It makes no sense to increase price or stop promotions just because its a single format. In fact, it should allow more stores to compete with pricing as they only need to worry about stocking a single format.

It is now time to make HD affordable not push the price sky high. I am sure the BDA has more sense in them.

Great to hear that blu-ray has won the format war... being a loyal sony supporter (fanboy), I think Sony's gamble on PS3 has finally paid off. Now we can enjoy all the great movies on blu-ray.

Well, the blu-ray format managed to defeat hd-dvd but the PS3 is still way behind Wii and XBOX 360 in console sales so they need to put in more effort.

The interesting part is why Universal, Paramount & Dreamworks didn't mention anything after Toshiba's announcement, will they continue to release movies on hd-dvd or what?

Universal Preparing Titles for Blu-ray

Universal Studios The statement that Blu-ray fans have been waiting for nearly two years to hear, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment Craig Kornblau has announced that Universal Studios will begin distributing their films on the Blu-ray format. He commented, "While Universal values the close partnership we have shared with Toshiba, it is time to turn our focus to releasing new and catalog titles on Blu-ray."

He continued, "The path for widespread adoption of the next-generation platform has finally become clear. Universal will continue its aggressive efforts to broaden awareness for hi-def's unparalleled offerings in interactivity and connectivity, at an increasingly affordable price. The emergence of a single, high-definition format is cause for consumers, as well as the entire entertainment industry, to celebrate."

While no solid details about which titles or specific dates were revealed at this time, a more detailed announcement is expected soon.

You mean MKV files burnt as it is? Well, we don't have the hardware for that yet, so not really a direct war. Maybe in the far future when we have players that can decode that, just like DiVX now with the current DVD players. But even if that's possible, I think that MKV playability feature could only be added into BD players because we need >720p display output capability (well maybe upscaling DVD players, but that's another reason why BDA needs to fight off DVD).

But I don't see that happening soon. Unlike DiVX, MKV is not used in any HD/digital handycams, so there's no reason for the electronic companies make MKV capable players. Unless Uncle Ho expands their business and manufacture one. wink.gif

Or you mean MKV files burnt as DVDs? I won't waste RM5 to Uncle Ho for that. The MKV files may be ripped from HD-DVDs/BDs, yes great quality even at 720p. But when burnt as DVD format, it will be downgraded to 480p only. I have done this myself. Though the quality is slightly better (actually just little sharper, little nicer colors, some better blacks, but details will definitely be lost. a lot) than retail DVDs. laugh.gif

The best way to enjoy MKV is on PS3/360 (need to be remuxed first), or on a computer. If that is the purpose, I would rather download them myself. tongue.gif

Well, if MKV turns popular, companies will be making MKV-capable players pretty soon.

Macam DivX tongue.gif I am trying to cut off Uncle Ho so unless there are legal means for MKV.. I might as well just go BD.

There are a lot of hardwares now capable of playing mkv files but the price is almost the same like buying a PS3.
