Good job, Mindstorm.  With quick generational turnover like that, I think it's best to mate the big males as much as possible.  Catch, mate and release virgin females, and then look for the adult children in 3-4 months.

I'm doing something similar here, but my baby spider is taking much longer to grow.  Perhaps it's temperature/environment related.
It left the nest as a hatchling on Aug 14th.  Today it is still only slightly bigger than a hatchling.
*
mating them would be another problem too.

yeah, i would expect temperature to reduce rate of growth. u shld have a continuous supply of insects for ur hatchling to ensure max growth.

Hi all FS enthusiasts,
haha! very interesting story u have there and very gungho of u to try to comb so many areas in one weekend!

so hard to find insects meh? i think keeping 2-3 fs is quite simple. Doesn't take me more than 10min to find insects and feed them. Ants actually is quite alrite for fs because even in the wild, i think ants to make up a part of their diet esp if other insects are hard to come by.

yeah, those black ants u talk about really can invade almost all overlapping leaves, leaving little place for fs to live in. But that's nature. Animals colonize and get colonized all the time in the wild. Where fs would extinct in one place, they may start to grow in population in another place.

other species of jumpers are hard to come by, and i only take an interest in them when by luck i find a couple of those large majestic species eg hyllus, bavia or fierce ones eg mangrovejumpers, big-spider-star. Capturing clips on how other species square off(within same species or between 2 different species) would be another whole new interesting hobby.

u released all ur fs leow? even u biggest one?

...cuz i'm having a challenger waiting - Max. I realized Max isn't that small. i would certainly say he is the size of medium large. Definately bigger than jack. He is a size where no fs player would release. Seems to me he did expand a bit since his last moult and he matured beautifully. i did feed him a blood(mine) filled mosquito after a couple of days from his moult, maybe that helped a little. He is about 2 weeks after his last moult now and he is mighty healthy, alert, energtic and ready to take on the world!

Today's shot
Attached Image Attached Image

the mosquito that helped his expansion

and if our singapore brothers would to come up KL within 2 months, Max would be here awaiting to greet u guys!

Waddap Viper,

Wow, u r really good man, yah, i also think it is partial chop type. Cant confirm bc the other 2 spiders I have much smaller than him, so kecut straight. But i did see him try to chop through the cassette tape wall when he saw the other fs in the other case, ahhaha. What size do u think this is? I cant take any closer and he is jumpy, hard to focus.

I stay in Bukit Damansara, very near Sri Cempaka. Do u know where Plaza Damansara is? Near there also. Yah, looking forward to meeting up. Go cari fs alone quite ok, but so much more fun to go with friend. Lets meet up Sat next week, call Mindstorm too.

Oh today, i caught a fs, opened the leaf a bit, see male, then i cut leaf. Went home, discovered the poor guy only got 5 legs  sad.gif 3 on left (no kong) and 1 kong and 1 leg on right. He can barely walk, but can still jump. So i plan to let him go, but before that, just fight with a tiny male that i have. He is a full on chop! 5 legs still so ferocious, crazy. And btw, i think u guys are so right. After non-chop fight with chop, he becomes a chop! Didnt know this. But I dont really want my fs to become choppers, cuz risk of fatality much higher in fights. He cant even hunt for himself now, was really thirsty, shows he hungry also. Manage to feed him a fruit fly. Think i will keep him la, dont think he will survive outside on his own.

I dont normally use msn, but will start. My nick: kjinn@hotmail.com, but I dont use this email. Just for chat. Hope to see u next week, havea  good one.  thumbup.gif Hi Jong71 smile.gif
*
hoho kjinn, seems like we miss out on alot of fights all these years cuz my fren mangrovejumper also stays in Bukit Damansara and alot of our fs playing takes place in his house. Next time he comes back from US, should tinker u too.

let me know if u do wish to meet viper. i'll try to come too.
Viper, do u have any fs now?

