cry.gif Won... Kero so small size, ask your sister close one eye lor. So heartache hear the GR's story. I think even if the vet didn't neuter the dog, the owner also won't want him back. It's just an excuse from irresponsible owners. Although I have two monsters now, my dad always say he don't mind to rescue another furkid when the situation arises. Keep us updated, ok Won? Aii... so cham the poor GR. You know his name ma?
OT : Hahahaha, no need cough la. I also buy VIP tickets to watch mine la, hehehe. If you like the artist enough, no need paiseh that you spend $$ to get the VIP ticket. Hahahahaha.... of course  sweat.gif later have to tighten the belt lor. You gonna watch 1 or 2 or 3 shows? (not necessarily all nites VIP ma, heh)
Elaine hor, the kid in the pic is a malay kid ar? Queenie baby soooo big edi. laugh.gif
*
Yalor, the GR has such sad fate that's why hope to adopt him and give him a better life (spoilt n pampering tongue.gif )
Anyway, good news! Yesterday I went to the vet there again to visit the GR and he told me the dog has been booked by someone already. smile.gif
Once his stitches can be removed and heal completely, the new owner can take him home.

p/s: No name yet coz the vet will let the new owner named the dog.

she love to eat cat's/ dog's shit when walking her around.. told her not to eat still wanna eat... rclxub.gif

then keep bully the others dog who is smaller then her..  rclxub.gif
*
Hmmm, I would say my shushu is very smart dog, but at the same time he is has a mind of his own and can be quite stubborn.
This observation is made comparing with my previous dogs (spitz, mongrel).
Shushu learns his trick very fast and when you play with him, he can be very devious (try lots of method to steal his treats away).Though he learn his trick fast, whether he will listen to your command later (especially training time) is another problem. rclxub.gif I think probably your GR is not stupid but just stuborn. The trick is to find what object that motivate them most and use it - then you will see another side of your GRs. Good Luck!

I will not be free during march due to work commitments. Let me know when is the gathering and I see whether I can make it or not.

Here are some photos of shushu parading his cny t-shirt:

Recently, shushu ran out and got bitten quite badly by a stray dog. His left ears is torn and one of the main blood vessel was broken.
The vet has to give him anesthetic before stitching his ear back as he would not calm down.
Here are some pictures taken at the vet: (warning: blood)
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

His ear is now stitched up and the bleeding has stop. I will be taking him to the vet today for checkup on the wound (ensure no infection/inflamation) and the stitches will only be taken out about 10 more days later. This really spoil my mood for cny now sad.gif

He is still running around and barky even with a injured ear. doh.gif
We are trying to restrict his movement a bit as he is quite clumsy and likes to dash here and there. (Afraid he will bang himself on the wall and open up the wound again). Kero is still being seperated from him at the moment by a playpen so they can still see each other and sniff sniff but no playing. Kero is crazy about shushu's ear (first thing he will attack when play with shushu) rclxub.gif
I am suppose to bring shushu to the vet yesterday but the vet didnt open, so I will bringing him there today to check on his ear.

Hi all,

This thread is getting quiet. unsure.gif

I saw a very inspiring video today and thought of sharing with all the Retrievers lovers.

This is a video put together by Land of PureGold Foundation, of Carolyn Scott and her dancing GR partner, Rookie.
It is an amazing video and you can really see a very close bond and great affection between Rookie and Carolyn when they are dancing. wub.gif

Rookie, now 15 years old, has retired from competition and is battling with cancer. cry.gif cry.gif
His owner, Carolyn, is no longer able to complete either due to aftereffects of polio and its treatment. Post polio sequelae (or the late effects of polio) has left her with diminished balance, which could cause her to fall. cry.gif cry.gif

Hope you all enjoy it!

Just to find out what reaction your GR inside your house compound and when saw a dog passby do your GR bark ?? my GR will bark and bark until like wanted to fight or chase them away. Myself now still don't know his behaviour well maybe i never let him play with other dog. when i walk him and saw other dog he just like a silent killer wanted to go for the dog (to play or fight i don't know)  hmm.gif  but i always say NO NO and make him seat and see only but he follow instruction  flex.gif . When outside Ben don't bark when he saw other dog but he look like silent killer look to prey like that and children outside wanted to touch him i also scare of his look but inside house compound when children play with him is different he got a playful and happy face.  rclxub.gif
*
shushu is a very good watch dog. He is very alert at home, meaning anything (even a plastic bag) passby he will bark bark until the thing goes away. rclxub.gif It can be very headache coz scared will disturb the neighbour later.

