None in Malaysia yet, you may be able to get one a bit sooner if you live in Singapore, otherwise you'll just have to wait.

Make sure you're getting it from an authorized Apple dealer, otherwise you'll be screwed come warranty time.

I don't trust most of the retailers in LYP all that much biggrin.gif

I wonder why Apple Malaysia doesn't lower the price. Apple Singapore drops the price of the newly updated Macbook. I bought my Macbook under the Education Discount. Previously it was priced S$2087, now it is only S$2048 (around RM4717). Not too bad rite? Price without Education Discount is S$2188.

I bought it through apple.com.sg. you can only get education discount when you purchase online.

If you don't really need a lappie at the moment, you might want to wait for probably a few months before you get your Mac. I think Leopard is still not stable. Just now my Safari closed unexpectedly AGAIN....so as my aMSN and iTune. ohmy.gif ohmy.gif And just now the dock disappear to nowhere. I have to move the cursor and click click the lower part baru it appeared again. shakehead.gif Sometimes the response is also quite slow...despite the fact that this is latest update with new graphic card.

Usually the cycle Apple updates their Macbook line is around 200 days. I think the design will only come out around 6 to 7 months later. ohmy.gif

The delivery is restricted to Singapore address only. The delivery is free of charge though...and they will send it to you within 24 hours.
I was in lecture when the guy called me and asked where's my block. I told him to put it in the residence reception counter. After finish lecture I quickly rush back to retrieve it. tongue.gif
No. You don't need a student card to enjoy the education discount. They don't even require you to key in your student card number or what so ever. Even aunty uncle also can enjoy this discount. rclxms.gif

But you need to agree that you are a student though (by clicking the 'I Agree' button before proceeding). I think they can do something to you if you abuse it.

I don't think they will find out. Once you placed your order, they will send you an email telling you that your order is being processed. After that, they will inform you your item is shipped or what. During that time, the item is already passed to their appointed carrier, which in this case, is a carrier codenamed XBAX in Singapore. Even if Apple find out you are not a student, you can always say you buy it to someone else smaller that you who still attends school. LOL. icon_rolleyes.gif

Remember reading somewhere OSX that comes together with the Mac is meant for that particular Mac model (Macbook, MBP etc) only, perhaps that's the reason it's a different build. hmm.gif

I went to EpiCentre in Pavillion but they don't have it yet. I thought they're the premium resellers? They can't even tell me when they will be available.

On the plus side, the shop looks real nice and there's tons of machine to play around with, and the sales guys are pretty friendly too.

Ohh..too bad then..if that is indeed the price for new MB then im gonna buy one. Its 200MYR reduce than previous one.

The new MB in Aussie here is 1599AUD which translate to 1600x3 = 4800MYR. The current exchange rate is slightly more than RM3 i think.

So if the new MB in malaysia is indeed 3999 then its RM800 cheaper than OZ. Can someone confirm the price for the new MB here?

I thought all new 2.2ghz Santa Rosa platform comes with the new X1300 card?

How can the new 2.2ghz one still have GMA950 chipset installed? Unless you mean they are clearing the 2.16ghz ones..

Edit:
applemalaysia's website sucks sleep.gif

Look at the MB section. The upper portion says "with speeds revving up to 2.16ghz" and at the bottom of the page (at the 'Macbook at a glance' part), it has the latest spec. Don't know which one to believe tongue.gif

luige,

1. Your MB comes with intel GMA 950 or Intel X3100? The "A" revision or 'B" revision?

Btw, I got a hunch that those MB that's going to be sold in PC fair will be the old ones. Just to clear stock you know? But I'll still go and check it out.

Do you think I should wait for the PC Fair? I've been out of the pc/notebook buying business for too long now.

Last time I check, the deal doesn't differ that much from the standard LowYat offering.

I do know they offer free stuff and all, so I'm just wondering, what kinda stuff can I expect here?

Thanks! smile.gif

I do check apple.sg but they still sell old macbook in the webside.. any ideal?

just came back from CG Computer (Switch) Sunway Carnival, i learned from stuff there new MacBook pricing is Rm 3999 for base model, Rm 4759 superdrive + white and black model RM 5459. These price applicable for Cash and Credit Card purchase, but CC purchase need to add 4.5% tax.

