Two-month engineering run for ART fulfils objective of gathering necessary data for prototype zero-emission vehicle

KUCHING, Nov 1: The two-month engineering run for the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) has fulfilled its objective of gathering the necessary data for the prototype zero-emission vehicle.

According to a press release issued today, the focus of the engineering run, which was conducted at the Isthmus in September and October, was to gather technical data with emphasis on the ART vehicle’s movement guidance system and the hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system.

“The data will serve as essential input for the ongoing design phase of the ART vehicle before it enters into the mass production stage.

“The engineering run, which was launched by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on Sept 6, covered more than 5,400km.

“The engineering run will continue until early November before proceeding with Stage 2 of the proof-of-concept (POC) exercise,” read the press release.

During the engineering run, more than 80 groups of federal and State government agencies and various stakeholders from the private sector and non-governmental organisations were given the opportunity to take test rides on the prototype ART vehicle.

“As for the POC exercise, it will be conducted on a 3-kilometre stretch of the dedicated lane built between two roundabouts along the Kuching-Samarahan Expressway.

“This stretch will form a section of what will become the permanent ART dedicated double lane built for the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project’s Blue Line.”

Meanwhile, on Tuesday (Oct 31), Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin visited the construction site of the ART dedicated lane to get the latest updates on the work progress as well as preparations for the POC exercise, which is scheduled to be held sometime in November.

“Briefing the Minister during the visit were chief executive officer of Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd (Sarawak Metro) Mazli Mustaffa and representatives from Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak as well as the contractor.

“Also present were General Manager of Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) Datu Abdul Hadi Datuk Abdul Kadir and the senior management of Sarawak Metro.”

The press release further noted that on the development of the site for the POC exercise, as of October, the physical progress of infrastructure works was approximately 78 per cent completed.

“It is anticipated that the dedicated lane will be substantially completed by mid-November, after which preparations for the POC exercise site will begin with the road marking works and calibration works for the ART.

“This POC exercise will evaluate the feasibility of the prototype unit for the final design of the ART vehicle and the fact that it will be carried out on the actual alignment.

“Similar to the engineering run, the POC exercise will not be open to the public, although relevant stakeholders will be invited to take test rides on the prototype ART vehicle during the POC exercise period.”

Additionally, it highlighted that the ART is the backbone of the KUTS project, which aims to modernise public transportation and ease traffic congestion in Greater Kuching.

“The KUTS project, which is under the purview of the Ministry of Transport Sarawak, will be implemented, operated and maintained by Sarawak Metro, a wholly owned subsidiary of SEDC.

“Covering a total distance of 70 kilometres, Phase 1 of the KUTS project involves the development of the Blue Line, Red Line and Green Line, which are scheduled to begin passenger service in stages, starting from the fourth quarter of 2025.

“Under Phase 1 of the KUTS project, the Blue Line will be from Rembus in Kota Samarahan to Hikmah Exchange in the city centre; the Red Line, from Kuching Sentral to Pending; and the Green Line, from Pending to Damai.” — DayakDaily

Should be ver reasonable. This is taking in the fact that currently the state is subsidizing bus fare. An 1hr 15mins express bus trip cost just RM1. This initiative started few years back resulted in significant surge in bus ridership.

That's why it is a Proof of Concept

Seems like CNA was given access by Sarawak Metro and the Sarawak government to cover KUTS.

Sarawak’s first ART line to be completed end of 2025

user posted image

KOTA SAMARAHAN (Dec 6): The first Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system line in the state is expected to be ready by the end of 2025, said Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin.

He said this first route for ART which is a lidar (light detection and ranging) guided articulated bus system for urban passenger transport, will be called the Blue Line running from Rembus to Riveria over a distance of 27.6 kilometres (km) and it may start operation in early 2026.

Speaking to reporters after inspecting the construction project here today, he said two other routes, the Red Line connecting Kuching Sentral with Pending over 12.3km and the Green Line from Pending to Damai in Santubong is 30km long.

“Construction of all lines involved is under the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) will be completed by the end of 2027 and the three lines will be operational in 2028.

According to him, for the time being, ART is undergoing Proof Of Concept (POC) which began since arriving from China in September and during the period, it has been tried by more than 2,500 passengers.

“Feedback obtained from riders was extremely good and by the end of this month, all feedback received will be submitted to the factory manufacturing the system in China,” he said.

Lee said each line for ART will also be complemented with Transit Signal Priority (TSP) which gives priority to ART train at traffic junctions.

“Even though ART can operate without a driver, we will still be providing one as a safety measure,” he said. – Bernama

S’wak Transport Minister: Severe penalties for traffic rule offenders along ART route
BY MATTHEW UMPANG ON DECEMBER 6, 2023, WEDNESDAY AT 5:43 PM

KUCHING (Dec 6): State Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin has called on the public to adhere to traffic regulations along the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) route once it is fully operational.

According to Lee, the ART system which will operate under the Transit Signal Priority system (TSP) has its own set of rules.

