Oh shat, i can't remember what's  Aaron Eckhart plays as. And what did he do? I definitely miss the movie.
*
After movies like Erin Brockovich and The Core, he played a relatively small role in The Missing (a farmhand to Cate Blanchett) who met a VERY gruesome death!!

Did you loan the said movie to a friend or something??

Or have you looked under your mattress, could it be hidden under there with you magazines collection?????! tongue.gif

Yes knows how that feeling

I don't enjoy having irresponsible people borrowing my stuff as well.

Actually have an Excel spreadsheet which keeps track of who borrows what!! nod.gif

Could you NOT request that your brother replaces it for you?

I just came back from the premiere of G.I "sucked balls" Joe and yes it sucked. You can't get a more generic and a more convenient action movie than this. I mean c'mon - there's the "bad guys" and there's the "good guys", oh and it's supposed to be a secret operation that only a few know about, duh. Then there goes the battle between them. I just realized it's the same plot as Monsters vs Aliens!

The action scenes were...generic. If this was released in 2000 or if I were 12, I would have left the hall feeling satisfied but I'm not. I thought the chase scene in Paris might be the saving grace but it brought even more cringing than before. And you can't get more coincidence and a more convenient plot than this pathetic movie. Everyone seems to be connected to one another, even between the bad and the good guys.

Acting was nowhere good, so was the script, so was the CGI and so was the action. Boo. And you thought TF2 was bad. 2/5

So... U wouldn't recommend going to the Imax to see it?? tongue.gif

During the weekend, managed to catch the following...

The Mummy Trilogy (BD)

The Mummy - Fun and entertaining movie. Magic, Thrills and Sand. Good fun.

The Mummy Return - Terrible history reference of ancient Egypt but still a passable movie. Pygmy Mummy.... okay...

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor - oh dear. Looks like the money Brendan Fraser had made is at an all time low, for him to comeback to the franchises in this bad BAD movie. The only people who had the good sense of NOT coming back are Stephen Sommers and Rachel Weisz. What was Jet Li and Datuk Michelle Yeoh think!!?

And it is rumored that Rob Cohen (the director of the third) is talk about The Mummy 4: Rise of the Aztec.... Run for the hills (that ALL I can say)

My thoughts is the same as you...but after thinking again...Mummy3 and Mummy1 is just as good, only thing is after so many mummy movies, I think we have had enough of them, thats why the third one fared badly, I think no. 4 is gonna do worst.
*
I think it is the BAD reference to history that gets to me for Mummy 2 & 3.

Example

In The Mummy 2, the Bracelet of Anubis was created during The Scorpion King's time... which was WAY (thousand plus years off) before the The Great Pyramid of Giza, The Temple of Karnak and The Temple of Abu Simbel were built, but interestingly, Alex wearing the bracelet was shown all this buildings as markers....

The Mummy 3, pointing the way to Shangri La, they had to use a blue diamond. The Chinese doesn't revere diamond, they revere Jade or Pearl. It would have been more correct if they use a luminous pearl (a pearl that glows in the dark) as a pointer for Shangri La rather then a diamond, and everything they use for The Emperor (Qin Shi Huang Ti) was just.... off?? (Master of the Five Elements indeed!!?). Also once they were AT Shangri La, they didn't explorer it????????

I really hope that that 4th movie DOESN'T get made. Really!!

Dogma

First half was wicked fun. Had the 'Good Omens' vibe going for it. But the second half, especially the climax, is a bit of an uninspired mess. The God in person in the movie is just so ineffective, and the characters suddenly seem a whole lot less interesting during the climax. Second half is still pretty good, but a letdown after the first half. Oh well... 4/5

You know what, you are the only OTHER person I know of whom had read the book, The Good Omen!! tongue.gif

I've not read any of Pratchett's work, but I've read that Gaiman tried writing his segments in Pratchett's style, and Pratchett Gaiman's style. I cant discern between the two, but the more morbid inventions are probably Gaiman. In any case its such a terrific book. I've only read it once, but its the kind of book I want to read every half year or so. Only reasons I havent been able to are time constraints and the big pile of books in my shelf I've read to read.

Anyway, my next last movies watched (lol) would most probably be The Untouchables, Gomorra, and Good Will Hunting. Trying to put off watching any movies because I have a professional actuarial exam next tuesday.
*
Oh, Malaysian read, just NOT The Good Omen!! (we have exception like Noob13!! smile.gif )

1) Dogma - U are right the 1st half is better then the 2nd half. Surprising how they cast Alanis Morrisette as GOD!!? smile.gif

2) I love how Gaiman and Pratchett actually capture the feel of The Omen movie, but twisted everything around. I luv the fact the an Arch Angel and a demon are drinking buddy. Also to them the grass is greener on the other side??! The vicious dog is NO longer vicious because of THE BOY'S upbringing (the old nature versus nurture argument)

3) Actually my favorite Gaiman story is issue 50 of The Sandman. PURE beauty.

