Taken
Wow. A very UNDERRATED movie. Liam Neeson does a good job as an ACTION star. Good action thriller storyline. Good acting. Highlights the seedy side of France, Paris!! Recommend this to thrill seekers! |

QUOTE(QuickFire @ Aug 30 2009, 11:16 PM) Its not underrated at all. If memory serve me right it got good reviews from critics, and audiences everywhere love it. It's a very entertaining flick, and Neeson is just badass. I'm sorry, I should have made myself clearer. What I meant by underrated was that it should have made ALOT more in terms of Box Office (> US Box Office of USD 145,000,989)! The Last House on the Left (2009) Bad things happen to good people and then good people turned bad-ass!! Saw the unrated version and boy is it VIOLENT!! Interesting to see Tony Goldwin (great grand son of Metro Goldwyn Mayers also know for his role of @zzhole in Ghost and Disney's "Hm Hm Hm Tarzan"!) as father roles and the kid from Gladiator and Unbreakable all grown up! If you like VIOLENT movie, the unrated version of this movie is for u (especially the closing scene!!!) This post has been edited by Mov_freak: Aug 31 2009, 01:34 PM |

QUOTE(Makakeke @ Aug 31 2009, 12:14 PM) The closing scene as in the microwave scene? It was such a stupid and ridiculous scene lah.. The movie was overall just decent entertainment. Well, i thought that the ending is a little CRUDE but effective way of getting rid of the baddies!! btw, 150 million is actually quite a good turnover, some good films (Oscar films) never pass the 100 million mark. Yes, USD 150M is respective, but if it had made alot more, then movie studio would make more movie like Taken (that I'm assuming cost USD 80M - USD100M to make or District 9 [which cost USD 30M to make] for that matter) then movie I don't know like Transformer 2 which made USD 398,441,218 to date but cost USD200M to make and market!! (*Sigh*). Movie companies HAVE TO LEARN that a movie with GREAT stories and well made (Below USD 100M) are BETTER then more Transformer (the horror, the horror, 3 & 4????!?) My two sens! Added on August 31, 2009, 4:50 pm QUOTE(QuickFire @ Aug 22 2009, 11:41 PM) Quick question Quickfire, I know you usually don't like animation from other company (eg Dreamworks etc) but what did you think of Kungfu Panda and Happy Feet?Added on August 31, 2009, 5:21 pmJust re watched Happy Feet on BD. It's great movie except for the overly optimistic ending! Also would have like to see an actual making of the movie! Two Thumbs up! This post has been edited by Mov_freak: Aug 31 2009, 05:21 PM |

QUOTE(QuickFire @ Aug 31 2009, 09:33 PM) I like myself some gore, but the microwave was so obviously tacked on, and its not helped by the rubbish CGI either. You should have seen the deleted scene of that scene on the DVD/BD!! Actually I like some of the Dreamworks stuff like Shrek, Bee Movie, Flushed Away, and Kung Fu Panda. Those are okay. But they are grossly inferior to anything Pixar has put out, yet most people I know say things like "Pixar cartoons ah... okay okay lah... not bad, but Dreamworks much better lah. So much funnier". ... Never seen Happy Feet. P/S: Now that you've mentioned Kung Fu Panda, I might rewatch it again sometime this week. I like the First Shrek, Flush Away and Kung Fu Panda. Wow, if you haven't watched happy Feet, I can only imagine how you would react after watching it! (I can still remember the FIRST time I watch it!!) Go on, give yourself a treat and watch it!! |

QUOTE(Makakeke @ Sep 1 2009, 12:47 AM) I actually rank Shrek 1 in the top of Dreamworks list, and in the same podium as the good Pixar movies. Flushed Away and Happy Feet were good animation but it lacks that touch that Pixar always seem to be able to conjure. KungFu Panda was funny though. Hmmmm.... In my opinion, what Happy Feet lack in terms of "The Pixar" touch, it made up for the clever use of music!! |

QUOTE(QuickFire @ Sep 1 2009, 02:52 PM) Well... if you can pick Shrek over Toy Story, Finding Nemo over Shark Tale, The Incredibles over Madagascar, Wall-E over Kung Fu Panda, Up over Monsters vs Aliens, then I'm not sure if it's just opinion or suspect taste. You mean Madagascar over The Incredibles and Kung Fu Panda over Wall-E, right!!? So the music is by John Powell... I like him. Btw you can always use spoiler tags, I dont think I will be able to watch Happy Feet anytime soon. Er... sorry, was the above directed at me or kding2?? If directed at me I kinda have stated which animations I like from Dreamworks above, if otherwise, well everybody has an opinion, REALLY (just like 20% of the world likes Speed Racer and 80% of the world has an otherwise opinion!!?! Well, Makakeke had stated that he wants to re watch HF, so let him watch first before I *spoiler tag* my comments about the ending!! This post has been edited by Mov_freak: Sep 1 2009, 03:10 PM |

