Feel free to ask me anything regarding this topic.

Strongly recommend to experience this at least once in your lifetime

Useful tips:
1. Season is from September to April
2. Recommended location: Tromsø outskirts. City has too much light pollution. Northern Finland, Iceland, Svalbard, central scandinavia also possible
3. Spend to go on a tour that offers professional photos for memories. The last thing you want are worthless photos from all the money spent and suffering sub-zero temperatures
4. Stay for a week. Weather is difficult to predict and is usually the biggest obstacle
5. Moon cycles when it is new moon is when sky is the darkest
6. Peak of 11 year solar cycle is expected in 2025. Next year or 2025 is still a good time
7. If on tight budget, book flights, hotels and buy winter clothes way in advance
8. Download aurora apps. Aurora Reach seems the most useful to me
9. Use long shutter time, wide aperture and/or night mode when taking photos
10. Photos will look better than in real life, be prepared for that!

You’re really lucky, I was in tromso 2 weeks ago and barely got to see anything after spending hours in -17 temperatures

Hated the whole experience

It really depends on luck. My tour guide said I had really good conditions. Clear skies, decent KP. Also caught glimpse of slightly more reddish aurora.

Best part was the show started just when reached, so didn't even need to wait

That forecast means it is just too early. Green = low chance, orange = medium chance and red = high chance.
The heatmap will move westwards though. My forecast was something like the attached, except it had an additional red oval within the orange oval

Research. Solar cycle, moon cycle, local geography, how long the nights are, find good local guides that can bring you places with least light pollution.

Last but not least, pure luck

Probably any middle eastern airlines to Oslo via Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Doha and then SAS to Tromsø, Norway

You must be prepared to spend a bit on a tour that takes you out of Tromsø for the best results

Tromsø for sure. Northern lights depends a lot on luck as well but next winter is probably the end of the 11 year solar cycle. Go during new moon so sky is pitch dark
*
Iceland also not bad. Was there during 2018, you can even see northern lights at city center.

what is the cheapest way to see it? which country? which flight? which hotel?

Some useful tips I learned:

Need to plan for a week's stay. Some days might have bad conditions due to weather or just not enough activity in the sky. Food and hotel can save if on tight budget. There are cheaper hotels n eating options.

Recommend not to save on good winter jacket and booking a tour with one that can take professional photos with some wow factor. Otherwise will just get pics from mobile phone which isn't great

If you get one of the tours, they can take professional photos of it with DSLR and tripod. Otherwise it's pretty difficult to get a good photo just using mobile phone

The other challenge is that the tour might not coincide with the northern lights

not sure if i replied .

i spent around £3k to travel from UK for almost a week to Tromso and Svalbard

go by tour is better (they help to take professional photos which is a big plus). if rent car you need to do research where to go

when coming back from the tour got moose and reindeer on the road, and tunnel closed for road works for an hour

Thanks for sharing. A few questions

1. How is Iceland for sightseeing Vs Scandinavia?
2. Which tours with photographer do you recommend? And cost?
3. How much to budget for a 1 week trip?
4. How cold is it?

1. Prefer Iceland for sightseeing, but Tromsø for northern lights
2. I just search on viator and pick the one with the best reviews
3. I fly from UK, paid around £3k for everything for 1 week stay including trip to Svalbard
4. -5 to -10C in December

1. Meaning that the northern lights isn't as visible in Iceland compared to Norway? If I specifically want to see the lights, I should go to Norway?
2. £3k for everything including accomodation and food? Or just transport and guide/photographer?
3. Is this a nightly event? Will I be able to see the northern lights every night? Or will there be some nights where it's just pitch dark?
4. Is December a good time?
5. -5 to -10 doesn't seem too bad. I was under the assumption that Scandanavia was freezing in winter?
6. Are these sites generally packed with tourists?
7. How is 2025 better? How would 2024 be worse? Are the lights brighter in 2025 vs 2024?

Thanks!

Trying to saving up, but don't know if I can even afford it with the dumping RM.

Another question,

1. The photographers use actual cameras, and print onto film?
2. How big are the groups for these tours?

1. You can see northern lights in Iceland as well. If you are lucky, you can see it even in Denmark or Scotland as well. I recommend Tromsø, Norway specifically because of the local topology so the chances of having clear skies is higher, which is usually the biggest factor in determining if you can see it clearly.
2. £3k for everything (tours, flights, hotels, food) for 2 person for about a week. Btw, don't bother to bring cash to Norway, it's practically useless
3. It's not a nightly event. There is a few apps you can use to check the kp reading. Some people might go for a week and see nothing, and some might be passing by for a few hours and can see a fantastic display. It is a natural phenomenon so it hugely depends on luck as well
4. October to February is generally the best times as these months have much longer night time. I recommend that you check the moon cycles as well, so better to go when there is no full moon, so if you can get a very dark sky
5. Coastal areas, even in north Scandinavia is not too bad. But if you go inland especially Finland, it can drop to -20 or lower
6. No, because if you take a tour it goes to the outskirts to some remote place. The guides bring people to different beaches so you don't have multiple tourist vans going to the same place.
7. There is a 11 years solar cycle, if not mistaken after 2024 the chances of seeing it goes down a lot until the next cycle.

