Ok..
My concern was that the Dvico was using the Sigma Designs chip. There is a known in this chipset. When you guys get your source of movies, there are many instances that during the ripping, muxing process, the flag is not properly set as HD (720p onwards shd be HD). If this happens, it is known that the Sigma chip then applies some kind of colour space processing and messes up the colour coordinates and changes the brightness of 3 of the 6 colours. What happens is some colours become much brighter and some become darker.
I saw this phenomenon when I 1st calibrated the WDTV some time ago. It messes up the colours. The fix was to ensure that the HD content is correctly flagged in the file (there is way of forcing this, need to check AVS forum). However, the WDTV (which uses the Sigma chipset) messes up colours even when the flag is set as HD.
The Dvico that I calibrated did not mess up the colours as long as the content is flagged as HD. This is good news. In fact, I can confirm that the Dvico does not mess up any colours at all (as long as it is flagged as HD)! This is important for a media player. The AC Ryan seems to mess up the "green" primary but does not do much to the rest.
I need to verify if the Dvico handles unflagged HD content wrongly like all Sigma based media players. My next trip to podrunner's house I will verify that...
On another positive note, the Dvico behaved very well in terms of grayscale as well. How this impacts you is that you get a nice "pop" and good shadow details as long as your display is capable. We do not want media players to mess up our videos.
There are differences to media players. A lot of people just buy the stuff and do not seem to understand why the Dvico is expensive, this is one of the reasons.
Sorry for the long winded reply.
one main factor I can think of = colorspace.. HD movies recorded in REC601 (SD) instead of the proper REC709 (HD)
as for DVICO being expensive, maybe the firmware thing that they are doing seems better (to justify their higher costs) but no way I'm accepting that their PCB board hardware costs 4 times more than WDTV.. sorry I'm from electronics industry.. after seeing their fake DVICO comparisons, I don't see how it their electronics and hardware costs more than a PS3..