New macbook using intel X3100 instead of GMA 950. The older stock sell starting at RM 4199 but comes with RM 400 ++ diskaun on accesorries or another apple product.

It's the 'bank' tax actually. In a way, it's good that we can better deals if we were to pay cash, but the idea of walking around with 8000 bucks in your pocket surely does sound scary.

What model are you planning to get anyways? I'm planning to get mine next week. Maybe we can 'gang' up and push for better deals? biggrin.gif

The previous GMA950 is Intel's production while the new X1300 is by ATI.

Then it becomes a Powerbook if you do that. What's differentiating the Macbook from the Macbook Pro is the dedicated graphic card.

What's stopping you from going Pro if you really want the dedicated card? Everything comes with a price, nothing is free.

Main reason is Gaming. Apart of that, 3D rendering la, Video Editing la, photoshop and those 2D application will have slightly better performance due to no shared memory wink.gif Hope you get a good idea.. If your main focus is 2D application, then macbook is good enough for you.

The GPU is used by Apple's Core Image eg. Final Cut, Motion, real time HD effects. The dedicated GPUs provide much better performance than the Intel integrated graphics.

But ya, I will wait too if possible. January, the rumored date for the new subnotebook is not far off. However, expect the price to be a low end MBP price, it won't be Macbook level pricing. I would guess that it will start at the black Macbook price (US$1500) with lower specs, but significantly smaller/thinner.

btw, the price surely not same but rather expensive. tongue.gif I will expect the price similar to MBP or slightly less. But the spec is lower than MB. probably using Pentium M, most ultra-portable laptop using Pentium M with 1.2-1.6Ghz. whistling.gif

if i am not mistaken, the current mabcook is 13.3inches in screen size, the rumoured one reportedly being the same in size.unless Apple decided to start off an ultra portable line, then its a different story already.

and i think Apple wont be playing dumb to the Asus Eee pc which is small and useful yet still keeping the price low, many would say what could a 4gb or 8gb do,but 4gb or 8gb is more than enough for ultra portable users.so,my bet is a slimmer Macbook with 13.3 or maybe 14.1inches screen size while staying away from the price point of MBPs icon_rolleyes.gif and Apple will have a winner again thumbup.gif

my guess would be priced around 5k as a typical macbook..`
which is going to be a hard sell as asus eee pc though being only 7" it's priced much more competitively..`

unless someone willing to pour in rm4k just for the favour of getting a 13" .. than the 7" for ultra portable purposes where 13" is defying the point of being a truly "Ultra" portable..

Nope.

If apple "happen" to introduce new category under macbook family, it should be under ultra portable. And ultra portable would be the size of 12.1" or smaller. 13.3" does not really count as "ultra", probably just portable. Btw, i doubt it will be 14.1". I rather get MBP instead whistling.gif

I dont mind 'ultraportable' at 13.3". But the tablet must weight no more than 1.5kg and the lcd must almost fully occupy all the screen part, leaving only a little bezel. For now, 2.27kg for MB is not bad, but considering i want to bring the notebook with me to uni, its get heavier by the time finish class. Lol

and I would like to make a portable as well ,
I like to doing my iweb while in the cafe shop which have a wifi on them
or video editing while on my vacation

I'm getting a santa rosa macbook 2.2ghz (maybe)

A Macbook would perfectly handle that load of work. I would recommend you to at least upgrade your RAM to 2GB though.

A Macbook is more portable than a MBP. Just get a sleeve for protection and you're good to go.

Yes it would run smoothly. But you will feel the toil on your MB if you multitask heavily.

One guy told me that getting 2x1GB RAM sticks are only RM100 each, thus making the upgrade RM200 only.

I heard the RAM is not tat cheep ..
I ask the apple reseller shop , they told me the normal ram will not fit in apple computer , because the normal ram is KVR and apple ram is KTA

and they told me 1GB ram is RM350

2X1GB will be RM700

if there is RM200 , i will sure upgrade it without hesitate

Don't buy it from Apple of course. Those guys are bullshitting you. A lot of people here bought theirs from non Apple resellers and are working fine on their machines.

Go to those normal hardware shops, and get MB specific ones. Those are cheap, only RM100 per 1GB stick.

