Thinking of moving to Finland?
If you’re from Asia, you might want to rethink that. Finland is beautiful, but living there can be a real struggle (speaking from an almost 4 years Malaysian living in Finland).
Here are 8 reasons why you should NEVER live in Finland:
1. The weather will destroy your soul
Winter lasts 6 months. Temperatures drop to -20°C. The sun disappears for weeks. If you’re from a warm country, be ready for seasonal depression & wearing 5 layers just to buy groceries.
2. Say goodbye to spicy food (and good food in general)
Finnish food is mild. If you love Indian curries, Thai spice, or Japanese ramen, prepare to suffer. Even black pepper is considered spicy here. Want soy sauce? That’ll cost you triple the price.
3. Finns are polite but distant
No small talk. No casual visits. No eye contact on public transport. If you’re used to warm, social cultures, Finland’s silent treatment will feel like rejection but it’s just the Finnish way.
4. Everything is EXPENSIVE
A meal? €15. A bus ticket? €4.50 (HK$40). Haircut? €30+ (RM150). Housing? Don’t ask. Oh, and taxes will eat a huge chunk of your salary. Hope you like budgeting.
5. The work culture is different
No overtime. No hustle culture. No late-night work emails. Sounds nice, right? Well, if you’re ambitious, Finland might feel too relaxed. Career growth moves slowly here.
6. Dating is like a business deal
I didn’t experience this my self but heard lots from friends . No dramatic love confessions. No Korean romance. Finns are direct and efficient in dating.
7. Learning Finnish will break your brain
15 grammatical cases. Words change depending on use. House is talo, but in the house is talossa. From the house? Talosta. And that’s the easy part.
8. Nature is beautiful, but it wants to kill you
In summer: Mosquitoes attack. In winter: Ice makes walking dangerous. In Lapland: Reindeer block your car. Oh, and in the north? There’s total darkness for months.
Finland is clean, safe, and has great quality of life.
But if you’re from Asia, the cultural shock is real.
Would you survive in Finland? Let me know in the comments!
