Anamorphic: 2.35:1

HD Cam Records (like concerts):
1.78:1

So for theatrical movies with AR 1.85:1 you'll see a very small black bars that you won't notice.

Other than that, yes, you'll see big black bars on top and bottom.

Few titles I know with 1.85:1 AR:

Hellboy
Cast Away
Stranger Than Fiction

You have to see the aspect ratio but I believe most will be like that because the movie is filmed in a wider ratio than our TV can support (yes even wider than your widescreen TV/monitor).

Some movies does modify it in the way that it will fill the TV (pan and scan) but this usually means a degrade in quality if I am not wrong. Most people prefer the letterbox version (black bars) which is the way the movie is meant to be watched.

that's why people are going 1080p projector with anamorpic horizontal expansion (HE) lens.. you won't get black bars at the top/bottom.

or else, get a elite TV with HD Zoom function (careful many TVs (or dvd player) can do zooming in SD signal but not in HD 720p/1080i/p signal)