Let me search for you what type you should buy.

Added on November 15, 2007, 12:15 pmOk, here is the RAM specifics from Apple's site and a guide on how to install it your ownself as well:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303721

Further read, it might be for the old MB black but still a good read:

All these are isolated case. You can't expect Apple to be perfect as well.

But one thing good is, if there is any problem during the 1 year warranty period, Apple will do everything to make sure your machine works fine. Even if it means changing the whole machine to a new one.

Not really sure on that cause I never used iWeb/iMovie before.

But it shouldn't lag. Apple won't be dumb enough to build a machine that is not compatible with their software.

Upgrade RAM la, should be safe if you do that.

I've been using iMovie for years, since they first started it ~2000 and have been using it very extensively on my Intel Macs (Mini and Macbook) since last year. It's really not GPU intensive at all, it doesn't require much on the graphics side, it's a lot more intensive on the hard disk and CPU side. There's no lagging, don't worry be happy biggrin.gif

yea..

Btw, i use like 4-5 days now. Never have such problem, the only problem i have is bootcamp. WHen I try enable "smoke" effect in Pro Street demo. It hang and kena BSOD. XD laugh.gif Well, that probably the x3100 driver fault.

A reputable seller. They sell cheap RAM for Macs. The killer is shipping though! If you can, maybe you should organize a bulk of some kind so that shipping can be shared. I would be interested smile.gif

It's not Apple specific RAM, it's PC RAM.

Buy PC RAM SO-DIMM DDR2-667 (PC-5300) and it'll work. You don't have to buy Apple specific RAM.

I just received my RAM from them. Pretty fast really. kwekeugene, you missed me by a few days. biggrin.gif

You should order from them only if you're getting 4GB. If you're getting 2x1GB, I think it's way cheaper for you to get someone from Semenanjung to send it over to you. Good luck!

Unfortunately, that's how it works. There'll be a copy under iPhoto library. There's a tips at macosxhints on how to move the library to another folder. Maybe that can help you with the space issue.

Need to buy a laptop soon.
Still debating if PC or Macbook.
Newbie with Mac here...
So can Macbook do MSN messaging (video call) and Skype.. no problem right?
I will be also doing some HD video editing, any problem?
A lot of learning curve if start using macbook...Is it worth it

One newbie question. if the macbook can run window OS. Do you think if i buy any new PC laptop, i can dual boot with Mac OS Leopard?

Bolded got problem. Current msn only chatting.. Unless you boot to winxp via bootcamp. And HD video? Yes, mac can. But probably macbook alone can barely handle that heavy task. Macbook pro surely no problem wink.gif

And your last newbies question, it is illegal to do so. Technically, it is possible. My desktop running Leopard btw.. whistling.gif

just import the pics into iphoto... then delete the originals... iphoto sorts it for you into folders...

personally i am not an iphoto fan...dunno if my steps are correct.. the concept should be the same as itunes... import and delete the original...

MSN messenger video call not sure... am using Adium... no webcam support yet i think...
HD video editing should be no biggie...maybe you should get an external HD for capturing as the notebook HDDs are quite small in size...

i have helped my friend who works in advertising field as a DTP artist on getting and setting up his new MacBook.. upgraded to 2 gigs... he was quite happy with it... he normally does freelance jobs on those big banners that might end up with AI files close to 1 gig... of course it is not comparable with the MacBook Pro...but the performance difference is considered not too big given the huge price difference... you'll have to judge and weigh the performance factor and the price factor for what you can afford... just my opinion...

aMSN supports video call (though I haven't really tried that out yet), personal message as well as nudge. But I now use Adium because it is more stable and faster. Previously my aMSN quit unexpectedly like shit.
The bad thing about Adium is that you can't see other people's personal message.

Newbie questions
Can you bootcamp with Leopard and Vista home premium... or it is only WinXP...?
And can macbook handle my AVC (H.264) video files from my HD videocam?

Can you upgrade the ram easily yourself or is it better to let..someone else do it?
How much more to upgrade to 2gb. cheapest option?

1) yea.. it support Vista as well.

2) Hmm, i think the newer revision can, santa rosa macbook. So far so good, I play hd video(1280x700 resolution) smoothly in my mb.

