V9 liaw ah.
So fast.

KLCI needs a serious correction, its too high liaw despite regional market is downtrend.
For the past one week, its local fund that is pour into KLCI. Imagine when GE rally is over, what will happen...

theres still hapseng which hasnt really boomed up, even though it has a greater market capitalization compared to KLUANG, Sarawak Plantation, SBagan and so on..

just my two cents though, lots of small caps out there that will have a spill over effect anyway if the plantation stocks continue to rise. flex.gif

Added on January 8, 2008, 12:10 pmI suspect investors are shifting their focus from plantation to something else. I see like they are buying other counters before lunch to prepare the rally again this afternoon.

Is it too late to jump into UEMBLDR boat now ??
Last time got someone mention KUB also as GE counter but now already 0.92

Looking at KLCI keep making new high the past few days make me scared to jump in... afraid if it drop down to 1400++ level sweat.gif

Since I just start investing last year... so KLCI keep green during these period of time is consider normal?
because of pre-CNY rally + GE rally(only for this yr)?

Anyone follows FCW?
This counter is just out from PN17 and the prices up like crazy.
Anyone has bought this counter? May I know if I buy before suspension, how much I will earn today?
If anyone knows how to do the math, then maybe we can search for the next counter that are coming out from PN17.

Like for FCW, they already got the approval. Everything should be proper right? Since they already got the approval, the risk to be delist should be very minimal. Please correct if I am too optimistics.

Like for FCW, they already got the approval. Everything should be proper right? Since they already got the approval, the risk to be delist should be very minimal. Please correct if I am too optimistics.

i am not talking about FCW, i was referring to those PN17 counters

i made a big mistake on the last day of FCW trading day before the suspension.. I bought 30,000 of FCW-wa at 0.08, the star's alan voon said FCW warrant holders are stand to lose because the warrant holders were seen to lose under the regularisation exercise. I sold all my 30,000 of FCW-wa on the last day at 0.045 and lost bout RM1.2k. After just 1 and half months, trading resumed and u look at FCW-wa now... sad.gif

what a painful experience.... ohmy.gif

realised losses.. subprime alone took away almost 12k from me.. And that makes my earlier profit wiped out. Counters like Lien Hoe, Equine, Ranhill, KBES, HK Cws helped to make some money the whole year..

Yes.. They are also used to own Asia Jaya (Armada Hotel) along the federal highway. It was stagnant for sometime at around 25 cents. I bought it there and sold at 0.38 prior to the subprime crisis...

Lee Kuan Yew made a statment that Malaysia's economy is strong & resilient for this whole year. It was in the news.
Maybe that prompted overseas & local investors to start buying

Dow futures at +7 points after hovering above +30 this morning.. not a good sign.. furthermore, Dow really tried hard to go back to positive territory at the closing last nite.. so, i expect Dow to fall tonite, profit taking in Bursa tomoro.. I may let go Equine soon...

This is we called pre-GE or pre-cny rally, people are getting their 'Ang Pow' already. smile.gif

KLSE is detaching itself from the world market currently, look at Maybank, up a whooping 70cents in a day. Kind interest to know whether who moves it as substantial shareholders need to disclose their changing position if they did in 1 or 2 weeks time.

Seems like a rotation play on heavy index linked counters. Wanna to do 1500 for GE show-off?

I believe steel counters already had their turn, so did plantation which saw some profit taking today. Commerz and Maybank represent the financial side which has been boosted. Since when did Maybank ever go up so high in a day?

Construction like UEM, MRCB, GAMUDA also had their share of boosts.

Properties like EQUINE are the obvious ones linked to government, not sure about the rest of properties that didn't move as much.

Try to find GLCs that has yet to be touched or pushed up yet. SAPCRES seem like a good counter to bet on or maybe TIMECOM as well?? Don't take my word for it, make your own assumptions.

Just one hour ago I heard an interview to a foreign capital investment company, Star Asset Management, they are positive on Malaysian stocks. (This kind of news has not been heard since August!)

sigh, tomorrow busy so first-half will have to miss completely.
Sapcres is in the money now, but I will not let go until it nears my TP: 2.50. Must untung kau-kau otherwise too much in/out end up with much lesser profit. (at this point of time, I believe it can't drop back to 1.50 again)

yup, doing very well. In fact. if u monitor exmobil and apple, u will find the there follow the common pattern.

When DJIA up/down abit, these 2 shares will rally ! It only plunge when DJIA plunge severely.