However, when he goes out and other dog inside the house bark at him, he will get scared and wanted to run away. sweat.gif If he meets another dog while walking, he will bark (different barking) at the dog like asking the dog to come and play with him.

If he meet other people when outside, he is very friendly.

QUOTE(simchi @ Feb 2 2008, 07:35 PM)
Fala doesnt bark at strangers, she'll only bark when she sees me coming home from outside .
For Maya ...  sweat.gif
She not only bark but she growls when she sees someone passing by .

Fala is being bullied at home sad.gif Whenever I want to play/sayang Fala , Maya will jump right in to block us . Want me to sayang her only , very cheok sei .  sad.gif
*
Hmmm, i think you have to take charge - ignore Maya first and pay attention to Fala everytime you see them, so that Maya understand that Fala is higher position than her. Even if Maya jump right in front, scold her / push her away first. If not, later Fala will not have any standing in the house. sad.gif

My aunt's lab mix rottie got put down.... poor boy was 9 years old, he couldn't pee coz of his hormones causing blockage to his kidney, and without peeing and eating, he ended up with kidney and liver failure. Poor boy. The vet said it wouldn't have happened if my aunt had neutered him earlier.... RIP to Teddy boy.

sad.gif That's sad, I guess we better neuter/spay the pets before they reach older age - it will be better for their health.

GR / Labrador prone to overweight, which can cause hip/leg problems. That's why have to monitor their weight carefully.

Hi everyone.

Recently shushu's right hind leg is a bit "bengkok" when he walks so I might be bringing him to the vet for a checkup soon. sad.gif
I will probably get him x-ray for HD too. I know the vet told me once before (when shushu is small) that he may have mild HD problem and I think the x-ray will probably confirm better whether he has HD and /or how mild/serious the problem is currently.

I am also doing some reading about hip dysplasia (HD) to get myself prepared. Since this disease tend to affect a lot of GR and labradors, perhaps we can share some experience or tips on how to reduce/prevent HD.

Here is what I got so far:

QUOTE
What is HD?
Hip Dysplasia is a genetic disease that affects the hip joints of dogs. Dysplasia literally means abnormal, so hip dysplasia literally translates as abnormal formation of the hip socket.

What is the cause?
1) Genetic (inherited)
2) Environment

Symptoms:
- Your dog may become unwilling to run and play as much as they used to.
- They may have trouble getting up and down the stairs.
- Popping or snapping sounds when walking.
- They may be reluctant to exercise.
- They may have difficulty in rising.
- They may be reluctant to jump or stand on hind limbs.
- Some may have a soreness after lying down or after heavy exercise.
- A sensitivity to touch the hindquarters.
- An abnormal stance (leaning forward) or gait (bunny-hopping).

The condition will worsen until even normal daily activities are painful. Without intervention, these dogs may be unable to walk at all by a couple years of age. In most cases, however, the symptoms do not begin to show until the middle or later years in the dog's life.

Prevention / Care:

1) Weight management
Overweight dogs are at a much higher risk of HD, as by carrying the extra weight will stress the joint in a dog with a loose hip and cause it to worsen further.

2) Exercise
Do not over excercise the dog at a young age. Moderate exercise that strengthens the muscles, such as walking, slow jogging and swimming, is probably a good idea. Whereas, activities that apply a lot of force to the joint are not encourage. An example would be jumping activities such as playing Frisbee.

3) Warm and good sleeping areas
Most people with arthritis find that the signs tend to worsen in cold, damp weather. Keeping your pet warm, may help him be more comfortable.
Providing a firm, orthopedic foam bed helps many dogs with arthritis. Beds with dome-shaped, orthopedic foam distribute weight evenly and reduce pressure on joints. They are also much easier for the pet to get out of. Place the bed in a warm spot away from drafts.

