Hie Northasian, i really appreciate your effort in putting this thread up, this is a good thread indeed smile.gif

I'm going on a free and easy trip to HK on the Dec 13th with my family and relatives..
It will be a 6D5N tour..

We booked our flight tickets already and now we were having a headache on which hotel to stay..

We thought of booking our rooms in Metropark Mongkok Hotel.
Is that a good choice?
*
Hi dingyloo, thanks for your compliment~ notworthy.gif

Metropark Mongkok is quite convenient too, it's located in Prince Edward, 5-10mins walk to MTR station, and there are some shopping around that area too.

You may consider below fiolsn's suggestion of Dorsett Seaview in Yau Ma Tei, or Dorsett Far East in Tsuen Wan, a forumer stayed there when travelling with family too. But Dorsett Far East would need some more walks to MTR station, about 15mins.

QUOTE(fiolsn @ Nov 19 2007, 07:45 AM)
why not Dorssett Seaview?..is nearer to the shopping places ahh..
*
Yep, Dorsett Seaview in Yau Ma Tei is fairly convenient too, located just next to Temple Street, 5-10 mins walk to MTR station.

Where is there hotel? near Mongkok MTR? there used to be this Grand hotel, but was demolished and rebuilt as some other hotel.. jsut downstairs teh hotel is the MTR.. within this area is the HK famous lady's streets.. plenty of local street shopping... (watch out for midnight, after 12, many illegal hawkers will be there too because the local police won't be around, you can get cheaper price items as I was told).

The other being Temple street which is futher away (need to take MTR).. but I find things there costing a little more.. Further down ~20 min walk from Mongkok station, ask around where is flower street, you can get things at cheaper price.... where locals like to go...
*
Thanks for your sharing~ sorry but there is some info I've to correct... just afraid wrong info would mislead other forumers...

Yes the Grand Hotel has been demolished years ago and now no longer rebuilt as another hotel, it is now a commercial building. I'm not sure if there are still illegal hawker after midnight... but I am sure local police is working round the clock otherwise who protect us after midnight? smile.gif

Temple street is located near MTR Yau Ma Tei Station, no need to walk from Mongkok MTR station 'coz it's pretty far away... The Flower street you mentioned I believe it's Fa Yuen Street, right? It's near the MTR Prince Edward Station, quite a few of shops selling cheap fashion and shoes, can walk around, we locals often go there too~

may i know where is the romantic place in HK?
cos i going to HK with my GF i hope in this few day i can gv her nice memory.
so, pls intro me any few place romantic...
please reply urgent..cos tml i will go to HK notworthy.gif
*
oh you should have asked me earlier ma... so to let me have some more time to think for you... brows.gif

1st must-go-place of coz The Peak la~ going there to see the night view!!

2nd is the harbourfront of Tsim Sha Tsui, i.e. Avenue of Stars, also at night la... If you're looking for romantic moment, would suggest you to go after the Symthony of Light laser show 'coz too many people during the show! If later at night (like 10pm or after), quite a few of couple like to wander around there, stand in front of the harbour enjoying the sea-breeze.. (but would be quite windy these days 'coz getting cooler recently) Oh yes, must walk to the Ocean Terminal (near the clock tower) as well 'coz it's decorated very very very beautiful for x'mas now!!!!

3. Also harbourfront of Wan Chai, near the Golden Bauhinia Square by the HK Conventions & Exhibitions Centre. TVB drama always like to take shots from there... At night or sunset also good, 'coz it's not as crowded as Tsim Sha Tsui's Avenue of Star.

4. Repulse Bay Beach, or Stanley Beach, better go during sunset la...

5. Disneyland, must wait until the firework show at 7 or 8pm (Winter will change to 7pm, but not sure if it's changed now or not, please check the schedule on its homepage or leaflet when you're there) This one I believe many girls would find it very beautiful and romantic~~!

6. Tsing Ma Bridge Visitor Centre & Viewing Point in Tsing Yi. Very good place for viewing the Tsing Ma Bridge, especially during sunset. Going there by taking MTR to Tsing Yi station, then take the minibus route 308M. Please check it out here : http://www.gohk.gov.hk/text/eng/welcome/kwait_route.html (scroll down) and here : http://www.info.gov.hk/archive/napco/visitors.html Some pics of Tsing Ma Bridge here : http://www.fotop.net/mokfan/20060720

7. Ma Wan Park (also great place for viewing Tsing Ma Bridge too) Please check details here : http://www.mawanpark.com/eng/location.php

8. Lastly, afterall... I think as long as you're being with your gf, wherever you take her, she will also feel romantic ga la~~ smile.gif tongue.gif

if by MTR to Tsim Sha Tsui station, i by walk to the clock tower. Is this very far?Or i need to take taxi to this place?
Any romantic restaurant near by my this hotel?cos wan to send flower to her also..dunno where easy to get the flower?