That's y i set my target price to buy these 2 shares at 0.08

for me, I won;t enter so early. I'm waiting until it drop to 0.07 or 0.08, then only i will buy. FYI. I think you can hold this share until march or later(when DJ recovering) when it start bearing fruits. This is just my point. Please judge by yourself.

Ermm..why need to look on S&P? Usually i look on DJ index.

From last Dec before Dec cut rate, it plunge till 12700++ before rallying to 13700++ (based on Dec FED cut rate) and drop after news come out.
This coming Thursday, Bernanke (FED) will give some speech. Dunno he will indicate there would be another cut rate by end of this month. or let it drop kao kao until next Tuesday(Citibank announce its financial result)

So guys, what do u think? wanna buy today or wait until next Tuesday after Citibank announce its financial result?
I assume next Tuesday will be good buying opportunities.

S&P is more accurate in determine how the market is going since it track a much larger pool of stock.

But those counters I pumped 2 weeks ago all went up...
TA, UEMBlder... All not bad ma...
Anyway, I wanna cut losses and sell off all.

Only counters I have now are TA, UEMBlder and IRIS.

I bought UEM earlier (a yr ago) at RM1.70. Now, recently bought another round at RM1.15 So, at current price... it contras off.
TA, I bought at RM1.25
Iris - This one suicide... bought at RM0.295, RM0.24 - So, this one big loss.

But if I sell all now, I will get 0 loss.

Too high risks to bear.

Reason:
Share prices closed higher as property stocks were supported by growing hopes for further US interest rate cuts, while commodity counters surged after a fresh rise in gold and crude oil prices. Dealers also noted that mainland banks saw renewed interest on hopes of solid 2007 earnings after China Merchants Bank projected 110 pct growth in net profit earlier this week. The Hang Seng index closed up 502.95 points or 1.86 pct at 27,615.85.

Becareful for those short term trade, don't be too greedy. icon_idea.gif
Market high possibility will ride on momentum to shoot higher as people will 'bang' on GE rumour to play on it. As long it doesn't die off, it will be quite awhile for this market to have strength.

As always a reminder although not foolproof, it is always a piece of good advice, Buy on rumour and sell on news.

Enjoy the market while good, just don't be too greedy.

I wonder HSI and HKCW rally a little bit too early today???

KLCI closes in on 1,500 mark

PETALING JAYA: The KL Composite Index (KLCI) was a whisker away from the critical resistance level of 1,500 points yesterday.

The benchmark index hit a new intra-day peak of 1,498.86 points in the afternoon.

It ended the day 1.92 points up at 1,491.66 following some late profit-taking activity ahead of a public holiday today.

Selling on major banking stocks also helped prevent the local bourse from breaching the 1,500-point level, dealers said.

All is not lost, however, as analysts and fund managers believe that it will only be a "matter of time" before the index reaches 1,500 points and, more importantly, a breakout after that level.

Pacific Mutual Fund Bhd chief executive officer and chief investment officer Michael Auyeong said: "The current momentum is strong.

"The local market has been on a run since the third week of December, very much against the grain of global markets. Volumes have been impressive and market breadth has gotten progressively better."

Auyeong believes that the local market's defensive nature, its domestic-oriented drivers against a backdrop of global uncertainty, and the push in the commodity segment are the main attractions that will continue to drive the market.

"And, of course, at this point is the 'popular' speculation on the timing of general election factor (which is pushing up the index)," he said.

According to him, the 1,500-point level might give the market an excuse to pause and "catch its breath," but technicals suggest a breakout would follow not long after a short respite.

Fortress Capital Asset Management (M) Sdn Bhd associate director, investment Michael Lai said: "At this level, the market is definitely trying to test the 1,500 level. The election play is obvious but healthy commodity prices, loans growth from the banking sector and foreign fund inflows are also helping keep the market robust."

Auyeong warned that while the current run-up in the KLCI had fundamental basis, a wholesale decoupling from global markets might not be so easy to achieve.

"Major overseas markets, which are currently a bit oversold, may experience some short-term technical rebound but there are some critical support levels, which if broken, could lead to significantly more downside in global equities," he said.

In such circumstances, the KLCI's performance might grind to a halt, he said, adding: "Realistically, there are a lot of uncertainties that global investors are grappling with."

Lai advised inventors who wished to go into the market now to "not chase stocks."

"Go into more liquid counters, such as blue-chip firms, which will allow you to exit when you have to, and maybe mid-cap companies which are resource-based."

Credit Suisse country head and head of research Stephen Hagger took a long-term view on the KLCI. "We remain positive on the performance of the local bourse, which is supported by solid pre-election pump-priming measures."

