There are a lot of Scams going on in the internet and via phone calls.
Many people are aware and been taught not to give out OTP in any occurrences.

But if Customer Service staff from legit telco line asking for OTP to verify customer's validity, whether to giver or not to give out OTP?
Is this wrong protocol or staff corrupted?

The only OTP that you can give is when you go to any telco service center(cd,um,tmpoint etc) and the staff request for your OTP to proceed with your issues.
Other than that, nope.

No one can get OTP, even if staff.
Normally it's like credit card pin, if need then best practice is let owner type it in.

.
Since last month, to log-in to MyUMobile app, requires OTP = a 6 digit number. Should be similar to your case.

AFAIK, as long as we are not using Auto-debit for our Postpaid account and logged-in to the MyUMobile app or logged-in to our online bank account or e-Wallet or online shop or other online financial services, giving our OTP is OK, eg for customer verification like 2FA/OTP may be required to log-in to Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, etc.

We only need to be careful with OTP for online financial transactions, ie not for online ID verification like for PADU KYC. Hackers can use SIM Swap to secretly steal your OTPs for online financial transactions.

Personally I would say go visit a branch physically for peace of mind

Normally CS won't ask for OTP.
Normally they ask for IC to confirm.
Last time sign up OctoSavers thru online.
Did first payment, I ignored the call then got blocked.
Call CS to verify then ask for IC then confirm is genuine user.

From my understanding, you called UM CS and CS asked OTP, right? What's wrong to just give OTP to them, you are the one calling them. bangwall.gif
With the OTP they can skipped to ask more private questions for your identify verification. Btw, Maxis also do that.

At service centre face to face still acceptable. At least you can look at their screen to make sure no hanky panky going on.

I think due to privacy, they need to key in the OTP sent to you to access more private details and to make sure nobody but the number owner authorised the transaction. In their system might can terminate your line if you asked to. Later any agent can terminate your contacted line. Who want to pay that early termination fee?

Asking for OTP via phone is definitely a scam.
If this is UM practice i bet their cybersecurity is lousy to none …

You can be billed with alot of purchases like game credits by giving out OTP.

The caller id you see can be spoofed easily, it is a 90s tech already can achieve that …
