you are much much much better off taking the train in tokyo. their train system is excellent. as for faraway places, you can take the train or the shinkansen (bullet train). i don't know, but i wouldn't recommend driving in japan, its not the same as say, NZ or Aus where driving is recommended

I let travel agency to apply for me. Once you have all the documents and photo ready, you can pass to travel agency and you should get your visa in 5 days. I pay RM50 for the runner fee, better than take 2 days leave and go my self.

driving along jalan tun razak can be a bit of a nightmare at times. but i went there by LRT. Their embassy is right after the Singapore embassy if you are coming from the LRT side. Stop at Ampang Park station. The walk is about 4-5mins

I got 5 passport. my whole family. and i have prepared all my document. I thinks its not worth to pay rm250 for a runner to apply visa for me.
I just take half day to submit and another half day for collection.

JR Pass can only be used on JR train - so actually most the metro etc. around Tokyo isn't included.

Shinkansen travel is fine, you can use it and the price works out a lot better if you do a lot of train trips. The Shinkansen tickets are very expensive when bought seperately - around Y13K it cost from Kyoto to Kyoto.

Only one you can't use JR pass on (Shinkansen) is the Nozomi which is the most frequent I believe.

The cheapest way to get to kyoto is by willer bus pass - 10k yen for 3 days of unlimited bus ride but would have to spend the night in the bus.

needs to be in tokyo. the contest, whether fortunately or unfortunately, doesn't really come 'free,' need to then write about it with videos, photos, etc, for the sponsor. but expenses paid so no complain smile.gif