He said the robust growth of plantation-related companies, thanks to firm crude palm oil prices, and continued restructuring of government-linked companies would sustain the market's performance in the longer run.

"The rest of the world looks pretty nasty right now but Malaysia seems all right. It remains our top pick in the region," Hagger said.

Meanwhile, in line with the bullish market trend yesterday, the ringgit climbed to 3.2655 against the US dollar - a fresh 10-year high following buoyant demand for the local unit.

Dealers said the ringgit would remain on an upward momentum, given the weakening greenback and

Tebrau Teguh (BUY/ RM1.31/ Target Price: RM5.00)
In talks with MRCB?
We understand that in an on-going conference in Singapore, Malaysian Resources Corporation (MRCB) has openly stated that they are currently in talks with Tebrau Teguh.

Tebrau Teguh (42% owned by Kumpulan Prasarana Rakyat Johor, Johor's state government development arm) owns the largest undeveloped landbank (1,012 acres) within a 5km radius from Johor Bahru city centre.

MRCB is the contractor for the RM1b Eastern Dispersal Link (EDL) which will connect the North South Expressway to Tebrau, Johor Bahru City Centre and Nusajaya. The EDL will improve accessibility in South Johor and boost surrounding land values, with Tebrau Teguh being the prime beneficiary.

Tebrau Teguh has the strongest RNAV upgrade potential in the sector as commercial land in Johor Bahru city centre have been transacted at RM110psf vs its current book value of just RM13.40psf. At RM110psf, Tebrau Teguh's RNAV is RM7.06.

Maintain BUY.

There has been speculation about the 10% drop correction and also a possible earlier than expected rate cut by 50 basis point. Of course, this only affect HK cos its the only one following Fed rate for Fed funds. HSI rallied that day caused by the possilibity of the 10% correction but it appears that the market as a whole didnt really goes well with it, plus Goldman issued a recession warning and GOLDMAN is highly rated by American and all around the world. Japan is one of the biggest exporter to Japan, so any negative news will send Nikkei tumbling. Taiwan is more affected by NASDAQ than DJIA/Nikkei/FTSE.

I dont think its wise to take China as a comparison. China itself will still expand quite rapidly albeit lower than expected even if US tumble into recession. I think its one of the reason why China has started to cool itself down so that it wont burst all of a sudden if things turn for worse in US. Just an example, China already started to reduce 10% output for steel product by shutting down inferior steel mills this year. Thats what send steel price rocketing lately. Not only that, they even impose a 15% export duty this year as compared to a 7% rebate for steel export last year. If China prepare for the worse, I think we should too.

do you guys notice that the entire regions are not following US Dow Jones anymore  unsure.gif

US up 146 points last night, look at today's market, almost all regions closed in red except Shanghai...
*
Yup, may be due to a lot of foregin fund were already existing the Asian regional, (pull back to rescue on their own backyard) biggrin.gif
So it is now more or less depends on local and regional participant funds to move the their market.

But having said that, it won't decoupling too long as if US economy does run into trouble (recession), asian economy will be hurt also, just matter of degree, won't totally spare from it.

Market is far from totally trouble free. Just locally pre-Ge and pre-cny overwrite all the bad news currently. Market and economy still need time to slowly cure itself, not quick fix.

Not overly too bullish (people may get too excited about the GE) or bearish about currently market condition is more appropriate approach and don't be too greedy. Historically KLSE tends to do very well in the beginning of year and sometimes did peak at the 1Q.

Market has been up too fast recently, any pullback won't be surprise. There is no economical fundamental changes on the economy side, just rally on momemtum to ride on recently.

It is nothing to do with SC but KLSE. First in first out or the lowest price.

though KLCI break record, most stocks have not reached thier highs of last year.

most of the index points are contributed only by few stocks, namely Maybank , Sime, Bursa, commerz. They should give other stocks a chance to run up too.

Hey different lah, Unisem got share split (having said that after adjusted for share split, it still way below its 22 high)while MRCB didn't (no or peanut dividend also). Also Unisem reached 22 when dotcom bubble during 1999-2000 which almost every dotcom stock was trading at insane PE value 30x,50x etc 70x.

That's why one needs to assess when market or individual stock is too high to sustain itself. If bought too expensive, one will be trapped for long long time, not to mention the interest loss on FD (if put the money into FD rather than buying stocks). That's why I said this is KLCI bull but not entire market bull as a lot of people still being 'trapped'.
In a real super bull, almost everyone is making money, not sectorial type.

