the launch of the new intel chips are happening next year first quarter. Apple will most likely not bump up the speeds yet. Even if they do, its a difference of 200 mhz and a higher front side bus speed. one main reason for this is that they allowed 2.6 ghz speeds on mbp. If i were you, i would buy the 2.6 ones, it will definitely be able to run leopard smooth as smooth can be.

though so, dont take my word for it if you like waiting. The rumour of a 12'' macbook is a more trustworthy rumour than a new mbp

12" MB? Haha, that would be cute to own one. Nah, I prefer not to wait. Planning to get one on PIKOM's PC Fair in KLCC in Dec. smile.gif

Hmm.. instead of RM8k for a MBP,

why not spend RM4k on a MB for surfing, work etc.

and the remainder on a PC with a Radeon X2900 or 8800 series AGP... spending max RM3k. Almost top of the line gaming PC.

and still have RM1k to change graphics card in 4 years time.

ezralimm,

Ya know at first what you said seemed to make alot of sense. Why spend 8-9k on one mac notebook when u can spend on a mac notebook and a pc?

After some thinking however, I realized, whats the point of getting a mac if all im going to use it for are simple stuff like surfing?? might as well get a pc notebook that can save even more of my costs.

The main reason I'm getting a mac is because its the standard in the industry in my field now (multimedia). And a macbook with its average specs just won't take the processing abuse it will be going through (video editing, 3D rendering... bla bla bla).

If im going to spend that much on a mac, I'm going to take full advantage and make full use of it. But of course thats just me, maybe your solution may be just the right one for someone else out there.

Btw, don't dream too much. If you know what I meant. Rumor of 12" macbook or ultra-macbook pro with touch technology or whatever started since few years back. Now? Almost end of 2007. There's no actual "news" about that. Just Rumors and Rumors. If later on by next year (2008), there no 12" macbook, then don't be too upset lo. You will wait and wait forever. whistling.gif

PS: Just my thought, my speculation is probably in 2009. 2008 still too early for those touchscreen lappy wink.gif

ezralimm: your post made a lot of sense to me. I don't do much video rendering and the such, getting such an expensive notebook is quite a waste of money for me. For that, I rather get the black MB. With the new Santa Rosa version and new gfx card (which I heard is better than the GMA950), it's a better choice for my current situation smile.gif just slap in more RAM and I should be golden.

tf: yeah man, if you're in multimedia go for the MBP instead. Wanna get it together and chance for a discount? tongue.gif (highly doubt so though)

I totally agree.

If everyone in your field is using final cut, it's probably a good idea to get a mac.
But do note that for RM9k you could also get a very very high end PC.

With 10,000rpm Raptor HDDs for loading and for caching,
More than 1TB of space,
4GB ram
...and dual core2duo's.

For simple stuff like surfing, apple's are the best IMO.

Surfing on my small 12" 1Ghz ibook G4 is nicer than surfing on my windows notebook (with attached 1600x1200 22" screen!)

why?

1) Expose
2) expose
3) expose
4) reliability. browser doesnt crash as much. Java implementation very solid.

oh, you're into multimedia.

In that case, get the MB and a nice BIG screen to go with it. A colour calibration tool is also a must.

Shop around a little.

Im using a plain jane Samsung 226bw right now.

Colour accuracy and contrast of desktop monitors in general compared to notebooks is so so so much better. (that's the reason i got it in the first place, for photo editing)

After much consideration, I plan to ask my friend in the States to help me purchase a black MB and send it over here by UPS smile.gif

That way, I still manage to save around RM600. I could certainly use that to upgrade my RAM and get a sleeve for it.

Btw, apart from the adapter that is using a different head, is there any other differences from US Macbooks and Malaysia ones? Anyone knows the price for a new adapter?

It is better to buy a MBP 15" 2,2 Ghz with free upgrade to 3GB RAM for RM7499 from authorized apple shop
--OR--
buy the same MBP without any free upgrade (meaning 2GB ram only) for RM7099 from Maiself (forumer here).. anyone bought fr him. Good seller?

Is 2GB ram more than enuf.>> Will the 1GB additioanal Ram make alot of difference on a MBP

yea.. alot if you are into virtualization software or gaming in winxp/vista (bootcamp) or "pro" video/photoshop/3D editing. For normal usage, 2Gb is pretty enough. Just moderate I would say. wink.gif

erhmm... no problem la for me. Just legal issue here. If you are doing business or what, then it is better you get the ori vista. For home user, just get you-know-what-version. Who's care about it? Unless you really "support" ori la rolleyes.gif

What do you mean by that? Vista home is vista home. Or do you mean the service pack? hmm.gif Just get vista home or whatever and do the update via internet. wink.gif

Btw, I don't use vista. I prefer winxp more. Why? Cos' less space needed and less resource as well. If want eye-candy, i rather choose Leopard. I use windows just for gaming and programming in my macbook. So far so good, I don't have any problem with bootcamp cool2.gif In addition, I also use vmware to boot up the bootcamp drive.

Ahh, as I was closing the deal with my friend to help me purchase the MB I got quite unsure whether the MB will work in Malaysia.

First of all, there is the voltage and wattage difference. Will the adapter work with ours?

All in all, are there anything to look out for that I missed out? I don't wanna buy an MB from the US only to find out it doesn't work here or worse; potentially fries the MB sad.gif

Thanks biggrin.gif