QUOTE(QuickFire @ Sep 1 2009, 03:19 PM) lol, first part was directed at whomever prefers dreamworks over pixar, and the second part is the response to you. Ah...Added on September 2, 2009, 12:43 pmAfter watching a whole bunch of RomCom (Bride Wars, Made of Honor and My Best Friend's Girlfriend.... [DON'T ASK]) I watched half of I Love You Man. I have to say, I was a little skeptical about this title (and the whole concept of *groan* bromance) and also (I'm going to be bombarded with LOTS of negativity about this) Paul Rudd (He was AWFUL in H.K.'s Gen-Y Cops, didn't like him after that!!). Having said the above and having only saw half of the movie, I'm actually liking it. Okay am LIKING IT ALOT! There I said it, happy!! Will try and post full details after I had had a chance to watch the whole thing!! This post has been edited by Mov_freak: Sep 5 2009, 11:53 PM |

Old Boy
Oh boy. Oh My Goodness, what a movie! I'm not sure if I can put into word what I'd experience whilst I was watching the movie! Here is an attempt to do so, bewilderment, puzzlement, humor, shock, terror, NAUSEA!!!! I have to hand it to the Koreans for making the MOST SICK movie I have ever had the chance to experience!!!! Kudos to Min-sik Choi for his role as Dae-su Oh. His physical and mental changes in the movie is MOST palpable!!!! Will Smith is said play his role in the American version, I DON'T think he can pull it off. I DON'T think the American production is going to be BALLSY enough to STICK to the original material! My two sens worth! |

QUOTE(QuickFire @ Sep 7 2009, 01:22 PM) Btw I forgot to mention I watched Kung Fu Panda last week too. A lot of fun, but I still maintain it isnt as good as Pixar's worst. To me most of the jokes fell flat. It really excels in the action sequences, and this is the only Dreamworks' effort to look almost as good as Pixar's. The colour palette is beautiful. Okay, this is NOT a Dreamwork vs Pixar observation. The following are base on the merits (or otherwise) of the movie Kungfu Panda itself. Things that worked Master Oogway (especially) and and Sifu's characters. Sifu having to "empty" himself and find new ways of teaching PO (a half filled cup will overflow) The secret scroll and the method to access it The Five Master's Kungfu skills The fact that they NEVER explain why Mr Ping has a Panda for a son!!? Po's and Tai Lung's final battle (how Po's "blubber" render's Tai Lung strongest skill useless). The secret ingredient to the secret ingredient soup!! Color scheme Things that didn't work Tigress (apart from getting Angelina Jolie to jump abroad) All in all a fun movie, that pays homage to the Shaw Brother's martial arts library. (Yes, my age is showing again!!) |

Did a movie marathon yesterday
K-20 [Japanese] Takeshi Kaneshiro plays Heikichi Endo a circus performer (acrobat) who is framed for being a notorious cat burglar, K-20! After being frame he escapes prison and trained to be a cat-burglar himself so that he can clear his name. This movie has very stunning set and everything looks retro (like pre World War II) and also proclaims Japan's fascination with the "old world" (Europe with their Lords, Dukes and Duchess). This movie is also very heavyly influence by Tim Burton's Batman with a smidge of Joel Schumacher. I love the flying machine and the grappling hook that Takeshi Kaneshiro uses. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Definitely worth a watch. The Last Starfighter Wow a blast from the past. Loved this movie when I was much younger. And had purchased a remastered copy recently. The remaster is decent but the movie in itself... well not so. I was surprise to find that the effect are CGI (rudimentary. Always thought that Young Sherlock Holmes [1985] was one of the first few movie with CGI [by Pixar which was owned by George Lucas, until he sold it to Steve Jobs]. But this 1984 movie clearly has CGI!!) and there is an attempt to make it like Spielberg directed it (throw in a much younger brother for the "cute" factor). The story line is simple, effects are rudimentary (aliens look weird because they are aliens and their looks serves NO function... *sigh*). Heavily influenced by E.T. and Star Wars. Not sure if the younger generation would enjoy this now!! I suppose this movies are good for "uncles" (me included) who wants to recapture their childhood!! Cutthroat Island Remember this movie was made WAY before Masters and Commanders (a much underrated movie) and Pirates of The Caribbean: The Cursed of the Black Pearl. Sets are great (the Pirate ships are a blast and also note that Hollywood had not produced a pirate movie for ages before this), costumes are great, cheesy and fun storyline... but Geena Davis as the lead? Matthew Modine plays a good Damsel in distress and was surprise to find Christopher Masterson [from Malcolm in the Middle] in it as Mr Bowen!! Fun movie if you have nothing better to do! |