Added on November 19, 2007, 6:59 pm

Haha..i think HK is shopping haven..but also some of places very romantic and attacktive laugh.gif
*
Your hotel is the one on HK Island, right? go from hotel to TST by taxi will be quite expensive... I can't estimate 'coz I am a cheap person only take bus and MTR.. tongue.gif

No, not far to walk from MTR to clock tower.

Hey, in HK, you don't need to take Taxi all the time ga!!!!!!! HK is not KL, ok?? You can walk, you can take MTR, you can take bus, you can take Tram, HK is a quite developed city.

I've told you, I'm not familiar with places around HK Island. Can't suggest restaurant nearby your hotel. Go find from my #1, or just read thru posts, ok????? If you like so much to eat near your hotel, just have your 3 meals in the restaurant inside your hotel.

Get flower, so rush I can't provide you any info.. You should have planned it and search for info earlier.

I'm going to HK early Dec'07 for 6D5N freen easy trip. Booked SingHo hotel in Mongkok. 1 thing would like to seek your inputs, i'm planning to go to Macau, which ferry to you think that i shall follow, Turbojet or First World Ferry ?

Many thanks in advance on your advise.

Hi kent001,

Take the First World Ferry la, becoz it departs from Tsim Sha Tsui, just 3 stations from Mongkok by MTR.

Cheers~

northasian thanks for your collection of info, i'll be departing for HK this December 22nd. smile.gif 5D4N Free and Easy, living in Tsuen Wan Dorsett Fareast Hotel. smile.gif

it will be a great shopping spree for me and my mom! wanna get some nice boots and clothes~ too bad my boyfriend can't come with us. sad.gif
*
Hi sevixen,

Tsuen Wan is fairly good for shopping, the price may a bit cheaper than downtown... there is a Citistore (a mid-range department store), Tsuen Wan City Plaza (small scale shopping centre) behind Citistore, Nam Fung Shopping Centre right beside the Tsuen Wan MTR station, and small scale shopping centre opposite the Citistore named as Tsuen Fung shopping centre, all of them are selling things at local residents price.

Take MTR from Tsuen Wan for 3 stations to the Kwai Fong MTR station, there are 2 shopping centres right opposite the MTR exit : 1 is Metroplaza, a mid-range shopping mall, and another one is Kwai Chung Plaza, a low-range shopping mall that you can shop at cheaper price than downtown, but a bit crowded like Sugai Wang in KL, but if you are looking for non-branded stuff at local price, I think this is the place for you. I can guarantee you may find the same item sold in Mongkok & Causeway bay for 1/3 more or even double priced!

QUOTE(dingyloo @ Nov 22 2007, 04:29 PM)
Yup, i'm in the midst of planning the itinerary now  biggrin.gif

And oh! Some problems cropped up last minute and my cousin will be booking Nathan Hotel instead..

I've gone through quite a number of reviews about Nathan Hotel.
Travelers said that the MTR station is just 5 minutes walk away from Nathan Hotel..
However, when i consult the map, the MTR station seems quite far away from the Hotel (i can't really assume the amount of time needed to walk from the hotel to the station just by looking at the map though, haha)..

Well, I hope that you can help confirm with me if is it true that the MTR station is just 5 minutes walk away from Nathan hotel?
If that is true then that will be absolutely great  rclxms.gif
*
It won't be far away walking from Nathan Hotel to the nearest MTR - Jordan Station, it's just 4 blocks away. But if you're walking with elderly or children then it may take longer time, like 10mins la... Anyway it won't be too far.

QUOTE(purple_shadow @ Nov 22 2007, 04:59 PM)
Just want to know, what is the season in HK during April-May? And how is the price of clothings at that period? Tot can grab some cheap clothes and shoes due to there is a changing season. Am i rite?  rolleyes.gif
*
It will be late spring during Apr-May. Summer clothing will be just launched during that period, so again, it will be at its highest price. Let me just list the season changing pattern in HK to let you all have an idea when is good for your shopping, 'coz seems quite a few of you don't know the season pattern in northern hemisphere... (including my bf... T_T) :

Spring (Mar-May) -> Summer (Jun-Sept) -> Autumn (Oct-Nov) -> Winter (Dec-Feb)

Sale period normally during Summer end (Aug-Sep) and Winter end (Jan-Feb). So the best shopping period for you summer folks will be the Summer end sale...