“Our ART system employs TSP, where the ART is granted priority at traffic light intersections, ensuring all lights turn green upon its approach.

“Despite its autonomous operation, a human driver will be present and remain vigilant, overseeing safety considerations.

“Should a vehicle disregard the traffic lights on its route, the law will be enforced, potentially resulting in severe penalties,” he stressed.

He said this to the press during his visit to the proof of concept (POC) training site for ART at La Promenade Mall in Kota Samarahan today.

In assuring the public of the ART system’s safety measures, Lee explained that the ART would be meticulously monitored, especially at traffic light intersections.

“As the vehicle approaches, its speed automatically decreases, and the human driver is ever-present to address any unforeseen circumstances,” he said.

Battery backups would be provided should the traffic lights be affected by power outage or technical issues, he added.

On the progress of the ART prototype POC, Lee said it had covered a distance of 6,000 kilometres since the POC period, including its initial phase in China.

“Over 2,500 people have experienced the ART prototype, providing valuable feedback. Sarawak Metro will compile all the data to be sent to the ART manufacturing facility.

“Modifications and improvements will be made to adapt the ART for the state, ensuring it remains contemporary,” said Lee.

The ART which is set to operate on three routes has the Blue Line, the Red line and the Green Line.

The Blue line, spanning 27.6km, is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by late 2025 and to be operational in early 2026.

The Red Line, covering 12.3km from Kuching Sentral to Pending, and the Green Line, a 30km stretch from Pending to Damai, are both part of the Kuching City Transport System (KUTS), slated for full completion in 2027.

Lee hinted that all the three-route project might be fully operational by 2028.

Community leaders: ART potential long term solution to ease Kuching’s traffic congestion (Video)
By Jude Toyat on December 7, 2023

KUCHING (Dec 7): Sarawak’s pursuit for a sustainable solution to its escalating traffic challenges has taken a promising turn with the advent of the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system.

This was voiced out by the local community leaders interviewed by The Borneo Post after a special ride on the ART smart tram along the Kuching-Samarahan Expressway today.

Sarawak Premier’s political secretary Kho Teck Wan said the ART system has the potential as a beacon of hope in alleviating traffic congestion.

“In the long run, this would perhaps replace some vehicles and reduce traffic congestion,” she said after her third ride on the ART smart tram here today.

She emphasised three pivotal advantages that position the ART system as a potential solution.

“They actually had a dedicated route just for this ART, so they would not impact any other vehicles that are traveling in the same direction.

“With sensors, when they go through the traffic light, when the ART is coming, the traffic light will turn green for the ART, technically being faster than the rest of the traffic.

“This is the first hydrogen-powered ART outside of China, and we are the only one here in Malaysia because of our reputation in researching and producing hydrogen. We save the environment as well,” she said.

However, Kho acknowledged the need to address the feeder bus systems to become more seamless to ensure the overall success of the ART project.

Kampung Rantau Panjang Batu Kawa village head Putit Omar also voiced similar optimism about the ART system.

“It’s really good considering the current traffic situation, everywhere is congested, and with the presence of the ART, it can alleviate the congestion,” he said after his first ride.

Putit emphasised the ART system’s potential to save time and enhance safety for those commuting along its route, including in Samarahan.

He noted among features of the ART smart tram in which he found beneficial is the spacious interior, providing comfort even for standing passengers.

“My suggestion for improvement would be to enhance the comfort further, as well as add more lanes for the ART, for example to places like Batu Kawa, known for traffic jams. That would be great,” he said.

Meanwhile, Hui Sing community leader Kapitan Tan Kun Gee expressed hope that the ART system would help alleviate the recent surge in traffic jams.

“I think Sarawak is doing a good job because now, for the past 10 to 20 years, actually, we don’t have much traffic in Kuching, so seldom traffic jams.

“But now, we are going to have a lot of traffic jams, so probably this ART will help to reduce the traffic jam,” he said.

While foreseeing potential benefits for the public, Tan raised concerns about possible charges and suggested considerations for age-related concessions.

He also addressed specific concerns about the ART system’s approach to flyovers, emphasising the need for clarity on whether the system would utilise overpasses or underpasses.

“My question is that when they reach traffic light or roundabout or flyover, what will happen?

“I haven’t got my answer yet when you reach a flyover because over here (Samarahan), we don’t have a flyover, but when we go to Kuching like BDC area where there is a flyover, are they going to do their own track using the flyover or will they be doing it under,” he said.

Apart from the community leaders, Sarawak Metro had also invited other stakeholders as well as members of the media for today’s proof-of-concept (POC) exercise to have a feel of riding on the ART smart tram.

The POC exercise will end this Dec 15.

Cepat Cepat siapa. Hopefully first half of 2025 can complete ahead of schedule 😝. Must do faster as it's a purely state project thus must do better than the fed government sponsored pan Borneo highway for example ☺️😋😱