3) yea.. It is quite easy, just few un-screw, then good to go. But it is wiser to let the apple staff do the job wink.gif

noob question about this wireless thingy.. IEEE 802.11n

i know that macbook supports the better 802.11n.. it's supposed to be faster than 'b' and 'g' standard (whatever that is)

but what if my isp only based on 'b' and 'g' standard only? i'm currently using "deconnexion" http://www.danawa.net.my/

so if i buy a macbook, the 'n' standard would become a waste huh? since the isp only supports b and g. so the airport thing is rendered useless.. eh? i dunno about this stuffs.

B=11MB, G=54MB, N=300MB. Our ISP fastest speed for home user is 4MB. So, whatever standards you opt for is still overkill for the internet connection(ISP to your House speed). BUT, we need higher speed to do local networking. Like transfer huge files between your home network, HD streaming, audio streaming and stuff like that.

Apart of the speed, the main different is the range. N or currently only draft-N can have a larger coverage compare to A/B/G. Nowadays no body use A. A is 54MB as well but the big downside is the frequency which is 5Ghz. The high the frequency, the lower the coverage will be. So no one use A. Most ppl use G. Technically, N/Draft-N is said to be faster and yet larger coverage. But the end result didn't achieve that much. The finalize N will be expected in late 2008.

Read more at here. There is many differences if you into deeper in networking.

Yea.. But only draft-N, not N. Got a very big different if you into networking.

Technology works this way. When there got "old" technology and "new" technology trying to work/connect together. It will use the "old" technology instead of new 1. This is because mostly "new" technology have the backward compatibility.

In other words, for your situation, it will use WIFI-g instead of draft-N (to be precise). The speed will have difference if your notebook or whatever is draft-N and your router is draft-N also. If one of them is WIFI-g, then it willl use the WIFI-g instead wink.gif

am getting a mac book real soon, probably after or during pc fair, but am not too sure about booting another windows or not.

and i heard about the rams warranty, how true is that the only warranty that will be void is the rams' warranty if we change it ourselves.

for occasional gaming purposes, should i boot another windows or will it lag? If I play certain games which are not mac compatible?

I just bought a 2G Kingston Value RAM from the PC Show here in Singapore. S$69. Dunno it's considered cheap or expensive.

Was struggling whether should get 2 sticks of 1G or just one stick of 2G because the price of 1G RAM is rather lucrative @ S$30. But later decided that 2G stick would be a better investment as I can still expand my RAM to 4G without wasting any sticks.

Now the problem arises: I don't know how to change the RAM.

I saw a promoter changed the RAM of a Macbook just now but am too afraid to try it myself. What is the consequence if the RAM is not installed properly?

1. Install windows if you need to. Hard disk space tend to be scarce on the Macbook, I don't have Windows on mine.
2. You could give a call to Apple Malaysia and ask them personally. I think you can search the net for the official Apple statement regarding "user replaceable RAM". I don't have the link currently, so google yea...
3. For intensive games, you would need to boot into windows. You get better performance but do keep in mind it is still onboard graphics. It is by no means a serious gaming machine.

Head over to Apple's website. There will be a PDF download where they will guide you on the steps on replacing RAM on your Macbook.

If you are uncomfortable with the idea of installing it yourself, you can bring your RAM and your Macbook to any Mac retailer. A small fee may incur for installation.

Replacing RAM is a relatively simple process. No harm would be done if you didn't install it correctly. Your Macbook will fail to boot. Just make sure the RAM is securely in place, and it would boot up normally.

*
1) dota or WC3 now got UB version and it support in mac. so just get mac version of wc3. Btw, if you buy the latest revision mb, the integrated graphic is more powerful than the older revision. I can play pro street with good fps in my mb. wink.gif

2) yea.. can run ms office, but it is mac version. Or you can use open office which is open-source and free. Rosetta is PPC emulation. This is because of intel processor. Intel processor only understand the intel code, so this emulation does is to emulate PPC code reader. wink.gif

if you mis-install the RAM, your MacBook will not boot up. also, i doubt you can get the metal cover back in.

