Hulk

Fully-fleshed out characters, a fully-realized script, some kickass action sequences and a unique visual style make this one of the best comic book movies I've seen. It's transcendent the way The Dark Knight is. I still dont understand how the general population can dislike this one so much. The only reason I can think of is they were expecting a cheap and fast Ramly burger and got served class A serious gourmet shit and didnt like it. Definitely in the running for the most underrated gem of all time. This is brilliant.

Am assuming you mean, Ang Lee's and Eric Bana's Hulk. Yes, it is good... Is this the first time you've watched it? smile.gif

There is actually a Back to the Future vibe to it. It is actually not too bad a movie.... if Zac Efron isn't Zac Efron... Am I making sense?? tongue.gif

Yes it's Ang Lee's Hulk from 2003, not Some Mediocre Hollywood Director's The Mediocre Hulk from last year. I've seen it 4 or 5 times now.
*
I wouldn't necessary call Louis Leterrier who directed The Incredible Hulk a hollywood director. He is french and had done alot of other stuff (in France and not hollywood).

He is currently working on the New Clash of the Titans.

I still think that the new version of Hulk has merits too!

To each their own I suppose!! icon_rolleyes.gif

Wow, have not seen this for a while, and was taken aback by how many big names are attached to this drama!!? Am a great fan of Rob Reiner (director of The Princess Bride). Also am still very impress with how the cast "brought it" to the movie, making this drama movie VERY engaging and entertaining.

Good job Rob!! smile.gif

Nope I don't like them both. As good as it gets - what's so great about it? It's just a rom-com for the older folks and Jack was just Jack, i don't understand his and Helen Hunt's Oscar either. Bucket List was a little pushing the limits - it's unbelievable and to be honest, it's kinda tiring seeing him and Morgan Freeman playing the same role for over 30 years now. Maybe not Jack but at least for Morgan.

Wow, I finally know someone who DOESN'T like As Good As It Gets....

Just finished watching Red Cliff 1 and 2 (in one seating).

PQ and AQ (Dolby True HD 7.1 AND DTS Master Lossless 7.1) are good (HK Version). When you are taking about the lead actor, pores galore (Mr Tony Leung needs more R&R and a face spa treatment) tongue.gif. At least they are NOT caked in makeup!!

Point of interest, in the opening scene of Red Cliff 2, the soldiers at Cao Cao camp were opening the gate to the said camp, and what do you see at the bottom of the heavy wooden gate? Modern Car Roda to help with the opening of the gate! Only 1080 resolution can you see this! (If you blink your eyes during the scene, you would miss it!!) Wow, the Chinese were really ahead of their times!! tongue.gif

Cutthroat Island (1995) BD

PQ Good
AQ Excellent. Impressive really

What can I say about this movie that had NOT been said?

Well let's start with the bad

1) Geena Davis as a lady Pirate!? What were Carolco Bosses thinking (Director Rene Harlin was married to Geena, so I know what he was THINKING!! tongue.gif)

2) Frank Langella is a KAYU bad pirate *Sigh*

3) This movie was SO expensive (they built two life size pirate ships for the movie and the cost was ONLY surpassed by Pirates of the Caribbean) that when it TANKED at the box office, it brought down it's production company Carolco, which also produced hits like Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

The Good

1) Matthew Modine did a GREAT damsel in distress tongue.gif

2) The storyline is actually a bit better then the 3rd Pirates of the Caribbean!

3) So many things about this movie were copied by the writers of the Pirates of the Caribbean (down to the monkey, SERIOUS)!!

So if you have nothing better to do on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon and is in the mood for a pirate movie, give this a swill!!

Okay, let the criticism come!! smile.gif

The Princess Bride (1987)

What a BLAST!

I never saw this in the cinema.

I first saw this on TV and had since bought it's DVD, which was great.

And now, it is available on BD and what a glorious BD it is!!