Hey sorry to bother again, some more questions

1. Just want to confirm that Malaysians do not need to apply for any visa to enter Norway for stays less than 91 days? So, no need a Schegen Visa or anything, just show up with passport is enough? Will likely be flying in from the UK
2. Did you buy travel insurance?
3. What else did you do for ~7 days besides Northern Lights tour?
4. How many days did you spend in Norway? and what locations did you visit? How many days in Tromso specifically?
5. How many tours did you book in Viator? One for each day in Norway? Or one tour for all days? the wander own tour starts at 18:00. What to do during day time?
6. If I book a tour for a night and don't see the lights. Do I book again for the next night?
7. Also, wandering owl tour charges 650NOK for high res pictures. Is it recommended to pay for those
8. Why no need to bring any NOK cash? What about Food
9. What winter clothing did you bring? Trying to see what I can skimp on for lighted luggage, the wandering owl tour says that they do provide clothing and shoes
10. Stay at hotel or hostel?

Thanks!

1. Don't need visa
2. No
3. Reindeer tour, dog sledding, souvenir shopping. cable car
4. I did 3 days Tromso, 3 days Svalbard
5. A few, i did 2 towns so i did 4 tours in total with some days with no tours to rest
6. Check the northern lights app when the time is near. You might want to book a second tour if you are not lucky the first time
7. Yes, if you want professionally taken photos like in the first post of this thread
8. Don't bother with cash. It's all electronic/card payment. Food you have to settle ownself normally. refreshments on tour are just snacks
9. Most tour do provide, but you would still need to bring a good winter jacket at least
10. Hotel

dig the views, its been in my bucket for the longest of time but what actually to do there? like its below zero most of the time.

is it like everytime the night falls, open app and monitor and hope can see or how lol

some of the not so straight forward things as ive been reading around for years but havent pulled the trigger. because in a dilemma. if "most" of the countries around there can "see" these lights might as well get to better cities. and flying there these days arent cheaper

btw, there's one reindeer tour worth going. Reindeer stew was pretty good!

Reindeer sled was not that fun as dog sledding, dog sledding is more tiring though

Thanks for the info.

1. Which reindeer tour was it? And where to find the stew?
2. Any decent places for Norwegian trout/salmon?
3. Any recommendations on what to do in Svalbard or recommended tours compared to Tromso?
4. Which card would you recommend? BigPay or Wise? At a glance, it seems that wise has better rates. I'm thinking of pre-loading up some GBP in Wise, and then keep a couple hundred GBP worth of NOK cash just in case. Is this a good idea?
5. Would it be worth it to also go for northern lights tour in Svalbard in addition to Tromso?

You are lucky to be able to watch the northern lights

I was in NZ last year, there also have Southern Light but couldn't see it

2 weekends ago I was in Iceland. Joined a tour but also couldn't see

1. I did this one, comes with the stew. The sledding was very mild:
https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Re...ern_Norway.html

2. I didn't look for fish

3. Svalbard northern lights tour was somewhat disappointing. Chances to see northern lights is less than Tromso. Dog sledding was fun though!

4. No idea, I am using a UK bank card

5. Probably not. But if you want to experience 24 hours sunshine or darkness with a chance of polar bear, then definitely yes

Southern lights more difficult to see than northern lights

Oct to Jan is probably the best to see northern lights. March is quite late already but can still see if you are lucky.

Also Tromsø has the best chance, better than Iceland or even Svalbard. I do like Iceland for sightseeing though, it has more things to experience

Interesting because it is purplish/reddish. Reminds me of the one I saw from Svalbard. Wonder if looking south gives a reddish/purplish glow and looking north is more greenish

Not only about touch up. It's about our eyes are not good enough.

The human eye is not as sensitive to these wavelengths as our cameras are.

Using a long exposure on your camera allows more light into the lens, providing you with the colours that you see in photographs and videos.

Here's a comparison.

I loved Reindeer stew though. I also tried whale and seal

Iceland food was pretty good for me. There's this lamb burger at the gas station that was absolutely fantastic!

Of course no nasi lemak and Malaysian food though

I would go back to Iceland again. Absolutely love the frozen waterfall, hot springs and glacier lake. I did glacier hiking previously but never visited the ice cave.

Also remember the wind at Snæfellsnes was crazy

Idk I feel NZ has pretty comparable scenery compared to Iceland lol. Didn't impress me that much.