MRCB is highly political type of stock which sometimes not suit to long term investment, it is more appropriate for short term speculation based on theme play

CNOOC is mainly upstream crude oil, while SINOPEC and PETROCHINA are downstream refiners. China is fixing the price of products from the refiners while upstream crude oil is still climbing according to market, so SINOPEC and PETROCHINA stand to lose more unless China increase the price of petrol again.

Not fresh at all...

Initially Wall Street expect Citi to write down 11billion and Merrill 7billion.
But now they said it might be more than expected cos new CEO want to get rid of all the writedown and start fresh this year.
Thus Goldman raise Citi writedown to 18billion from 11billion and now Merrill got dragged into the same thing.
Not surprising but what surprise me is that BOA buying CountryWide seem like a good news to investor cos they thought it must have reach bottom if it attract BOA interest. Too optimistic again IMO...

Those CWs fundamental are tight to their respective mothershare, if mothershares tumble (like yesterday DJ plunge 250 points and Apple dropped 3%), there is no way they can 'goreng' it or they won't choose it to 'goreng' either. If mothershare tumble and you try to 'goreng' its CWs, basically you are looking for trouble or generous enough to give 'free' money to others.

You need market condition to be right to have a 'goreng', no one can 'fight' against the market force or direction.

Just like recent, they have good excuse to 'goreng' some political stocks like MRCB because of GE, so there are people chasing after which make their 'goreng' much easier.

Overseas market most have some hard time recently, until the bearish sentiment clear up, foreign CWs need to wait more time. (But time is one of the biggest enemy of CWs).

Just my 2 cents. Don't mean CWs or foreign CWs won't be 'goreng'.

KLCI shoots past 1,500 points

PETALING JAYA: The KL Composite Index (KLCI) marched to a fresh high of 1,521.6 points yesterday as talk of impending general elections gained momentum and foreign funds flowed strongly into the local bourse.

The rising tide of foreign funds also propelled the benchmark to break the critical psychological resistance at 1,500 points after five consecutive record-breaking days.

The sharp appreciation of the ringgit against the US dollar pointed to the return of foreign funds to the local bourse. The local currency strengthened to a 10-year high of 3.259 to the dollar yesterday.

Profit taking, however, caused the KLCI to pull back from its intra-day peak and finish at 1,516, up 24.6 points, or 1.6%, compared with Wednesday.

The bullish sentiment stemmed mainly from domestic factors, given the lingering external uncertainties such as a possible slowdown in the US and world economies.

The regional bourses were mostly down yesterday.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index dipped 364 points, or 1.3%, to 26,867, Singapore's Straits Times Index dropped 23.7 points, or 0.72%, to 3,287, while South Korea's Kospi Index shed 42.5 points, or 2.3%, to 1,1782.

"The current buoyant stock market is largely driven by momentum trades on the back of expectation of an early election,'' Citi Investment Research said in its strategy report yesterday. "The biggest risk is an election that is too early, which may bring an early end to that buoyancy."

The research unit has raised its 12-month target for the KLCI to 1,570 points from 1,542. The new target is only 3.6% off the current level after yesterday's sharp gains.

Citi Investment suggests investors sell cyclical stocks such as construction and property on strength, given that the expected moderation in domestic consumption growth would be the key risks to earnings.

JP Morgan executive director and head of broking, Clement Chew, said Bursa Malaysia looked appealing to foreign investors because the country's relatively more diversified and broad-based economy would help mitigate any adverse impact of external shocks.

"The market is also under-owned by foreigners," he said.

The strengthening ringgit was also a draw for foreign interest. "Investors are always more comfortable with a strengthening currency,'' Chew said.

He said the local bourse consolidated in the second half last year and that made Malaysian stocks attractive in terms of growth, dividend yield, price/earnings ratio and return on equity, compared with regional counters.

Yesterday's buying interest was not confined to plantation stocks, which had been the star performers in recent weeks.

Banking stocks also led yesterday's rally after Citi said it anticipated banks and stockbrokers to be the next area of focus after a strong run in the plantation and telecommunications sectors.

"We also expect the oil and gas sector to draw interest," it said.

Heavyweights Malayan Banking Bhd gained 30 sen to RM12.80, Bumiputra-Commerce Holdings Bhd surged 70 sen to RM11.70 while AMMB Holdings Bhd was up 36 sen at RM4.04.

Sime Darby Bhd and DiGi.Com Bhd also lent support to the KLCI, with Sime Darby putting on 50 sen to RM13.30 and DiGi.Com jumping RM1.40 to RM26.