Please note that this is a 1987 movie and the transfer is great.

There are a few (VERY few) scene where the characters looked a little soft (after the "baddies" finished climbing the Cliff of Insanity) but overall the transfer is great.

No scratches or dust specks. There are grain, but that only adds to the film like quality of the movie.

I've read the book after I got the DVD (couple of years ago) and I can tell you that it is a very FAITHFUL adaption of the said book.

Each and everyone of the actors did a FANTASTIC job and direction from the director (the great Rob Reiner) and dialogue are SHARP!

I highly recommend this movie to lovers of Adventure, Romance and Comedy!

Oh just go get it!! tongue.gif

It's deliberate. Vol. 1 and 2, both damn fine movies.

GI Joe - This was supposed to suck! Everyone I trust who has seen it says its worse than Transformers 2! The trailers looked did the opposite of whetting my appetite! I really wanted this to suck so bad so that I could proclaim to my friends who liked it "how can you call this turd a good movie?!". Oh boy. I enjoyed it. It's not miles better than Transformers 2. It's immeasurably better. It gave me a slight Spy Kids vibe, a good sense of fun and some obviously bad and cheesy CGI (which I think was deliberate). You miss nothing by not watching it, but it's harmless fun.

Plus that Rachel Nichols girl is hot! So that's another reason to see this instead of TF2.

I never said that G.I. Joe sucked!! So that would mean, you don't TRUST me!!?! tongue.gif

Added on October 5, 2009, 2:07 pmSuperman Returns (2006)

Perplexing!!

I find myself perplexed. I like this movie alot and supposedly, alot of people do not.

Firstly, many people had stated that the movie video transfer is NOT up to par, but it is. I've watched this in the cinema and this BD surpasses that. There are some scenes where Superman looks "fake" but that is because in those scenes he is CGIed (or I perceives him as CGIed, it look like that in the cinema) !!

I think that Bryan Singer actually put a lot of effort into making this movie unique and I'm doubly perplex why lover of comics hate this movie as well, seeing how much homage is paid to the media (eg when Superman gently put down Kitty's car, that is the cover to the first Action Comic Superman appeared in). He also anchored the movie as much as he could into the real world (when Superman first attempted to save the plane Lois was on, he tried to grab on the fuselage of the plane but it broke off because it could not take the stress)

I like this movie and am bump that Bryan Singer would not get to direct Brandon Routh in another Superman movie *Sigh*

30 Days of Night (BD)

Wow! What a great movie!!

Great story. Fantastic description of vampire (vampire are NOT DROP DEAD GORGEOUS creatures [i.e. Interview with the Vampire, TWILIGHT *Groan*] to "die" for [no pun intended] but vicious BLOOD DRINKING creatures of the night!!)

I really have NOTHING negative to say about this movie, great cast, great direction and great sets!

PQ and AQ is good on BD

Interesting to see Ben Foster (he plays Archangel in X-Men 3 also am looking forward to Pandorum which is being marketed as Horror in Space [like the original Alien] where he plays the lead) in this playing a REALLY weird character.

Ending is a little unpredictable and for the romantics out there, please make sure there are tissues handy.

As a horror movie, I give this a 4/5 stars

Nuff said

I thought 30 days was a very weak movie. Some of the scenes were good but there were lots of plotholes (i can't remember them now though tongue.gif )
*
Potholes like roads in Malaysia?? tongue.gif

U must at least accept that as a vampire story, is it kinda unique (i.e. NOT Twillight, True Blood, Angel and Interview with a Vampire-ish)

Also, the ending was touching!? No? nod.gif

I love European stuff, but not always readily available in Malaysia, no?? tongue.gif

Cliche as it is (30 Days of Night, which was adapted from a graphic novel), at least you like the ending!! nod.gif

I cant remember much about the movie, there are a few bright spots I think, but overall I didnt like it.