4) Making daily activities less painful
Going up and down stairs is often difficult for arthritic pets, and for dogs, it can make going outside to urinate and defecate very difficult. Many people build or buy ramps, especially on stairs leading to the outside, to make it easier for the dogs to go outside.
Larger breed dogs can especially benefit from elevating their food and water bowls. Elevated feeders make eating and drinking more comfortable for arthritic pets, particularly if there is stiffness in the neck or back.
Wet or slippery floor will increase the chances of accident and may aggraviate the problem further.

5) Glucosamine and chondroitin supplements
When a dog has hip dysplasia or other osteoarthritis, the joint wears abnormally and the protective cartilage on the surface of the joint gets worn away and the resultant bone-to-bone contact creates pain. Glucosamine and chondroitin give the cartilage-forming cells (chondrocytes) the building blocks they need to synthesize new cartilage and to repair the existing damaged cartilage

6) Selective breeding
Selectively breeding animals with good hips can significantly reduce the incidence of hip dysplasia. If we choose to use dysplastic animals for breeding, it can increase the incidence of hip dysplasia . Breeding two animals with excellent hips does not guarantee that all of the offspring will be free of hip dysplasia, but there will be a much lower incidence than if we breed two animals with fair or poor hips. If we only bred animals with excellent hips it would not take long to make hip dysplasia a rare occurrence. If owners insisted on only purchasing an animal that had parents and grandparents with certified good or excellent hips, or if breeders only bred these excellent animals, then the majority of the problems would be eliminated.

Good article:
http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cl...9&articleid=444
http://www.labradorforums.co.uk/hips.html

I also noted that some article mentioned about diet and supplement, such as not to feed high protein and high calories food or calcium supplement to the growing puppies, as rapid growth during puppy stage will increase the chances of HD. Not too sure about this info. unsure.gif
Any other tips/info to share?

For those dogs with hip problems, I will normally recommend Acana Adult Light, simply because dogs with such problem, shouldnt gain too much weight, and it is good for those already overweight, to reduce weight. Also, it contains Glucosamine and chondroitin, to help to ease the problem.
*
Yes, reduced weight /light dog food is better. smile.gif
I noticed that a lot of dog foods packet also contains glucosamine and chondroitin but not sure what is the dosage inside.
It may not be enough probably, so we may still need to add them as supplements.

Better take care of him whether shushu have it now or not better give him supplement to built up his joints first.
Like Ben now 1yrs 2 month i change his food 1 day once and i started give him glucosamine even he did not see any sign yet. i see others dog with HD aiyaa... hati sakit.
Remember don't let your dog stand right up with 2 back leg and don't let him lay down like a piglet is very bad can easy cause HD.
Rapid growth will not increase the chance of HD but the way they flooring that hurt it. LIke in one thread the Huskly puppy 4 month only having HD now.

*
Yes, I did gave shushu the supplement last time when he was small for a few months. The vet advise us to stop for about 2 weeks before continuing. Subsequently, the vet said that he is more ok and we can stop the supplement. However, recently I noticed his is favouring one leg and i am thinking to put him on supplements again. Can I ask what brand of supplements you are giving to your GR? I did ask my vet and he recommend me to get human glucosamine hydrochloride one, but so far those i found in pharmacist are of glucosamine sulfide only. rclxub.gif

Erm, you mean the piglet pose (with 2 hind legs straight out) like this?
user posted image
That's his favourite pose. sad.gif I do notice the difference with kero - kero when he lay down, he will rest one side of his backside on the floor and 2 hind legs together on the other side.
Luckily my house flooring is tiles and not the very smooth one. It might get slippery if it is wet. I did to put a large carpet on the floor once, then shushu destroyed my carpet after a few months. doh.gif

ya lo.. this GR..... nothing can keep long in the house biting only now Ben turn all my plastic chair and bite off and shorten the chair leg  rclxub.gif
I try give Ben this type Synoquin is good but expensive so i change JD Ark Natural cheaper.

Icic, now everytime he lay like this, i will push his body so he will change to laying on the sideway. Hopefully it helps.