Kurnia Insurans Bhd chief investment officer Pankaj Kumar said that earnings visibility and their growth in the mid-teens were the magnets for investors' money.

He does not foresee any drastic correction in the near term.

"The market may need to take breather, but the momentum is strong enough to sustain the rally, at least until the Chinese New Year," Pankaj said.

KLCI uptrend constructive

ALLOW me to recapitulate what was written on April 10, last year. When Bursa Malaysia's principal indicator, the KL Composite Index (KLCI) surged to a 13-year high and marched steadily towards the pervious "super bull" rally intra-day peak of 1,332.04, established on Jan 5, 1994, StarBiz published a commentary titled Within striking distance, with the sub-head KLCI looks poised to beat the all-time high set in 1994.

The article was supported by analyses of the historical daily bar chart, including mathematical calculations of the previous cycle of major run-ups, concluding that the key index had an upside of at least 1,520 points, going forward. Apparently, we were the earliest, if not the first to come out with such a forecast and the feedback from our regular readers then was very much divided.

Nonetheless, exactly nine months and one day later, we finally saw the benchmark CI breaching the "magical" 1,500-point psychological level with ease to achieve a high of 1,521.56 during intra-day session, also the best ever in Bursa's history before trimming advances to finish at 1,516.22 in the wake of mild profit-taking activity in the afternoon session yesterday.

It has been a long road not without a couple of obvious heart-pumping moments, brought about by yen-carry-trade worries and subprime mortgage woes in the US last year, where the market was nearly beaten to a pulp amid waning investor confidence.

Fortunately, the local bourse was able to absorb the selling pressure and come out nicely to be where it is today.

On record, Bursa had surpassed our estimate upside objective yesterday and it is appropriate we chart the next pathway, as many eager investors certainly want to know where the market is heading before pouring in more of their hard-earned monies into equities.

Truly, this is a different species of bull. Unlike the "super bull" and "tech fever" runs in 1993 and 1998 respectively, where the market surged across the board, the rally this time around appears highly selective and rotational, driven by the blue chips initially, followed by thematic plays in the construction and property sectors, then spilt over to oil and gas-related issues and thereafter, the plantation companies. Elsewhere, most of the second and third liners, darling among retail players, are however, still stuck or under-performed but they are improving lately.

As we can see, the trend is certainly a friend of the big boys with ample liquidity, snapping up quality stocks before others, perhaps betting Malaysia is in the midst of a long-term structural uptrend following the implementation of a string of economic reforms under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Besides the economic reforms, they too see other powerful catalysts at work, such as the setting up of various economic corridors across the country that would subsequently pave the way for a more sustained growth in the future.

Needless to say, they are proven right, as all the measures undertaken by the Government so far helped the stock market. In fact, we believe there may be more restructuring in the pipeline. Whether it is economic or social measures to be implemented by the authorities in the future to face the rapid globalisation, it will surely bode well for equities, going forward.

Turning to the chart topic, the landscape on the screen is equally promising. Bursa basically received a massive boost from the huge inflow of foreign funds, supported further by the local institutional buying interest, thus driving the principal index deeper into the uncharted zones.

Other than the unexpected sharp drop on the two previous occasions mentioned earlier, any pullbacks along the way due to short-term overbought reason were well absorbed, thanks to smart hands.

In other words, the prevailing mid- and long-term trends of the KLCI are constructive. Together with the strong technical signal, particularly from the daily, weekly and monthly moving average convergence/divergence histograms, they suggest that the window for more upswing is wide open but of greater volatility due to persistent worries about the health of the US economy.

To the upside, the clearest probable target that we can identify is the 1,760-point level, which is the extended resistance line of the upward channel prior to the "super bull" rally in 1993. If the energetic bulls are able to find their way, they will arrive safely at their next destination, earlier than our forecast of last quarter of this year or first half of 2009.

However, investors should take note that technical analysis is about possibility and not certainty, although it is a valuable tool and widely used in stock investing.

As for the downside support, while the key index moves higher and higher into the unknown area, it is always best investors apply a trailing exit to avoid being caught in the event of a sudden reversal.

For now, it is safe, as everything looks well and rosy.

Don't mean CWs or foreign CWs won't be 'goreng'.

well said, i am so agree.

sometimes we just have to follow the market trend,
current trend is pre-GE rally (however market has been rally for 5 days, so, be a little caution) smile.gif

Don't worry, there never was a bull in the first place, just some boosting of the index. Have faith in the pre-GE rally, it will not be affected and KLCI will be pushed up again, although I couldn't say the same for other shares that aren't heavy weights of KLCI.