4) Had always wanted to read Stardust the book. Have you had the chance to read it? Any good? (If you had read it)

5) LUV The Untouchables (still think it is one of Kevin Costner best work), not seen Gomorra, Think that Good Will Hunting is okay only.

6) Did you even get around to watch Akira Kurusawa's The Seven Samurai?

I liked it a lot, but I would recommend getting the graphic novel version. Charles Vess' art is just as gorgeous as Gaiman's writing.
I thought it was charming in parts, but nowhere near a worthy adaptation of the book.
*
Okay will lookup Stardust Charles Vess graphic novel the next time I'm in Kinokuniya. Is he (Charles Vess) still around. The last I heard he was seeking treatment for cancer...

Have you every read the stand alone 50th issue of The Sandman. If yes, what did you think?

1) Indeed. Alanis Morrisette was simply terrible. If they wanted God to be this innocent, sweet looking girl, then she simply didnt have the chops nor looks to pull it off.

2) The book is filled with so many wondrous characters and inventions, it's hard to think of anyone who doesn like it.

3) Sadly I've never read any of the Sandman comics.

4) Never read Stardust. I've only read American Gods, Good Omens, Neverwhere, and Anansi Boys. I liked American Gods upon finishing it, but I was left slightly underwhelmed. I think to really appreciate it one has to know the vast mythology and the american geography. The book has stuck with me though. I should read it again sometime. Anansi Boys shares a few characters with the serious American Gods, but thats where the similarities end because the tone is completely different. Thoroughly fun book. Neverwhere is just fantastic, my second favourite book after Good Omens.

5) It's been a long time since I saw The Untouchables, but I remember really liking it. I think De Palma's best is either Carlito's Way or Carrie.

6) Sadly this is one of those films I'm embarrassed to say I've not seen. I will... sooner or later. But why is Seven Samurai suddenly in the picture? lol

Btw kobe, you just didnt get Hitchhiker's Guide. tongue.gif Yes it's filled with holes... wormholes. One scene leads randomly to a very different next scene, and it doesnt need to make any sense whatsoever. That's the whole charm of the universe, like the awesome Infinite Improbability Drive.
*
1) smile.gif

2) Yes, it is a VERY good book. I couldn't put it down the first time I read it. I finished it in one or two sitting (reading into the wee hours of the morning)

3) U should. AT least read the 50th stand alone issue. The ending is both bitter and sweet and I will NOT elaborate more, in case you... case it out?? tongue.gif

4) I know he wrote American Gods, but never had an interest in it because of the word American (sorry if you are American!! tongue.gif), Good Omens (I've read), Neverwhere and Anansi Boys I didn't know he did those. More trips to Kinokuniya... *Sigh*

5) I kinda like his Mission Impossible too. And apparently he is talking about making The Untouchables: Capone's Rising.

6) I think it is probably in this thread where you admited that you just watched your first Kurosawa movie, and I recommended The Seven Samurai... Just following up, that's all, no biggie!! nod.gif

Later

I have the complete Sandman collection, and yes, "Ramadan" is one of the best stories.

(Although it does read a bit odd to Malaysian eyes. Harun al-Rashid willing to batal puasa during fasting month, with wine no less?  laugh.gif )

Well, that's Mr Gaiman's Point of View (POV), sort of the writer's prerogative I suppose. It's like in the 13th Warrior, when Antonio Banderas' character, Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan was offered mead after a battle, and his character decline stating that his religion does not allow him to drink substance that is fermented from fruits or vegetable. The Viking offerer started to laugh, and when asked why he laughed, he replied that mead is made from fermented honey, and as a response, Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan took the drink! Michael Crichton prerogative... I do miss Mr. Michael Crichton's work though....

I just finished watching District 9

In my humble opinion, it is the most original thing I've ever seen for a while!

I went through THE whole gamut of human emotions while watching this movie, repulsion, disgust, laughter, tears, disbelief etc....

Director Neill Blomkamp will be compared with the likes of Ridley Scott, which I think is unfair. I think he is Ridley Scott's equal, if NOT edgier!

I truly believe Neill Blomkamp and Peter Jackson had achieve the unbelievable, I think they had succeeded 3 things

1) They have developed a new GENRE

2) They proved that you don't need to spend an obscene amount of money in advertisement, to draw people to your movie

3) Make 2009 THE year District 9 was made

Many people have made references like, this movie is like Cloverfield or Dark City, and I say, it surpasses them IN SPADES.

This movie will proves that having a big budget and not storyline does not equal a successful movie.

This movie clearly states that if you have a good story, a good director and good actors (NOT big names, who knew Sidgorney Weaver, before Alien) you can make a definitive movie

There were several time in the movie that I was so replusived, that I FREAKED and wanted to leave the cinema, but it overpowered me, and I was glued to my seat!!