QUOTE(terryykf @ Nov 22 2007, 08:51 PM)
yes,i was about to ask the same question also....
just came back from hong Kong few days ago, yawn.gif not so satisfied with the trip because NOT ENOUGH TIME FOR SHOPPING....and the clothes all winter clothes which are not suitable to wear at Malaysia. Will go Hong Kong again next year, maybe somewhere during April-June,the weather that time is Summer right?must be very hot then.....We also went to Shen Zhen,China, wow drool.gif ...there really a shopping heaven oh....especially at the place named 东门,really want to go back again,we can really bargain for the price we want, unlike Ladies Street at Kowloon, really scared to ask for cheaper price because if you asked and you don buy,the seller will scold you oh.. blush.gif
*
April - May not yet "very summer", still not as hot as in July and August. Btw, seems you visit HK quite often.. for business, isn't it?

QUOTE(purple_shadow @ Nov 23 2007, 08:45 AM)
Then, somebody who stay at HK, please give us some guidelines on the shopping season and the sales period if any icon_question.gif  Is Hongkies like Malaysian? Like to compare price and bargain alot with tourists, too?
*
HK is a multi-cultural city, so generally we don't hate particular tourists... only if you're not too rude, not too demanding then it's alright. We normally hate those cheapskates demanding for cheap price but very high quality stuff, that's not reasonable, right?

If you are looking for standard like JOGOYA, there is one in Tsim Sha Tsui called "Todai". Price is like HK$268 + 10% service charge per head, you can refer to their homepage : http://www.todai.com.hk

I haven't been there yet, but I heard many people have good comments on this buffet restaurant.

Lunch of coz got Japanese food as well la, 'coz this restaurant is a Japanese themed one. Price differents a lot between lunch and dinner becoz most people won't eat buffet during lunch, you know, only 1 hour lunch time how to enjoy a good buffet...?

Yes, most shops do accept China RMB in HK, but not all, you gotta ask before you pay.

thanks much for the info! i really appreciate it! biggrin.gif and btw, would like to get a SmarTone Vodafone phone there, dunno whether you got any knowledge about it? i'm not sure which models can be used here although i have done some research. was aiming for Sharp 705SH. and based on your reply to another fellow traveler, now is a good time for shopping liao? biggrin.gif where all the summer clothes are going off cheap?! biggrin.gif

4 shopping centers in just one district, my God. rclxub.gif unbelievable. but a Sungei Wang equivalent sounds tempting. grrrrr.

planning to shop in one district per day. is that a good idea?! it's a 5D4N for us, but 2 days are spent by traveling liao. sad.gif so technically have 3 days left.
*
You can find Smartone vodafone shops everywhere, especially in Mongkok Sai Yeung Choi Street. Sorry I don't know much about the Sharp model if it's usable in M'sia... but I can tell Sharp mobile's screen is the best and I like the pink colour very much!

No, I didn't say it's good time for shopping summer clothes now, conversely it's the worst time for you to find summer clothes 'coz it's autumn-winter time here, as a forumer also said above he can hardly find any summer clothes in the market now. I guess you can only find summer clothes in Esprit Outlet but not much good choice...

The shopping centres I said are not as big as those in M'sia, those are all small scale shopping centres that you can finish each of them in one or two hours.

Actually I also think 5D4N is not enough for those taking AirAsia arriving in Macau... 'coz the 1st and last day are spent on the journey to/from Macau..... Anyway, just try your best la, don't push yourself too much just take it easy~ Travel is to relax but not rush~

oh ya, sorry, i didn't think about the time management that way, now that you mention it, will schedule again. really appreciate your help gal!

i'm taking Hong Kong Express btw, new liner, hope it's safe. unsure.gif but anyway, even not taking AA also waste 2 days with traveling liao. my trip was a rushed decision, therefore didn't have the luxury to do a good amount of planning, so will do loh. sad.gif

Hm.. HK is not a country, HK is a city only, under administration of People Republic of China, which is a country.

QUOTE(pucman @ Nov 25 2007, 01:22 AM)
Is it better to pay in Hong Kong dollar or RMB ?