On memory lane indeed but Sea wouldn't be alone... sad.gif
Took some time to provide some updates over the past week and i do write this with a heavy heart....

wow, good clips u had there. i like the "hilarious" one, pretty long and even fight but couldn't see the ending.

noticed u were using a piece of acrylic for ur platform. u bought it specifically for fs fights?

sorry to see u so sad over the lost of predator, such is our emotional attachment to our kings.
couldn't really see the fight details cuz the clip was quite dark, but can see it was a vicious match..

on a side note... we have reached over 120 pages for this tread. i heard from my sis that over 120page, usually the moderator will ask another new tread be started. so get ready. but sad to see this tread full of info will become oblivious in time to come. dunno wheather they will remove it one day.

anyway i checked our fs tread, 81,366 views for 121 pages. i think we have highest views and also highest ratio views(views to pages) in this Pet Wonderland forum. haha...another record for our fs community! thanks to all the brothers here who contributed. 3 cheers for FS and FS fanatics!!! rclxm9.gif

This next update i find it rather interesting, several weeks ago i shared about a sub-adult which i had caught...this fellow..
user posted image
Have been keeping "her" in isolation since day one, almost 3 weeks, was quite disappointing cause didn't see any molding so place "her" with a female. Guess what? the female charged towards "her" and started to fight (didn't capture this part) but what happens next is quite weird...

Adult? Sub-Adult?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-60cVbF7T6w
Observed that "she" approach the female like any other male, just that its body structure looks entirely like a female's (guess that's why the female charge at him initially)
Never encounter this before cause only see adult males doing this... only two possibilities.. either the fellow ALREADY is an adult male... doh.gif  or there is another molding expected in the near future... thumbup.gif will keep you guys updated, hope to see him change.... biggrin.gif
*
Great documentation! Without doubt this is that this is a sub-adult male. But i never thought that a sub-adult male would display mating ritual dance like a full adult male. Never have i encountered this before, probably maybe because never tried putting one with a female. But even so, at least by accident, through years of playing with fs, at least shld witness this behaviour one time, but never so until u showed us. Wonder wheather it is capable of mating and fathering slings like an adult male. Anyway, wonderful discovery. I'm sure if you keep it a bit longer, it will moult. Feed it fat fat... will moult into a bigger male.

I really had an enjoyable and exciting FS gathering day at SG.
hualao eh.. facinating coverage of your singapore trip!

putting our T.bhamoensis against the Suboppressa was really a good idea to compare their sizes. Impressive arm lengths. Was that Titan?

Titan really looks huge. I think Titan was as big as 6legs which i had. 6legs is slightly bigger than Bighead. I think that size is probably the max for T.bhamoensis and can be considered KingKong.

What type of leaves was Titan caught in?

heh, pretty quiet recently due to heat wave huh?

well, just in time for me to fill in a story for die hard fs lovers here.

Just a story about an adhoc hunt i had last tuesday. No plan at all. Was my off day and i have to sent a handphone back to my father-in-law cause he left it in my house when he came for a visit. Went all the way to Ampang(about 30km from my house) in the morning and just in the spur of the moment decided to scout around. i was driving my mum's car so i had absolutely no gear or containers whatsoever. I drove around to the edge of a forest reserve where many rich people stay around there and i spotted a nice free carpark(for a restaurant) which had nice growth at the sides where fs may strive. Directy opposite the carpark is actually the guard house of an expensive condo.
so yes, the people in their condo would be able to see wat i'm doing.

2nd pic can see the forest reserve in the background and at the left side, can see some shrubs growing on a fence where i hone in my fs radar ...Beyond the carpark on the left on much lower altitude is actually a golf course.
Attached Image Attached Image

parked my car next to the fence and from the front of the fence i spotted a nice sized female.
2nd pic is the back of the fence facing the thick growth. ooo.... every fs fan would love this kind of place...
Attached Image Attached Image

wah...very quickly i saw a white face looking up...such a nice feeling...haha
Attached Image

easy catch cuz the nest is formed from one leave and the leave stalk is easy to snap.
medium sized male...but one arm smaller. nice but doesn't look like king.
Attached Image Attached Image

i scouted around and saw a couple of youngs and nice fat females, including a virgin female eating an ant...
Attached Image

not very long, standing at the same spot i caught the first male, i saw a second one... looks bigger...
easily catch by breaking the leaf stalks of its nest, doing so carefully as not to alarm it
Attached Image Attached Image

wah, not bad, good size but unfortunately lost one side leg. hello, i'll name u Seevan then... for having seven legs.
Attached Image Attached Image
notice how i handle everything with no tools except barehands while taking pics also. ah... after years of catching fs.
sure many fs bro here also can do the same.