Not necessary, it depends on company and your postman. I sometimes received 2-3 days after the payment data. But it depends on the company.

Neo, if don't receive in 2 weeks or more time, you should call the company registrar to check or your broking house (if using nominee account)

yup Neo, you should check on it if you don't get it in 2 weeks time, it should be credited la..
sometimes bonus share issue takes one month for me to get, at first i panicked as well, and then got used to it after calling them up and confirming.

basically, just make sure you call them if you dont get it within 2 weeks and let them know, if not they might say why didnt you contact them earlier.

but don't worryla bro, you should get it. nod.gif

Erm..there is one case about these kind of warrants
Last time i encounter one warrant where its actual price for warrants during listing is not 0.005cents.
But more than that coz u need to add costs for warrant rights.
For ex: warrant rights -WR is 0.30cents + another cost to subscribe one warrant -WA

So, u paid more than 0.005cent to own 1 warrant. Just my 2 cents.
Im not sure why during listing, it is less than costs (warrant rights + convertible costs)? Is it applicable to all warrant rights convertible to warrant?

Jordy & dreams_achiever,

Those warrant are free one (detachable warrant). It is given for free at 2 right issue subscribed.

The right issue was issued at 0.50 which you need to buy 2 right issue to get 1 free warrant. The mothershare is at 0.44, so you lose 12 cents on the rights issue but gain back 15 cents, so net gain 3 cents only

Yeah, I noticed the rights issue as well.
They might stand to profit much more in tomorrow's market, if there's any more chasing of DPS-WA then.

DPS-RENOUNCEABLE RIGHTS ISSUE OF 132,000,000 NEW ORDINARY SHARES OF RM0.50 EACH ("RIGHTS SHARES") IN DPS ON THE BASIS OF ONE (1) RIGHTS SHARE FOR EVERY ONE (1) EXISTING ORDINARY SHARE WITH 66,000,000 FREE DETACHABLE WARRANTS ("WARRANTS") ON THE BASIS OF ONE (1) WARRANT FOR EVERY TWO (2) RIGHTS SHARE AT AN ISSUE PRICE OF RM0.50 PER RIGHTS SHARE ("RIGHTS ISSUE")
Actually, im not so sure about above statement.
Is it means that if i own 2 ordinary share then i will entitled 2 right share and 1 warrant automatically?
Then these 2 right share will convertible into 2 ordinary share.
Means in the end, i will have 4 ordinary share + 1 warrant?

Hope can get more clarification from above statement. Thanks in advance.

Yes. But you needs to pay for those 2 right issue shares which cost 0.50, while 1 warrant is given out free (to sweeten the deal, otherwise nobody want to buy those right issue)

It turns up because of IBM as IBM is one of the heaviest component in DJ. It reports a premilinary of result which beat all the market estimate by a signficant margin. (actually partly due to USD falling, as IBM is a international business company so revenue generated outside of US become more due to devaluation of USD).

BM, the world's biggest computer-services provider, rose on results that were boosted by international growth. Apple Inc. climbed after Bank of America Corp. increased its earnings forecast for the maker of the iPod media player. Barrick Gold Corp. and Newmont Mining Corp. advanced as gold reached a record.

QUOTE
IBM gained $8.08 to $105.75. Sales rose to $28.9 billion in the fourth quarter, the Armonk, New York-based company said today in a statement. That topped the $27.7 billion average of analysts' estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Profit from continuing operations climbed to $2.80 a share, also beating projections.

Apple added $4.11 to $176.80. Bank of America said it expects the company to earn $5.04 a share in 2008 and $1.60 a share in the first quarter. That compares to earlier estimates of $4.87 and $1.52 a share, respectively.

Well, if I remember correctly, there would be around 180+ companies announcing their quarterly result this month.
Those familiar faces would be Citigroup, Fannie Mae, Merrill Lynch, UBS, AXA, etc.
These are the only ones I know that would be releasing their quarter result this month in the financial sector.

i think in next 2 days will be good sign after citibank announced theirs results.
JP Morgan not badly affected. Merrill so-so not bad as Citibank.
This thursday Bernanke will give speech. So i think will be good for market if he announce something really good news to all of us.

Merrill initially estimate 7b writedown, now estimate around 12-15b.
Citi initially estimate 11b writedown, now estimate almost 24b.

Currently scenario is a little bit complicated, it is not subprime alone. If it is only subprime, then only banking stocks will be affected, stock market overall won't be too bad.
But now it is much more complicated.