I Love You Man (Part Deux review)
---------------------------------------- The ending to the movie isn't rocket science (predictable) it is the journey to the end that is fun (I LUV the billboards!! Fav moments "Honey, it is REALLY smoky in there" (*Says his girlfriend after she had kissed him....*) "Everything you got!", "Everything you got!", "Everything you got!" says a Personal Trainer to his client. "I wonder if my pineapple matches your pineapple!" (*them comparing pineapples*) "Nope, your's is short and fat, mine is long and skinny!" (Slogan to a billboard) "License to SELL!" Let you imaginings run wild!! How to Alienate People and Lose Friends ---------------------------------------------- What a gem of a movie! Had a dvd for awhile now and never got around to it! I have to say Simon Pegg is becoming one of my favorite actors (Comedian category)!! Script is clever, acting and wit are sharp, I want to watched the movie which they showed a trailer of in the movie (Theresa: The Making of a Saint!!) LOL!!!! I'm have to give a little credit to Megan Fox for playing.... Megan Fox/Paris Hilton (stupid Chihuahua dog)!! I hope that Simon Pegg doesn't over expose himself..... You can interpret that any way you want!! |

QUOTE(Makakeke @ Sep 9 2009, 03:27 PM) I hated How to Alienate People and Lose Friends. Simon Pegg isn't funny at all being in an American comedy. It was so contrived. How is the script clever and witty without the british influence in it? Hi Makakeke. To start off, you are English right??! I think that is the whole point! Simon Pegg sees the lighter side of things but the rest of the "Americans" are so upright! (Interesting how American think that the British are the uptight ones!!) >without the british influence Er... Doesn't Simon Pegg standing up singing England England whilst the band is playing Yankee Doodle count?? It is just a matter of opinion. There is no need to bite anything off!! |

QUOTE(maxizanc @ Sep 9 2009, 07:46 PM) Actually, later in was revealed (about 2 days later) that is was a publicity stunt for the Borat movie.Added on September 11, 2009, 10:32 am QUOTE(maxizanc @ Sep 10 2009, 11:14 PM) I watched Hulk just now on 1080p. I'd say wow, this time i really enjoyed Hulk so much. And i think i'm gonna embarrassed myself by saying Hulk is better than the Incredible Hulk (i rated the Incredible Hulk higher that Hulk before). I like Ang Lee's Hulk to. And this doesn't mean I didn't like Edward Norton portray of The Incredible Hulk.Just that Hulk is slightly missing about the villain (maybe because it's supposed to be a movie about Bruce Banner before he is a hulk). Eric Bana as Bruce Banner/Hulk was very effective than Edward Norton. Just one thing is, i don't really like the villain in this movie (which is his father) I think Ang Lee's hulk didn't work for many people because Hulk's origins was TOO complex (his daddy played around with his genes, then gave him nanities, which were dormant until he got fried by gamma radiation.....). What I especially like about Eric Bana's Hulk was the scene where the American Army was chasing after Hulk in the Desert and then what looks like the Grand Canyon (the gamma dogs were a little silly, though hard to film) What I love about Edward Norton's Incredible Hulk was the REALLY down on his luck scene, where he doesn't have readily access to money and have to beg in the streets of Mexico (more like the old TV series, minus Lou Ferrigno [who was in I Love You Man!! *Plug, Plug*]) and ending buying the PURPLE pants!! Wonder if Edward would come back for the Avenger movie... (don't think Eric Bana would touch this role again, and Edward had a huge fight with the production company during the editing process) Added on September 11, 2009, 11:52 amI Corrupt All Cops (I.C.A.C) I didn't have high hopes for this movie, and surprisingly, find myself like it alot! The main reason for my lack of hope was the director Wong Jing who is a self profess I'm in it for the money NOT the art. And this is NOT the case with I Corrupt All Cops! It is an attempt to show how and why the I.C.A.C. was established in Hong Kong during the 70's Most actors did their role well (Wong Jing included) and the in-surges of Chinese actress into Hong Kong isn't funny! There are some strong women figures in the movie (Leung Kah Fai's main wife) and also the lady boss. The character I had an issue with is Alex Fong, who started out like he is going to steal the show, but whimmed out in the last minute (to many veterans in the show like Anthony Wong and Leung Kah Fai) If you want an entertaining Hong Kong movie that doesn't SUCK (Kung Fu Cyborg anyone???????!) give this a try This post has been edited by Mov_freak: Sep 11 2009, 11:55 AM |

QUOTE(Wira Hikari @ Sep 17 2009, 09:59 PM) *Whew*For a minute there, I thought I was in Twilight Zone...... Added on September 19, 2009, 7:06 am QUOTE(QuickFire @ Sep 18 2009, 01:58 PM) It's about a couple who just lost their infant son. The mother is grief-stricken, blaming it all on herself, becoming depressed and even suicidal. The husband, who is a therapist, decides to take her to a cabin in the woods to begin the recuperation process. But once there they are met with stranger occurrences. After that things start to go real awry. In a very graphic way. Wow, finally SOMETHING that makes Quickfire squirm!! Apart from the baby and a few seconds of faceless (literally) strangers, the features only the two main actors. There is exquisite photography work, and it has a lot of of subliminal psychological subtexts. The whole thing is very uncompromising. It is certainly interesting, but not many people can take this kind of extremity I think. I dont think I want to ever see this again. This post has been edited by Mov_freak: Sep 21 2009, 09:08 AM |