anyway i let both the males fight in the nest, and needless to say, Seevan won hands down with just pushing. so i let off the "one arm-proper bandit". see size difference
Attached Image

something interesting which we commonly see, 1st male was staying with a very young juvenile in the same nest
Attached Image
Seevan, the 2nd male was staying with a baby! in the same nest.
Attached Image
this is possible because the smaller fs is able to insert itself in the narrower part of the nest where the bigger fs can't reach it. apparently the smaller fs doesn't run away maybe because it gets protection from the larger fs

ok, by now i probably only spent 15 minutes here, so i want to scout some more...but how about Seevan? i broke its nest. Well, now need to use a tool... picked a straw lying on the ground, patch it up, let Seevan go in and leave the make-shift nest on the ground. Its a cool cloudy morning(around 10am by now) and my instinct tells me he won't run away.
Attached Image Attached Image

wah, i wearing only bermudas. so my legs are sunk into the deep leaf litter... dangerous...centipedes, snake?
Attached Image
saw a fat female and decided to collect it back
Attached Image
anyway, after searching for a while more, i didn't find anymore male so i decided to move to another spot..
ah...Seevan was still nicely in his psedo-nest, unaware he could make a easy escape from a mischievous human..
but hmm, how the heck am i going to transport these fellas(1 male and 2 fat females and 1 virgin female)?
i rummage thru some stuff in the boot and found these...haha!
the big container was empty and i stuffed it with leaves and put the 2 females in it.
aiya...the pill bag got a hole at the end.
Attached Image
well, no problem...i place Seevan in it along with the virgin female in the bag with a leave and place them like that in my bag(which i had only bills in a file ). The container sitting on the hole.
Attached Image
wala...no worries about fs running all over my mum's car and getting lost in it.

just a few meter away i found another nice spot... yummy full of wild pepper leaves..
Attached Image
very quickly just at the edge saw another male...but this one also got appendage problem! walau. anyway seems small, definately no match for Seevan, hence i let it past.
Attached Image
i was about to track downwards where suddenly i saw a "no trespasser" sign!
Attached Image Attached Image
u know, i saw the the web and also saw the owner was actually sitting on a leaf near the ground. went i walked forward, in a split second the owner smacked itself right in the middle of the web! damn fast.
well anyway, i guess i better go by then, had spend about an hour and a half here, including driving around further up the road before coming here. not that i was afraid of this orb web spidey, but i had another good reason...want to go to toilet...
this spot i hardly explore.... sure got a king in there. ah well... i come back next time.

2 minutes drive, and i'm back in the city stuck in a minor jam.
Attached Image
a quick peek in my bag and i saw Seevan trying to woo the virgin female...
Attached Image

ok, time to concentrate on the road and head home.

wait wait. one more pic to share. an adult male monkey showing off his manhood. haha!
Attached Image
actually higher up the road closer to the forest reserve, there was this huge group of monkeys eating mandarin oranges placed by people who got sick of eating them during CNY. so i just took one pic while driving past this group with several fierce looking males.

that was really a find. it must have been a pretty large leave to house so many fs inside...something like an apartment with rooms. hehe.

wah, nice one man. didn't know u were happy having holiday there.
Just tracking this genus is giving us an idea of how certain islands/countries were once closely joined together.
Didn't u take some pictures of the surrounding where u caught the T.sub?
seems getting a male is pretty hard for other species of Thiania. Among all kakis in this forum, the one from Cameron was the only male of another genus that we found.

of all the thiania listed, only bhamoensis and suboppressa has pics

I think the T. subs in Hawaii probably arrived at the island via human transport (i.e. boats delivering flora) from Asia.  It's the common mode of transfer for most spiders.  Web weavers often travel in crates and boxes from warehouse to warehouse.