Subprime lead to credit crunch --> prompt Fed to cut rate, inject liquidity --> USD plunging --> Commodities price shoot up --> inflation sky rocket --> Fed shouldn't cut rate --> affect consumers spending power --> housing continue the slump --> affect consumers --> Fed should cut rate --> put more pressure down of USD.

Fed is in the 'box' now, cut or don't cut, both also got impact.

Don't mean overly pesimistic about current market condition, just current situation is a bit tricky, not as simple as cutting rate will solve the problem.
If it is controlled properly with approprate action over the time, then market can stage a run up but it things turns out bad, then market will have some hard time.

HSI-C1-C4 are at very attractive price already especially hsi-c2. Just bought 3000lots of hsi-c2 at 0.06. This one gonna hold it for 2 months and I think can at least earn double.

I believe CNN futures for DJIA is not correct. Since morning, it has been showing +137 unchanged.
Better refer to bloomberg futures indicator.

Good..i also aiming on HSI counter.
But recently, China government did imposed very strict control on HS. For HSI to climb up to above 29K-30K is quite hard compared to end of last year. Hard to play with HK-warrants nowadays... sweat.gif

exactly, the HK-warrants are having too short lifespan

by the time market is recovering, the maturity date is near
and some are even stucked and trapped at high price

Man, you dont often seen FTSE drop more than 2%.
I guess those who bought CW will die horribly tomorrow...

I wonder how our government will support KLCI in events like this. The whole world is collapsing on KLCI. How will they support it??

Update:

I think FTSE is being oversold... down almost 3% with 2 hrs to go...

It seems the most of the counters that drop are those that has been pushed up by the recent rally. So most of other counters still not as badly affected.

Intel also report after the market is closed, it reported both revenue and profit below market concensus. Intel shares plunge more than 10% after the market closed (for after hour trade). Probably will see Intel shares drop from 22 to below 20 for tonight opening.

If im not mistaken, I believe Merrill will announce its financial result on Thursday (tomolo) lor..not tonite.
Tonite, JP Morgan will announce its financial. Expected JP Morgan will announce slightly down than previous year. Not worst compare to Merrill and Citibank. So, tonight possibly DJ wont plunge again.

Actually, IMHO there is 2 bad news and 1 possibly good new on this Thursday.
Bad news:
1)Merrill Lynch financial announcement expected as bad.
2)CPI index data will be out as well as other reports. (very important data/edited: if its data not good).

Good new: 1)FED Bernanke will give speech. If he announce economic stimulus package or cut rate news, market will rally.

So, maybe will buy some to keep until next Monday.

Phew, what an exciting 1st half of KLSE. -44 points or -2.96% of the KLCI which now stands at 1461.

I wonder if the 2nd half will rebound. Most likely will follow the other Asian exchanges, pre-GE rally fellas probably shat in their pants already so will most likely stay out of the 2nd half. Heh! And I thought KLCI will reach 1550. doh.gif

Just joking.

Btw, the reddish of DJ and Nasdaq is largely because of Intel reported dissapointing result after the market close. Tonight, got JPMorgan reporting also CPI numbers.

Nobody can guess it correctly now. Yesterday, people (most analysts) expected Citigroup to report a loss of USD 4-5 billions, it came out 9 billions. It is hard to make estimate on it now. Wait & see.

Intel is one of the DJ 30, that's why it is plunging, as tonight when Intel open 99% will go down.

Are you sure?

From what I read, it started with 101points in the red before rebouding to -40++ when closed. So todays drop is one of the biggest this century.

Next wednesday is Thaipusam and only applicable for some states observing Thaipusam as holiday. No holiday for KL so the Bursa is business as usual but next Friday (1-2-2008), Bursa will be closed due to Federal Territory day smile.gif

moarrrr warrants are coming!!, But not worth your attention.

HSI-c2 Hit lowest at 0.05 and rebound to 0.06. The price is so attractive now. For (long) term investor, this is a good pick. i predict it will go down to 0.04 on friday.

Added on January 16, 2008, 10:18 pmhttp://biz.yahoo.com/ap/080116/apple_ahead_of_the_bell.html?.v=1, probably will boost US market on that day. Just like how Intel boost US market that day.

Is a good news in US... JP MORGAN profit down by 34% but is still profit not like citibank losing money. Their subprime mortgage write down is less than the estimation. rclxms.gif

not sure about US, but next wednesday we will have a public holiday, i suppose KLSE will close, too biggrin.gif

Thaipusam is only holiday for Penang and Selangor, KLSE is in KL, so no holiday.

moarrrr warrants are coming!!, But not worth your attention.

