Sound is normal with UC6, I also have Almera Turbo changed to Michelin XM2+ the humming noise no more. Tyre more quiet and stronger side wall.

Weird that the noise disappeared with the Michelin XM2+ since the UC6 was reported to be silent with other vehicles. Perhaps it's the rim design of the Almera or something else that caused the humming sound on the Continental UC6. Tan Chong should have fitted other brands of tyres on the Almera if this humming noise is consistent with all Almera turbo models.

Seams like opposite for me:-
my wife city used XM2 the noise is damn loud but my insight used UC6 is so quite and comfort. Maybe different size tyres or different car have different results.

Tan Chong used UC6 could be to meet the made in malaysia criteria. xm2 from thailand right?

Yes, it's surely weird and surely there is an explanation to this? UC6 is supposed to be a quiet tyre and sounds perfectly quiet on most cars ie. Honda, Toyota etc. But UC6 on Nissan Almera has humming sound, all the cars. I'm surprised this phenomenon is not "news" as most new owner of the Nissan ALmera doesn't make too much noise and accepts it. Perhaps those few critical and fussy drivers which are more sensitive to these sound like me will notice the humming sound while others won't be bothered or even don't know if the sound is actually there since they don't pay attention. I suspect it's either the size of tyres, or different rim design on the Almera which caused this humming, or something else I don't know.

I am not sure if Tan Chong used UC6 to meet the Made in Malaysia criteria. I don't know if XM2 is from Thailand. I'm not really knowledgeable on tyres and don't do survey unless I intend to get a new set of tyres.

As long as the wheel alignment is not corrected and properly adjusted quickly the woong woong sound would persist until the moment the tyre is replaced/removed.

Any new tyre of any brand or series would 'resolve' the annoying noise immediately, only to repeat the irritating incident IF wheel alignment correction is not acted upon.

Thank for the post. So there is another possibility which is tyres out of alightment. Anyway I've yet to set an appointment with the service centre to bring my vehicle the Continental tyre shop to have them check the condition. Need to take one day leave for this. I suspect it's the tyre which is causing the humming sound as the same model which I tested also showed this same sound. We will see.

Manufacturers would go out of their way to earn little buck or two here and there.

My brother bought a vios many years back (its a vios J btw). Everyone said Toyota is good, trusted but dare I tell you that even Toyota cuts corner. Service in Toyota SC, alignment done by them and yet the tyre are worn unevenly on all 4 sides. Toyota kept denying denying and until some date, my brother suddenly brought back 4 pieces of new tyres from SC (he has changed to Michelin XM2). I cant remember but I feel like its GoodYear GT3.

Update. Nissan service center arranged to have the tyres checked at a Continental outlet yesterday. Conducted all the necessary checks which include balancing, checking of thickness of rubber, test driving the car 3 times after dismantling and installing the tyres and swapping them around. But to no avail, all fail and the humming sound is still there. In other words, the sound is said to be normal on the UC6 and it's not the tyres that are defective.

So, as it stands now, the humming sound is not due to the Continental UC6 tyres or the wheel bearing after being checked at the tyre outlet and service centre. So now, the poor soundproofing of the vehicle is blamed. confused.gif

I've written Continental Malaysia on this matter to seek clarification while waiting for the report from the Continental tyre outlet where the checks on the tyres were performed earlier to be made available. I asked if the humming sound from the UC6 fitted as standard on the new Nissan Almera is considered to be normal, is there another Continental tyre that will not show this same humming sound.

The Continental tyre outlet notified that there were many other owners who complained on this humming sound as they went to their outlet before this. The issue remains unresolved and the tyre shop also can't advise if another type of tyre will be completely silent on the vehicle as they have not tried.

So,wheel alignnment was not measured let alone making required adjustment?

Wheel alignment not done so I presume it's not a factor. Things that were done:-

1. Balancing of all tyres
2. Checking of thickness of rubber with some kind of needle
3. Checking and adjusting tyre pressure. Tyre pressure was reduced as the current one was found to be a bit high
4. Rotated front tyres to rear and vice versa, in zig-zag position.

All the above did nothing to the humming sound which is still present. In summary, a failed attempt, maybe just a show by the outlet since they already knew the humming sound could not be resolved after many other owners of the new Nissan Almera also went to their outlet to complain on the same thing.

So the cause is not due to the tyres which have been checked to be normal, and it's not due to the wheel bearing. So now the blame is on the poor soundproofing of the car which caused the humming sound to be audible. puke.gif

I'm still waiting to hear a case of any owner swapping the UC6 tyres out for another tyre on the Nissan Almera 1.0 VLT and found the humming sound to be completely gone. So far, there is none.

As I suggested earlier on, it IS wheel alignment related.

This humming noise would get louder and louder as the days go by until and unless one (or more) of the affected tyre(s) are replaced new.

After resolving humming noise problem temporarily with new tyre(s) replacement, history will repeat by itself as long as the wheel (mis)alignment is not corrected.

You sound very confident to say it IS wheel alignment related although it is supposition on your part where you could say it MAY be wheel alignment related.

Based on the condition of the vehicle and my experience, it is highly unlikely it's a wheel alignment issue as it does not show any symptoms of a bad wheel alignment apart from the humming sound from the tyres.

Would like to check, for people who have new UC6 tyres on the vehicle, is there a humming sound from the tyres when the vehicle is traveling between speeds say 20 to 100 km/h? The sound is like "woong woong" low rumbling sound like an aeroplane sound.

As mentioned in the 1st page and above, wheel bearing checked at service centre to be in good condition.