The jumping spider site shows how many species of Thiania there are.  It would be awesome to get the less common ones found and photographed.

Wa.. sending FS over to SG via courier service?
Kinda high risk..coz if the van gets too hot... the FS will be dried out.
Need some live flies as food supply and wet cotton buds for drinks.
I just back from JB pc fair 5days work. If u let me know earlier i can hlp deliver it to SG.
Or when free just go visit SG new Sentosa Casino resort & Universal studio for holiday den bring FS along to fight.  laugh.gif
Cheers,

yeah...happen to many of my fs before.
well, i just want to try something different. see wheather a fs can reach sg from here alive via courier.
if died then too bad lor..

anyway, today i sent him off leow around 1pm.
here he is in the morning.
Attached Image
Fed him fruit flies, he was so greedy he captured 2.
Attached Image
i stuffed his transportation container with leaves in hope that it will cushion him when he gets tossed around...but he seems comfortable for the moment staying against the wall of the container..which isn't good for him against shock.
Attached Image Attached Image
at the end of the container I placed a tissue soaked with water. hopefully can last his journey
Attached Image
here u can see the bottom of the container is netted. here can see one of the fruitflies with one wing torned off, again i placed a couple of them there hopefully for his reserves, if he manage to catch them in total darkness in the maze of leaves... sweat.gif
Attached Image
i placed the container in the center of a box stuffed with newspaper. since the container has one end with netting, this means the total air reserve for him would be the whole box(minus the volume of the newspaper/container/leaves of course...)
Attached Image
and finally wrapped the box with a couple of layers of newspaper and then with a majong paper, labeled and ready to be sent off. This pic can compare the small container which housed the fs to the final parcel size.
Attached Image

i went to mailboxes service(a franchise) which was quite near my house. They have next day delivery(by DHL, UPS etc), even has a service before 9am! The personel there asked me what it was, being rather suspicious and i told them a white lie... "leaves sample"! If i tell them spider, they may not want to send livestock. She said, "Not urgent one izit?" I said,"Urgent! Otherwise my leaves would dry off!" haha!
Anyway i asked about the price... the price was RM90+! That was the minimum for a parcel which was below 0.5kg. Wow, too expensive man. I think better drop this project...

Then i went to post office and ask for post laju. The personel there didn't give a shit to what it was, just asked me to fill in a form, slapped it on, dumped the parcel one side and charged me. Total damage-RM48, that's like around SD 20+. Walau, still expensive. I was thinking i don't mind sending it if it was below RM20. Well... i have hardly send a parcel in my life before...one or twice but it was so long ago i forgot what price. Anyway, wth, for the fun of it and so i went for it. Pos laju is slower...takes 3-4 days she said. hoho... i guess i am not too optimistic about that. Anyway, lets hope for the best.

Uva, get ready to receive him this coming fri or sat...dead or alive.

ps. actually for that box size, i could have easily send more than 10 fs, which would bring the price of sending a fs down by a factor of 10, which would come to about RM5/fs which isn't that expensive...

hoho! success!
thank goodness the post office personnel underpromise and not overpromise. yesterday i was thinking if there is a delay or custom problem, then shit lah...if take more than 4-5 days then sure say bye-bye to Seaven. Yesterday i also saw a postman riding a motorbike at noon under the hot blazing sun sending letters among some shop houses, he had 2 bags which is expose to the direct sun daggling from the sides of his motor carrying all the letters .. i thot, die ler... if the parcel also like that for 1-2 hours while the postman travel, sure Seaven will die also. so happy he arrived safely!! rclxms.gif

he's yours now. thanks for adopting him. haha!

was there any live fruitfly still inside? was the tissue still wet?

looking forward to see him in some matches....

Actually another faster way to send fs over is via bus driver. Can reach SG same day about 5- 7 hrs trip.

Eg. just give Transnational bus driver to bring it to SG, Lavender station ticket counter.
Pay him RM5-10 is good enuf. Tell him the person's name tat will collect it at the ticket counter.
Once the driver reach there, he will leave the item at ticket counter.
Recepient can go to Lavender bus ticket counter there to collect.

Cheap and fast. No custom office check coz its a small box nia.
Cheers,