P/S: everything is readily available in malaysia... through the interweb. laugh.gif

>I thought the ending to 30 Days, well, sucked

I won't hold THAT against you, especially since you had shown me how to resurrect my deader then door nail thread (Horror Movies)

Ya mean like download the stuff and then burn it to dvd, store it on harddisk and thumbdrive and then watch it on PC or TV thru Mediaplayer.

I've got LOTS of stuff already, you want to to complicate my life with EVEN more stuff?? biggrin.gif

Actually am toying with the idea of getting a media player... But haven't decided on which machine.

Already got ALOT of DVD and Blu-Ray, not so sure if I want to go there...

Though getting stuff that is NOT readily available is somewhat attractive...

Are you trying to "poison" me!! Seriously!!! smile.gif

Watchmen Director's Cut (BD, 2009)

This is one of my ALL time favourite Graphic Novel.

When I first read this (1991) I was like OMG, superheroes were dropping like flies. It was NEVER done. And the theme is so... adult (rape, murder, MASSACRE!!) I mean, who does that in a comic book!! (Alan Moore does)

When I first caught wiff of this movie, I was both ecstatic and afraid. Ecstatic because Zack Snyder is directing it (I'm mean this guy brought Frank Miller's 300 alive, which both made me giddy with pleasure and horror [made killing so "beautiful"]) and afraid because of my love for the original material.

I watched in the cinema (Pavillion, THX cinema, the first day it was shown) and when the Comedian was thrown out of his apartment window, I was like, WOW, it is just like the comic book! Every single thing that was memorable about the comic book was on screen. I was puzzle by why Dr Manhattan's private bit was blurred and when I watched in again on BD, it DAWNED on me it was because of the cencorship board!! tongue.gif

And when I watched the last frame of the movie, still GIDDY from the experience, I heard something that cause me alarm!!?! A patron of the cinema behind me said, "Tak tahu apa benda dia buat!!"!

It hit me, not many people in Malaysia would understand the full extend of the movie. It is NOT their faulty that they don't know much about American History in the 1960 - 1980s. Most of them were either a baby or were not even born yet... A cold chill swept through me... will this masterpiece bomb at the box office.... And indeed it did not do as well as it's director and producers had hoped for especially with all it's legal problems it had faced!

The PQ and AQ of the movie is FANTASTIC! All the painful detail Zack Snyder took to recreate the comic world is very apparent (rigth down to Mr Manhattan's pee pee tongue.gif)

I don't really know how to recommend this movie, because of it's weight! (i.e. the above mention history knowledge)

It is a masterpiece nevertheless!

My two sens worth.

its a cameo. if she's in there a bit longer then she'll be as annoying as you know what. INCONCEIVABLE!

come on bro, if you're that ancient, you be referencing chaplin, keaton, lloyd, marlene dietrich, joan crawford, noir, bogart, wilder etc. if you're so called ancient u be praising adventures of robin hood left n right. being ancient is cool, you can give us insight of whats good or whats shitty and you can tell those losers who don't watch anything pre 2000 to go die.

well a cameo is a cameo, like marlon brando in supeman or sam jackson in out of sight, martin sheen in hot shots 2, harrison (fark off) ford in bruno etc

anyway watched tony scott's revenge. this is a sequel to top gun and wish megan fox will be as hot as Madeleine Stowe in this when she's 32.

as for watchmen, i think it blows and i think Zack Snyder is a hack and the same goes to dark knight n effin nolan and bale is overrated as fark
*
Er... When I say Ancient, I mean there was this lyre player, in Karnak Egypt (during the reign of Ramses the Great, 1000 years after the Great Pyramids Giza were built), whom I know, she was.... tongue.gif

Well, it so happens, Alfred Hitchcock's first American movie, Rebecca, is one of my all time favorite movie!!

The reason I don't often bring up movies from the 40s, 50s and 60s is because most forumer here are Gen X or Gen Y, if not later, they won't have a clue of what/who I'm talking about!?!