Doesn't help that I was with a tour and it was the worst tour experience ever. Do not ever engage BP Holiday if anyone ever wants to get a tour package lol. Best is to DIY self drive or get local tours.

Ice cave was definitely the highlight of my Iceland trip.

I stayed at Scandic Ishavshotel , as it is near to the meeting point of a lot of the tour operators. Just make sure you know where your meeting point is for your tour and how to get there.

Keep in mind most tours will arrive back late at night, often past midnight

Keep in mind that northern lights viewing depends on your luck mostly.

To increase your chances, I suggest booking a tour that will bring you out of the city. Cloudy and bright skies will severely reduce your chances. For the same reason best to arrange a tour when there is no moon light in the sky as well

Best of luck in your hunt!

This person said the same about Finland too. unsure.gif
QUOTE
Thinking of moving to Finland?
If you’re from Asia, you might want to rethink that. Finland is beautiful, but living there can be a real struggle (speaking from an almost 4 years Malaysian living in Finland).

Here are 8 reasons why you should NEVER live in Finland:
1. The weather will destroy your soul

Winter lasts 6 months. Temperatures drop to -20°C. The sun disappears for weeks. If you’re from a warm country, be ready for seasonal depression & wearing 5 layers just to buy groceries.

2. Say goodbye to spicy food (and good food in general)
Finnish food is mild. If you love Indian curries, Thai spice, or Japanese ramen, prepare to suffer. Even black pepper is considered spicy here. Want soy sauce? That’ll cost you triple the price.

3. Finns are polite but distant
No small talk. No casual visits. No eye contact on public transport. If you’re used to warm, social cultures, Finland’s silent treatment will feel like rejection but it’s just the Finnish way.

4. Everything is EXPENSIVE
A meal? €15. A bus ticket? €4.50 (HK$40). Haircut? €30+ (RM150). Housing? Don’t ask. Oh, and taxes will eat a huge chunk of your salary. Hope you like budgeting.

5. The work culture is different
No overtime. No hustle culture. No late-night work emails. Sounds nice, right? Well, if you’re ambitious, Finland might feel too relaxed. Career growth moves slowly here.

6. Dating is like a business deal
I didn’t experience this my self but heard lots from friends . No dramatic love confessions. No Korean romance. Finns are direct and efficient in dating.

7. Learning Finnish will break your brain
15 grammatical cases. Words change depending on use. House is talo, but in the house is talossa. From the house? Talosta. And that’s the easy part.

8. Nature is beautiful, but it wants to kill you
In summer: Mosquitoes attack. In winter: Ice makes walking dangerous. In Lapland: Reindeer block your car. Oh, and in the north? There’s total darkness for months.

Finland is clean, safe, and has great quality of life.
But if you’re from Asia, the cultural shock is real.
Would you survive in Finland? Let me know in the comments!

Experience 24/7 total darkness (in Svalbard). Reindeer stew was really good

Dog sledding was really fun. This is what it looks like at noon in the winter:

Lol, not possible

But seriously, it is an experience of a lifetime. Not always the case to get to see the lights, many people get disappointed

If you like winter activities, can do skiing, snowboarding or just have snowball fights

Or visit the ice hotel (which was my original plan, but my other half don't want to sleep on a bed made of ice)

Nope. I was 3 days in Tromsø, 3 days in Svalbard: https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=5395991&hl=

Basically in Tromsø, I spent 1 day at a Reindeer farm reindeer, feeding reindeer, eating reindeer stew and doing reindeer sleeding (which was very mild)
Then 1 night to catch the northern lights, and 1 day to explore the town. I went during Christmas, so it was more festive with a lot of nicely decorated shops

In Svalbard, I spent 1 day dog sledding (which was way more fun), 1 night catching the northern lights (which wasn't as good as Tromsø) and 1 day just hanging around the town (which was basically 1 street)
Despite the extremely small town, I was quite surprised they had really nice places to eat. I tried whale and seal meat (even their burgers was excellent). Oh, and they had the huskey cafe as well which is where the retired sledding dogs "work" after retiring

DSLR with tripod will get you professional pics. iPhone with long exposure time is fairly decent if can hold still. But it is below 0, freezing and unless your iPhone has a tripod, it is better to get a pro with DSLR

This is sample pic taken with my old pixel 6 phone

Indeed dslr yield better picture. I was just disappointed that you can’t see it with your human eye

You can still see it with human eye, but it's not vividly green like in the photos. It looked more like silver and somewhat glowing.

Then once you take a photo, you will go "oh wow", that looks way better

If only my tripod didn't break because of the strong wind or else i could have capture more lights and stars

Nice! Got the reddish hue which is nicer.

Tromso I had mostly greenish hue. Svalbard I got the reddish hue, but didn't really take much photos there (was quite cloudy)