*
Don't look at price alone to determine it is 'cheap'. Also it is not long term, it (HSI-C2) will expire on May 2008, about 4 months old only, not that 'long term'.
FYI, HSI-C1 exercise price is 30,870, today HSI closed at 24,450. So basically it worth nothing at current situation.

Don't mean it won't have upside, judge your own.

Its minus 82.xx when closed.

Right now, its really your bet on which to follows.
If you look across the board, almost the whole world is looking doom but US somehow managed to spark life into its share market.
How long will they remain optismistic???
Mayb tomorrow???
Merrill will smack them right in their face...

Market is unpredictable sometimes, you don't know how it will be, previously when I bought Genting at 6.50 (already sold), at that time, people also said 'fat chance' and said not possible.
*
LOL...

Haiih... sometimes its not destined to be yours la...
I bought IOICORP @ 7.15 and sold @ 6.90.
If I keep until today after 50+ points drop, I still steady le.
Dont look back...

BTW,

Why should Fed cut rates???
I thought they should let the strong survive and the weak perished.
Just like our country back in 97.

I believe it's to stimulate spending and reduce costs of loans to do business and buy stuff. But an interest rate cut will devalue the dollar which would spark inflation at the same time.

An analyst said the sharp drop at yesterday's closing, the single biggest drop in about a year, was due to a combination of steep decline on Wall Street overnight and talks that Malaysia's general elections might be postponed beyond the first quarter of this year.
Seems there is some possibilities that GE will be postponed. Maybe because of Lingam case that causing bad images to Msia government. That's why Badawi wish to postpone until case is end and ppl forget about it.
No wonder yesterday KLCI drop so much. Unable to sustain it.
Wonder how KLCI will perform today?

US concerns dampen KLCI

PETALING JAYA: Stock markets in Asian slumped yesterday as investors backed away from risky investments such as equities amid growing concerns the US economy is moving into a recession.

With the United States still a key market for many export-oriented Asian economies, including Malaysia, a downturn in the world's largest economy would derail worldwide growth, analysts said.

"Asian markets will fall in line with the United States. There is no decoupling of the financial markets,'' Hwang-DBS Investment Management chief investment officer David Ng told Bloomberg yesterday.

Sharp triple-digit losses on Wall Street overnight set the bearish tone for Asian market trading yesterday.

"Weak US retail sales figures and disappointing results from Citigroup Inc exacerbated investors' pessimistic mood,'' OSK Investment Bank wrote in its morning note to clients yesterday.

And, by the end of trading across Asia yesterday, that pessimism was apparent.

The KL Composite Index (KLCI) plunged 52.05 points, or 3.5%, to close at 1,453.66. The benchmark index has fallen for three consecutive days from a record high.

Only four of the 100 KLCI component stocks ended higher, with heavyweights Sime Darby Bhd, Bumiputra-Commerce Holdings Bhd, Telekom Malaysia Bhd and Tenaga Nasional Bhd all posting double-digit losses.

On the whole, declining stocks outnumbered risers by 824 to 100 on volume of 1.17 billion shares worth RM2.84bil.

Elsewhere, the Hong Kong bourse was the worst hit yesterday, with the Hang Seng Index plunging 5.4% to 24,450 points. It was the index's biggest single-day drop since Sept 11, 2001.

In Singapore, the Straits Times Industrial index fell 3% to 3,058 points.

The two indices have plummeted more than 20% from their respective peaks reached in October last year.

Japan's Nikkei 225 dived 3.4% to 13,504 points, while South Korea's main KOSPI index retreated 2.4% to 1,704 points, and the Australian S&P ASX 200 index fell 2.5% to 5,809 points.

China's Shanghai and Shenzhen bourses, which were largely driven by domestic investors, lost more than 2.4% each yesterday.

The turmoil in the US subprime mortgage market had already curbed investors' appetite for risky bets and growing worries that the world's largest economy was slipping into recession would cap the upside potential for stocks in the near term, analysts said.

At yesterday's close, most Asian stock markets were down for the year, except for Bursa (+0.6%) and the Shanghai and Shenzhen bourses.

Meanwhile, crude oil futures in New York fell to just above US$90 a barrel yesterday from US$99 at the start of the year.

Gold was traded at below US$890 an ounce, down from a high of US$914 on Monday.

I personally think this correction will reach 1350-1370 level before it bounces back (based on the last 2 major corrections and the support line). Of course there will be some pullbacks in between.

However if it drops below 1350, then it's really a doomsday...