Hmmm, some imported one I think they do have birthcert too to show their lineage, something equivalent to MKA cert.
Not sure about this. What I know is shushu's dad is imported from Thailand and his MKA cert show some registration number and a bracket stating about imported from thailand. Got to go home and double check on this.

All in around 2.6k AUD
Yea..in malaysia most goldens locally bred are golden in colour

But main reason why i got it from aust is because at least i am sure that they are bred properly with hip scores taken into consideration.
Malaysia have too many BYB and puppy farms..

No really all golden colour - surprising the ones i see in Ipoh are mostly light beige. Mine is consider darker colour than most of them and he is actually light gold only. smile.gif I prefer darker colour.

Yea...inclusive of all that is actually 2.7....
I also went around searching for petshops that do imports..but couldnt find any..found one in singapore..but they wanted to charge me 4-4.5k SGD ..so sourced for breeders myself online..
He hasnt arrived yet..going to be here only 2 weeks later as puppies have to be 3 months before being exported...

Coz the average breeder here in malaysia doesnt care about hip/elbow scores at all before breeding and where their pups go

The australian breeders on the other hand are super serious abt where they place their pups..and health tests( Got a email with 12 questions for me to answer from one breeder, had to call another breeder in australia through the phone)

If anyone is interested can go to dolforums.com.au
see their threads...very interesting for dog lovers

I do agree with you that the breeders here don't care about hip/elbow scores at all. Most of them are just breeding them to get quick profit. mad.gif They don't care about quality at all. You can see that a lot of the GR here always has/suffer from HD problems. Some doesn't even look like GR at all.

In fact, some of the "owners" has started asking about my shushu for potential stud. dry.gif
When i rejected them and told them that GR should ideally be breed only when they are about 3 years old and that if i ever breed my shushu, i need to check to make sure he is not suffering from HD, they just laugh at me and said "no lar, >1 year can already. the younger you breed is better". Yah, right! doh.gif I am also sure they don't know anything about HD. shakehead.gif
Really frustrating. rclxub.gif

Btw, congrats on your purchase - the puppy looks beautiful. wub.gif
Do share more photos when he arrives.

Prince pappy,
Have a safe trip and I am sure prince will miss u alot. Give him lots of TLC before you leave!

Are this people just random pet owners or puppy mill owners?
Yea must be super aggravating to see these people

I see a lot of GR puppies in pet shops in JB (where i stay) which..are really low quality...and are so tiny
*
They are random pet owners. I meet them at the weekly training class.
Based on the conversation, most of them always think of breeding their furkids for money. doh.gif
I guess the training place is a good place to scout/meet "potential" pairing for their dogs. dry.gif
Sometimes, i am a bit annoyed by the attitude, i don't feel like attending the training anymore.

I saw GR puppies available most of the time in ipoh petshops - there is a lot of supply here.
The price is cheap too, but the quality........ sweat.gif

When shushu was between 4 months old to 7 months (ugly stage), I was quite worried too. cry.gif
He look no different from a mongrel. His fur keep shedding until become short short, he was thin and scrawny looking - his body proportion was all out.

My dad was complaining why i spend all the $$ to buy him when he look just like the "wong choi" next door. rclxub.gif (Though he complain but he really sayang shushu also. laugh.gif)
I have to keep showing them the GR pictures saying that shushu will grow to be just like that. Luckily he did....hehe tongue.gif

Kokifung,
I like goldie sleeping picture! wub.gif

I didn't realise the difference until i got my cavalier, Kero. Kero sleeps very differently from shushu. He likes to sleep upside down laugh.gif laugh.gif

Shushu is same as keithkeat one - I seldom see him sleep when there is anybody around. He will be busy trying to follow and keep a eye on everybody. tongue.gif
Even if he is sleeping, the moment he hears a sound he will open his eyes. It is very very hard to catch him sleeping. Everytime we come down from upstairs, he is already at the bottom of the stairs waiting for you. Don't know why but he has been very alert since his puppy days.
As such, he is actually a good guard dog. laugh.gif

If on rare occasion that i find him sleeping, he didn't snore so far. smile.gif

Compare with kero, kero can sleep anytime and everywhere. laugh.gif And he snores very loudly for such a small size dog! sweat.gif
