV-400S using coaxial? I'm also using the same exact model, but I only use one HDMI cable for both audio and video.

I'm also looking to upgrade my surrounds (for lower frequency response, maybe 80Hz or lower). But I want smaller ones so I can wall-mount. Do you have any suggestions?

Mine is old gen sub with no LFE input. So, it is better that you give a try (no harm).

Thought of not wasting this expensive cable tongue.gif . Tried just now. The coaxial carries better weight and details than HDMI. Strange hmm.gif I thought it is suppose to be digital signal (101010).

All of my current speakers can go 45Hz and below. So, I will be getting similiar speakers. Then, I will calibrate it all over again using SPL meter.

How about B&W DM600 S3 as surr. It comes with bracket for wall mount. PSB Alpha B1 doesnt comes with a bracket for wall mount. Else, it could fit the bill. Other option is MS bipolar spkr but I am not so impressed with its build and SQ though. Anyway, what's your budget? I will be in KLIAV to check out surr speakers too.

Tks, bro.

Tested it briefly just now.

I must say that it is very impressive even in DTS / DD as compared to my AVR2802.

While it is unfair to do a comparison in this way, Yammy's bass is solid but not too hard hitting (that's even before running in). It sheer power (130W compared to 90W in 2802) is able to push my Klipsch to 'wake up'. I set the LFE to 'BOTH'. Now, I can feel more grunt out of it.

When it comes to PCM, I must say that there are noticable improvements in SQ. I am hearing more details and the bass is like on steriod (megatron007 was right abt it).

Tested Black Hawk Down, Die Hard 4.0, and Fifth Element BD. Now, I knew what am I missing whistling.gif There bags of details in this lossless codecs. Oh yes, now I clearly understand why megatron007 told me that his speakers couldnt take it. I crank it up to 32dB on the dial, the Klipsch is churning out great low bass with sheer power. Luckily, it aint hard sweat.gif .

Will calibrate the center spkr to work at its best since this is the most important unit of all.

Then, I tested Shakira BD. Mamamia..... the SQ is fantastic! The beat of the drum is energetic and the overwhelming sounds of the environment is breathtaking. The vocal is so wub.gif

On another footnote, this amp along with lossless codecs, at best have to be partnered with 'capable' speakers (no pun intended and not trying to praise or LCLY abt my setup) to appreciate its 'beauty'. Else, the speakers will run 'coarse' or losing its control. Hence, noise being created. rclxub.gif

The YPAO is easy to use. Set it up on my tripod and placed it on my sofa. Press a few buttons and after a few minutes and test tones, it is done.

Well said, agreed whole heartedly. And the YPAO is quite accurate actually, especially with the distance. Of course still need some tweaking here and there. biggrin.gif

Yeah... now I am broke. No more 5 meals a day. Changed to 3 meals a day. Have to eat bread days and nights.

Now, it is BD time. But, will only buy worthwhile movies. Now, need to think whether to go for 7.2 setup since the LFE is overwhelming now. A bit worried it would be an 'overkill' to have a 7.2 setup in my 'small' room.

LOL.....

I definitely need to try passing over audio thru coaxial. I've been using HDMI since day one I got my 663. I know coaxial is definitely better than optical but never actually try to compare with HDMI. Maybe bcoz I like the idea of using a single cable to do all the job tongue.gif

Music I use pure direct most of the time or straight if I want more bass from sub.
Music video or live consert I use straight all the time coz music with added effect processing sounded funny with too much ambience.
Movie I just press button number 1 and all good to go laugh.gif

I use STRAIGHT all the time for movies/concerts. The track has been mixed the way the director intended, I don't want to hear differently. biggrin.gif

Pure Direct for CDs. For other stereo sources, depends, mostly STRAIGHT, sometimes I use DTS:Neo Music to get the surround working. thumbup.gif

I watched Die Hard 4.0 in DTS HD MA. Crank up to 30dB. It is really loud at this point. I didnt find it 'harsh'. Oh yes, I read the review that if this 1800 will sound 'strained' under explosive scores. But, I didnt notice it. Maybe they are testing it at reference level. hmm.gif I wonder how it will sound at 20dB sweat.gif

Never before, I felt the power of all my speakers. The KEF surr spkrs are working beautifully with full of energy. The center is 'emphasising' dialogue in a more pronounced way. As for the front, The dual 10" woofers in each cabinets are restless, pumping out bass with ease. I suspect it is due to its 130W per channel rating.

When I have the time and after I got my rear surr spkrs, I shall fine tune it again as there are rooms for improvement.

Just tested 300. The 5.1 uncompressed is louder than Dolby True HD with more details. Abt the low end grunt, I feel both are on par. However, not all BDs are encoded in 5.1 uncompressed. Then again, I suspect it could be due to studio recording of the format itself (lower vol of Dolby True HD)

I tried cranking it up to 24dB, which is 2dB less than my usual vol when I was using 2802. Fuyoo, too b**dy loud! The bass is taut and punchy. The sound is just too 'overwhelming'. Quickly, turn the vol down to 32dB.

Itchy hands now. Looking for rear surr spkrs to complete my 7.1 setup. HT hobby damn wallet busting cry.gif That's why I decied to rename my topic to 'not So Budget HT room setup'.I did a rough calculation for the money that I'd spent on this. At least RM21K liao for my 17 yrs of this hobby. Lately, spent too much. Have to get some 'soft' loan from rx330 or Taukeh BD blush.gif

HTkaki,
I need to crank up my Yammy to min -26db to get clear sound for Astro....
If I am alone watching BD at home, I'll crank up the volume to -15db with PCM/dts-ma and -12bd for TrueHD
Does this mean that my V861's 105W power not good enough for me??? especially if I matrix the 5.1 to 7.1....I think the per channel power goes down really bad for the V861 to drive 8 speakers...maybe only around 50-60W per channel for 7.1

Only RM21k in 17 years? I must do check and balance now. I've spent RM12k (not including LCD TV), and I only started this HT hobby seriously in November last year. doh.gif

I started November last year also and already spent about 18k so far. Estimated to shoot up to 21k soon once I get my BD player sweat.gif

NOW who is the ELITE HT Taikor/Taukeh here.....

HTkaki,
I need to crank up my Yammy to min -26db to get clear sound for Astro....
If I am alone watching BD at home, I'll crank up the volume to -15db with PCM/dts-ma and -12bd for TrueHD
Does this mean that my V861's 105W power not good enough for me??? especially if I matrix the 5.1 to 7.1....I think the per channel power goes down really bad for the V861 to drive 8 speakers...maybe only around 50-60W per channel for 7.1
Demn....no marney to change receiver liao lar.... cry.gif

waaa .. i crank normally to -20/-18 or -16/-15 for sum syiok or quiet movie

for dobi TRU HD... ya la ..have to crank to -16/-12 tat range la

I feel you, taukeh tongue.gif

My previous Denon AVR is serously lacking power (90W), which I only realised upon getting my new toys. Now, running 6.1. When I cranked my 1800 to 24dB, my wife made noise downstair as she was watching Astro. Did I mentioned that my surr speakers really come alive? whistling.gif

Taukeh, buy lah.

p.s: for the record, I aint ELITE as being claimed by some parties blush.gif tongue.gif