And then the scene with the robot suit happened. Mr Michael Bay, I don't care HOW MUCH MONEY you spent making Transformers 2, that scene ran circles around it.

That scene alone proves to me (dare I say it) that a live action movie of Robotech and Evangelion which DOESN'T suck is very VERY possible.

I do not want to write anymore. I don't want to hype anything (it does need it).

Go watch the movie

At the end of the movie, I felt like I was a little kid again, watching Alien in a dark cinema with my (cool) brothers. I didn't understand it, but when I was older and I watched it again, it hits me! (Yeah, yeah Quickfire, I'm ANCIENT)

Obsessed

Beyoncé Knowles is mean and scary....

I feel sorry for Ali Larter........ tongue.gif

Not quite sure why they made this movie, we already have Fatal Attraction and Basic Instinct!

Spirited Away

Still earth-shatteringly good. As far as animation films go, it is definitely up there with the best of Pixar and Disney.

The Untouchables

Very stylish and looks very nice, but there isnt much underneath. The script is deficient, with half-assed attempts at character development. Also, the the tone rubs me the wrong way. It is far too light for a film like this. The acting itself isnt that noteworthy. Sean Conney is pretty good, but his character is for me very inexplicable. Costner is serviceable, the script doesnt give him much and he doesnt push it either, but he gets better in the second half. It isnt just him, the whole second half of the movie is an improvement and makes for a very entertaining and satisfying last hour, mostly due to De Palma's deft work in setpieces, which is usual in his movies. The music by Morricone is really good, though at times I think there is too much music. Overall a good first half, and an immensely satisfying second half. 4/5

The staircase sequence was great. The setpieces are all great. And I like the movie.

Btw, Beyonce couldnt act for shit in Obsessed. I forgot about the movie right after I watched it.
*
Yeah, unfortunately, not all movies can be Untouchables and District 9.....

As for Beyoncé not quite sure why she feels like (she is NOT alone, Mariah Carrey, Whitney Houston etc) needs to conquer everything, music, movie, fashion etc!!

How MANY more millions does she need...... tongue.gif

Paul Blart: Mall Cop

*Sigh* I'm stuck with my DVD collection when I'm in KL (BD player is NOT in KL) and I have to say, it has been disappointing viewing of late.

Watched Obsessed on Monday evening and Paul Blart: Mall Cop on Tuesday....

The term "suck much" comes to mind.....

Whatever happened to Gilmore Madison productions (which gave us Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison and more recently 50 First Dates....)

It was a pain to watched

I was so numb by the movie, I couldn't get myself to lift up the remote control to switch it off.....

*Sigh* x 2

Will probably stick to my Alfred Hitchcock Presents TV series until the weekend!

UP (Disney/Pixer)

Watched it yesterday at Pavillion (3D)

Apart from CARS, Pixar has always done it for me, and UP is certainly "doing it"!

The simple HEART WARMING storyline, told VERY SINCERELY

I'm actually a little reluctant to use the word simple because the story structure is anything but.

I really recommend it to EVERYBODY on the face of this planet to watch this delightful movie.

You'll not regret it.

Still a huge fan of PIXAR. been watching them since Toy Story

Amen to that!! smile.gif

Did you enjoy the short story in front of UP?? wink.gif (Love the gung ho Stork)

Also Toy Story 3 is coming soon!

Now the scary thing is how they are going to top UP.

I know they (Pixar) put a lot of effort into getting the story right. What I also want to see is Incredible 2 (Imagine Jack Jack grown!!?! tongue.gif )

Here to Pixar. And many more great movie from them to come!

Hmmm... For me I have to say that Dreamwork's Kung Fu Panda came close to what Pixar does, just different. NOT their Madagascar though, i really REALLY cannot stand that!!

Added on August 23, 2009, 7:34 pmJust watched the following on BDs

Hollowman

I do miss Paul Verhoeven (Robocop, Starship Troopers). I have forgotten how much "nudity" there is in this. Was very surprise also that Rhona Mitra was actually in it!! (The neighbour whom Kevin Bacon likes to peep at, and eventually took his fantasies to the extreme). The CGI work is a little jaded now, but overall still watchable. I REALLY MISS Paul verhoeven!!!!

Top Gun

Ah, good old Mr Cruise, when he was still married to Mimi Rogers! The transfer to BD is impressive considering the age of the movie [23 yo]). A actually movie that does dogfighting seriously. Interesting fact that Meg Ryan was a support character in it and then became a big name!! Also, Mr Cruise CANNOT sing to save his life!! tongue.gif

Hellboy

Wow, wow, wow, wow. I never get sick of this movie. Am a fan of the comics. Was a little skeptical when they announce the movie. Am happy they made. When is Hellboy 3 coming out!! (With the same director PLEASE)