For example, most wouldn't know that Steve Martin's 1991 movie Father of the Bride, was a remake of Spencer Tracy's Father of the Bride (1950, Elizabeth Taylor played his daughter). Some might NOT even know Steve Martin's Father of the Bride!!?

Marlon Brando's cameo on 1978's Superman, earned him 7 million dollars (unheard of, in Cleopatra (1963), Elizabeth Taylor was paid 1,000,000 USD by Fox to play Cleopatra, and when that movie TANKED at the box-office, Fox almost went under and they took the risk of making The Sound of Music, which won the best movie, in 1964, saving the movie company) and that movie made a lot of money. The additional scene Richard Donner shot for the second movie, were never used, because he got fired after the first one, they dusted off the shelves and used in Superman Return (which I love), I doubt Wynona Ryder made much from he "cameo" in Star Trek!

I do like the works of Errol Flynn [The Prince and the Pauper (1937), The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), The Sea Hawk (1940)], Mickey Rooney in the Andrew 'Andy' Hardy series, Spencer Tracy, Laurence Olivier, Joan Fontaine, Ingrid Bergman, Cary Grant, Bette David etc, etc. And the point of bringing this actors and actresses and their works up in a forum where NOT MANY would know them, would serve NO PURPOSE??

I do agree on certain level, the art of telling a story through movie is dying. Alot of movies nowadays rely on "glamour"/CGI/actors or actresses who generate a lot of news/scandals to draw people to the cinema (or buy the VCD (*GASP*)/DVD/BD, style over substance). There are Silver Linings (eg. Pixar) and stuff that Peter Jackson does.

I've been told that I frighten people (hence the moniker Mov_Freak) and do not want to frighten people away from forums I participate in, so that is why I do not tell people my age, and am very forthright in informing people that I'm Ancient!

Rebecca (1940)

Directed by Alfred Hitchcock
Produced by David O. Selznick

Several interesting facts about this movie.

David O. Selznick had produced Gone with the Wind and it was a smashing hit. He then brought a famous director form England to Hollywood to make Hollywood movies. He lured Alfred Hitchcock to Hollywood by buying the rights to Rebecca a popular book and he knew that Hitchcock wanted to direct the movie version of it (Hitchcock himself wanted to buy the rights to the book).

Having "invited" Hitchcock to the States, it was immediate apparent that both person have strong will and did things differently.

David O. Selznick wanted the movie to be a word to word translation of the book, and Alfred Hitchcock wanted to take some artistic licensing (changing things that would not work for a movie)

David O. Selznick was a workaholic and is often sleeping on his couch in his office at night whislt Hictchcock would be home for dinner.

Through David O. Selznick "adamentness" Hitchcock was able to make Rebecca the way his intended. One of the way he managed that was that everytime David O. Selznick was on Location, no filming was done (therefore he cannot intervene) and as soon as he left the stage, Hitchcock would quickly filmed what he want!!

Now for the movie itself.

There were conflict between the two leads. Laurence Olivier was already a well known actor at the time whilst Joan Fontaine was very new to the game. Apparently Laurence never gave Joan the time of the day between the takes. There was even a story which states that everyone threw Joan a birthday party because it was her birthday during the filming of the movie, and Laurence didn't even drop in!!

This could be due to the fact the Laurence wanted his real girlfriend of the time, Vivien Leigh, as the role whom Joan is currently playing.

Another interesting note is that the role whom Joan played, has no name, and the movie title Rebecca is actually the name of Laurence character's first dead wife, who she (Joan) feels like she is still competing with.

The story is interesting. Shy girl meets rich widow man, widow man falls for shy girl, sweeps her off her feet and marries her. They toured Europe and everything is great until he brings her home... where the proverbial $hit hits the fan.

I don't want to say more until the interested parties had the chance to see this

I hope this is what you meant Makakeke!