I would ask you to drop by my office in 1 Utama, Petaling Jaya, but you're in Kuching? tongue.gif

I read and watched the installation video just now. Seems like it's not that hard to install the RAM. But what bugs me is that whether the RAM I purchased will cause problem to my MB or not. I bought Kingston Value RAM but there are some reports saying that their MBs became unstable and will reboot unexpectedly after they installed the RAM. I am quite worried this will happen to me... sad.gif

Oh...that's very kind of you for offering to help me install. But I am currently in Singapore and will be going back to Kuching soon. laugh.gif

If that happens, though I highly doubt so, you can remove the RAM and put in the original RAM.

Then sell off the RAM here in Lowyat. smile.gif

The incompatibility mostly happen to the PowerPC architectures. The Intel ones are using the standard Intel platform, so you shouldn't face any of the problems mentioned, unless you get a lemon RAM.

Make sure you run the memtest once you've installed the RAM, it will take forever, but you only have to do it once. Good luck.

I've just installed the 2G RAM I bought yesterday. So far so good. Boot up time is same as before....

Am now running Rember to test it. Hopefully everything is ok. :-)

Added on December 2, 2007, 3:44 amJust finished running the tests by Rember and Apple Hardware Test. No error detected. So I suppose I don't have to worry about Kernel Panic or random restart?

I tried to run many applications to test the system. No lagging at all. smile.gif

I can also switch between spaces smoothly.

All in all, I am quite pleased with the performance of my MB now. And I hope the newly installed RAM won't cause any problem in the future.

my sanyo HD1000 video cam, record in full HD 1080i resolutions in mp4 format.
can macbook or macbook pro view and edit (iMovie) in full hd mp4 format?
If cannot, have to convert to other format, i guess will loose some resolutions..right?

Can macbook do the simple video editing jobs,... or do i need MBP .... significantly more cost...

I use Kingston Value RAM as recommended by other forumers. biggrin.gif

It's S$69 per stick.

I run Rember again and quit all the applications including Finder. But damn, now my shortcut keys are no longer working.
I can't adjust the brightness using F1 and F2 keys, the media keys are also not working.
Any idea how can I restore the functions?

Oh well, I heard about the latest promotion, which is that they will give away a free Targus bagpack. Don't know worth it or not, but I'm not too sure whether will there be more promotions during the PC Fair.

They're regular USB devices and will work with Windows, OSX, Linux, Solaris etc. I've used the Mighty Mouse on Windows and have used various USB mice on OSX without problems.

kate,

For us to help you, you have to provide us more information. For example,

(1) How much RAM do you have?
(2) What programs do you run?
(3) Elaborate more on "easily lag". When does it lag? How long is this lag?

the easiest way is check the integrated graphic, if it is X3100, then it is santa rosa. Or you can check the processor. Santa Rosa processor is 800MHz FSB

Hi, I would like to know whether the APP covers in certain regions or is it globally protected, like international warranty or something? I got mine in the UK and hopefully it'll work in Malaysia too. Oh another question is, how do you uninstall windows xp? Can we do it just with merging the partition and everything back to Mac? Is it that easy?

lag as in spinning beach ball?

is other apps still active when this happens? if yes, maybe you can open up the Activity Monitor from your <system drive> \ applications \ utilities when you run the problematic apps. try to show all processes when you run activity monitor, so when it happens you can see which processor is taking all your processing cycles or you might find that you have abnormal ram usage or disk activity...

How do you guys use your notebook? As in how to manage the battery? Or you guys just plug in the power cable 24/7 with the battery in. I heard there may be some problems if I overcharge it. How true is that?

Apple has a page with battery tips. Google for it.

One good suggestion I've read elsewhere is to buy a laptop cooler for your desk when you have it plugged in.

actually those protector films are quite hard to stick it on the MacBook... it took me more than 2 hours to do so.

rx330: I highly suggest you get your facts right before coming in here to thrust all your anger at meaningless arguments.

The black MB does still come with an extra 40GB of HD space as compared to the mid range counterpart. Unless you have evidence which says otherwise.

No you can't. And there's no retail store in Malaysia. Only Apple premium reseller. You can however use the education price on the online store. Too bad the white MacBooks are discontinued.

There wouldn't be any problems purchasing Mac items from the garage sales right? As I know, the warranty can be claimed from any Mac retail outlets. Am I right?
