Updated Warner Release Slate for 2008 and BeyondWarner Bros. Our good friends over at The Digital Bits were able to squeeze Warner for a little more information about some of the catalog titles expected to be released on Blu-ray this year. The current goal is to release a Blu-ray version of any catalog film day-and-date with a Special Edition DVD release. This will take some time to implement, but they hope to get that policy up-and-running by the end of the summer.
Without further delay, here is the updated list of titles announced by Warner for Blu-ray release.08Q1
* Bonnie and Clyde: Ultimate Collector's Edition
08Q2
* Dirty Harry: Ultimate Collector's Edition Box Set (Dirty Harry, Magnum Force, The Enforcer, Sudden Impact, Dead Pool, and Clint Eastwood: Out of the Shadows)
08Q3
* An American in Paris * Batman Anthology * Batman Begins: Limited Collector's Edition Box Set * Gigi * How the West was Won * The Dark Night
08Q4
* A Christmas Story: Ultimate Collector's Edition * Otis: Uncut
2008
* The Adventures of Robin Hood * Casablanca * Clash of the Titans * Excalibur * Forbidden Planet * Heat * Grand Prix * The Matrix Trilogy * Mutiny on the Bounty * V for Vendetta
2009
* Ben-Hur * Gone With the Wind * North by Northwest * The Wizard of Oz * Woodstock
As you can see, those missing Warner titles which have been released on HD DVD but not Blu-ray are still coming - including 'The Matrix' trilogy.
Warner is discovering that many catalog titles don't have transfers which are good enough for Blu-ray release, including 'Clash of the Titans' (which has been delayed for restoration) and 'Heat' (which Michael Mann has just agreed to supervising a new 1080p transfer). Rest assured, Warner will continue to scrutinize every release to ensure it looks and sounds as good as possible before being released to the public.
Speaking of audio, Warner has heard your cries, and they will start releasing all high definition titles with lossless audio. Obviously, the switch to Blu-ray exclusivity makes this move easier, as the format has much more storage and bandwidth.
Additionally, any Warner catalog title you hear that is receiving 4k restoration will get a Blu-ray release. Warner spent years mastering their catalog at 1080i, and they are now having to do new masters in order to get a perfect transfer. Some catalog titles will receive 4k restoration (four times the size of 1080p), and any title you hear receiving this treatment will get a Blu-ray release
Remember, these are just a taste of what's coming from Warner this year, and there is still a bunch of titles planned for release that they are holding under their jacket, not to mention all the new release titles. But even with the list we have today, its shaping up to be a great year for Blu-ray fans.

Netflix Goes Blu-ray ExclusiveBlu-ray Disc The popular online video rental service Netflix has announced that they have decided to support Blu-ray exclusively for high definition movie rentals. Pointing to the Warner Brothers exclusivity announcement as the main reason for the shift, Netflix will no longer purchase movies in the rival HD DVD format, and once the life cycle for those discs has ended, they will no longer stock the format for rent.
Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix commented, "The prolonged period of competition between two formats has prevented clear communication to the consumer regarding the richness of the high-def experience versus standard definition. We are now at the point where the industry can pursue the migration to a single format, bring clarity to the consumer and accelerate the adoption of high-def. Going forward, we expect that all of the studios will publish in the Blu-ray format and that the price points of high-def DVD players will come down significantly."
While only a small percentage of Netflix users rent high definition movies, the majority of those who do take advantage of the services are renting Blu-ray. They expect that the shift to a single format will ultimately allow Netflix to provide a better service to those high definition customesource : blu-ray.com

Michael Bay Praises Blu-ray's SuccessMichael Bay Outspoken director Michael Bay is once again singing the praises of Blu-ray, this time in celebration of the recent Blu-ray successes. At the Visual Effects Society's sixth annual award show, where he presented the award for animated character in a motion picture, he remarked, "Blu-ray's better, and I told everyone. I was very vocal about it. I knew HD [DVD] was not going to make it."
Bay has personally supervised Blu-ray transfers for his films 'The Rock' and 'Pearl Harbor' and says it has resulted in a sharper image that is "closer to what it should look like." He also isn't afraid of grain: "Yeah, there's some grain, pushing film, shooting at night. There's actually some grain in Transformers. We pushed it just a little too much. I don't mind grain. Grain has a vibe."
He also spoke about the prospects of bringing his film 'Armageddon' to Blu-ray, but mentioned that it would need a brand new master. "The Armageddon [master] was burned in a fire apparently, so we've got to re-master the whole movie," noted Bay.

Wal-Mart To Exclusively Support Blu-rayBlu-ray Disc Wal-Mart has confirmed with Blu-ray.com that beginning in June the world's largest retailer will only stock Blu-ray players and movies. Over the next few months, they will phase out all HD DVD products and reorganize their stores to focus on Blu-ray. This move comes days after similar statements of support for Blu-ray by Internet movie rental site Netflix and retailer Best Buy.
Gary Severson, senior vice president, Home Entertainment, Wal-Mart, U.S. commented, "We've listened to our customers, who are showing a clear preference toward Blu-ray products and movies with their purchases. With the customers best interest in all we do, we wanted to share our decision and timeline with them as soon as possible, knowing it will help simplify their purchase decision, increase selection, and increase adoption long term. We anticipate enhancing our selection with continued great values in hi-definition Blu-ray products, so our customers can further enhance their entertainment experience at home."
This is just the latest in a series of shifts towards either Blu-ray support or exclusivity since Warner Brothers announced in January that they would go Blu-ray exclusive in June.
Earlier today, sources reported that Toshiba would soon be announcing that they would drop support for HD DVD. No official statement has come from them, but without support from retailers, it will probably come sooner than later.source : blu-ray.com

Niveus Goes Blu-ray ExclusiveBlu-ray Disc Niveus, producer of home media servers, has announced that effective immediately they will offer Blu-ray drives on all of their server products and will begin phasing out their HD DVD supplies. As a former HD DVD supporter, the company is abandoning the format due to consumer demand for Blu-ray products and current market shifting towards Blu-ray.
Tim Cutting, CEO and Co-Founder, Niveus Media commented, "Incorporating Blu-ray into our offering has always been part of the plan but the demand from our customers, market trends, and recent announcements expedited our decision to come to market with Blu-ray support sooner rather than later. While we have stood behind HD DVD as a viable high-definition platform, Niveus engineers have been running Blu-ray in our testing facilities and are very impressed with the performance and integration with our servers."
Existing customers who purchased servers with HD DVD drives in the past 90 days will be eligible to upgrade to their Blu-ray product line for no additional cost.

Toshiba Resigns from Format War; Blu-ray Wins!Blu-ray Disc Sources close to the situation have alerted Blu-ray.com that Toshiba is expected announce at a press conference to be held at 5pm (local time) in Tokyo, Japan that they have ended their support of the HD DVD format. Toshiba will announce that effective immediately, production of HD DVD hardware, software, and authoring tools will cease, and that sales and support of existing products will end sometime in March.
As the main supporters of HD DVD, their resignation effectively ends the format war. Blu-ray has won.
Since Warner Brothers' announcement that they would exclusively support the Blu-ray format, rumors have been circulating that HD DVD's lagging sales and loss of studio support would force Toshiba to exit from the high definition format war. The weeks following were riddled with additional studios, retailers, and distributors announcing that they too would support Blu-ray exclusively, concluding with Wal-Mart's announcement last Friday that they would drop support of HD DVD in June.
This information should be considered a rumor until Toshiba makes the official announcement, but our sources have always proven accurate. Once the official announcement is released, we will update this post with any additional information.
