Did anyone from Penang experiencing slow internet speed since yesterday? It’s taking ages to load websites and social networking apps are also significantly slower than usual. 300mbps speed felt like 3mbps 😑

454.4KiB/s or 3.72Mbit/s is damn slow in 2024.

ADSL2 on old copper telephone line can theoretically reach 20+Mbit/s.

That is crazy slow. Can you try on a well seeded public torrent? I usually use linux ones for testing usually Centos.

I'm assuming you know how torrent works so, for testing, don't use jack sparrow stuff where everybody hits and runs.

If there aren't any forms of blocking, you will get full speed. Take a note of your current speed since 4G/5G tends to fluctuate more.

Varies from 10Mbps to 1Gbps (500+500.)

Yeah, torrents can't be fully blocked so telcos just make it bad enough that you don't even want to do the download. Imagine GTA6 at 3.72Mbps. LOL. But anyway that's not a good test with a public torrent.

Speed test on torrent is pointless. If blocked, it will be 0kB/s. If throttled, it will be below 100kB/s. This is not throttled, so whatever you get from fast.com bandwidth test, that's the speed you'll get.

Torrents are good for testing max speed and stressing the router but you gotta use the right torrent. I believe when ppl here say blocked, they mean throttled cos you can't fully block all torrents.

fast.com, I think most ppl here smart enough not to use except when want to show off impossible speeds or to confuse noobs.

Note that this is on 1Gbps ethernet. LOL

What speed do you get from fast.com?

Hi andrekua2,
I read back your post history and I am leaning towards a physical infrastructure problem.

You mentioned you get frequent disconnect and then your ONU will have LOS.
All of these point of a fault in the ONU itself or the fiber.

What ONU are you using? Make and model?
How old is your ONU?
Is it possible for you to login and read the input power of the fiber in dBm?

HUAWEI... I think it was 3-4 years old (the onu was replaced when I finally upgraded to 100mbps). I dont think it was hardware problem since it recover by itself most of the time. It was still okay before the free upgrade to 300mbps. Maybe I get 1 or 2 LOS every month or two. However, lately I have been a lot of LOS in a single month. Last month I get like 5-6 times. It is annoying because it happened during the time we are at home. I checked with myunifi and the problem lies with TM. I also ruled out sabotage since there is just one row of houses here.

I think I will wait until March or April for my contract to end and move to 5G. I think the past 2 years with Unifi has been up and down. At first it was reddit.. then there was problem with Iqiyi being slow. Even when my son tried the 5G, he said Roblox load faster and less laggy.

Have you file a formal complain with TM?
You can straight up ask for a new ONU and see if it helps. Just give the reason your ONU frequently get a LOS. It should be free.
When they are at your house, ask for a fiber reading and post it here.

You paid for the service, don't let them get away with it.
The Huawei is TM's property. Ask for a new one.

Have you checked from Unifi website and list your area as affected?

If not, there is a high possibility TM did nothing actually.

Technically there are 2 failure mode for ONU
1. The clock drift too much and it transmit outside the BWmap. The OLT detect this as Rogue ONU and shut it down.
2. The optic is degraded and loses its performance.

Both condition will get worse overtime, exactly like what you are facing.
Both condition also will recover by itself, until it dies again.
FEC might help it work for sometime, until it cannot anymore.

You said the line is slow even when it works, could be FEC in action.

Like I said, ask for a new one. It cost nothing to you.
Why you want to pay for degraded service and not even complain to TM?

BTW. Just sharing. Previously my 5ghz speed seems very hard to above 300mb. After that found out because of the frequency set in router. I set it to 40hz previously. After changed to 80hz now can I easily get above 400mb