Can you recommend any airline from Kuala Lumpur to Hong Kong that most budget tourist use ?

Also please recommend a budget hotel.

I would also like to visit a spa with big jacuzzi as I love to sit there and enjoy the hot spring water bubbles. (No 'extra service' type). Recommend please.

Any large buddhist temple that offer good vegetarian food there ? We have such a buddhist temple in KL which offers lunch time crowds.

I am only one person. So sad I can't join tour because somebody said it is expensive.
*
You calculate yourself la... RMB rate is now higher than HKD... and HKD is still the prevailing currency used in HK.

As I know, most M'sian budget traveller used AirAsia, but now they haven't launched direct flight to HK, at least not until next year. Other airline, as mentioned above by Se_vixen, he will take Hong Kong Express. But don't ask me about the price 'coz I don't have any idea of it. You have to do some research and planning on your own.

Budget hotel/hostel/guesthouse/lodge list I've put on the #1 post. Please look thru them and find the best for yourself. We also had some posts talking about cheap and tidy hostel in HK, you can try find them out around page 6-9.

Spa/massage in HK is expensive, even myself will only have spa/massage in China/Thailand/Bali/M'sia, I never have those treatments in HK... Sorry can't recommend.

Large Bubbhist Temple offering Chinese Veggie meal is located in Lantau Island, the Big Buddha. The Veg meal is not free, my bf's parents had it a few years back at about HKD60 per head. Not sure the price changed now.

1 person no need join tour la... plan your own is more free~

I'm planning to get the tickets at 11am or 12pm, will there be any extremely long queue? biggrin.gif . Pls enlighten me.

Thank you..

It will not be full until need to be closed nowadays ga la... Disneyland HK even can't meet the target revenue this year! So don't need to worry it will be too many people. On Sat would need some time to queue up, last time I went during Summer vacation on weekends also needed to queue up nearly 30mins...

pls giv me some advise smile.gif
*
RM2K is only for the expense in HK not include air tickets and accomodation, right? It depends on how you spend la... If not much shopping, I think it's good enough for 4-5 days trip in HK perhaps plus 1 day Macau as well...

Macau to HK ferry fare about HKD2xx-3xx round trip, train from Shenzhen to HK is cheaper, under HKD100 per single trip...

You expect HKD30-40 per meal la... Of coz some can be cheaper and some can be more expensive, this is just an average cost... Yes, Jordan is a good location to travel around. No, I haven't heard of that hotel before... maybe that is very small hostel? Do you have the hotel's website?

EDIT: Sorry I forgot to answer your 2nd question... You can take MTR to Mongkok Station for both streets.

wat is the taxi price from ferry station to jordan?

HKD142 is fare for single journey, the amount I mentioned was round-trip 'coz you must go back and forth, don't you? You can see that the prices are different between Macau -> HK and HK -> Macau.

Sorry I really seldom take taxi in HK... not rich enough.. tongue.gif so I don't know roughly how much to go from TST ferry pier to Jordan. But, you can take MTR indeed... tongue.gif Majority of HKers take MTR/bus rather than taxi in daily life unless they're going to places not reach by MTR/bus, or they're simply too rich or too rush... sweat.gif

I see...well im going to HK middle of December rclxm9.gif  rclxm9.gif i'll be there for 5 days. So,i was thinking of visiting both parks.the rest of the days will be simply shopping and sightseeing. sweat.gif  sweat.gif I was hopin to catch some Christmas festivals as well... thumbup.gif

BTW,are there a lot of pickpockets there?Do they speak English ,i can hardly speak Mandarin but i speak a lil bit of Cantonese tho not fluent. sweat.gif

I cant wait to go there. Can recommend me any places there where i MUST go for sightseeing/shopping???
I would like to use the 5 days well while im there.Maybe a place/something we can only get there but not in Malaysia, perhaps?

thanks ! icon_rolleyes.gif

No, not many pickpockets, but of coz you still need to be aware your belongings all the time. Wallet better don't put it in the back pocket of your pants especially in Ladies street/Temple street/Mongkok area.

Yes, most salespersons in tourist areas can speak English (but if the english you speak has heavy M'sian accent, better speak it slowly 'coz I find most HKers can't catch this accent of English very much...) People in Cha Charn Teng mostly don't understand English and menu mainly written in Chinese...

For places of interest/shopping please read thru my #1 post and some posts I replied to forumers before. Thank you.

thanks northasian smile.gif

is this the ferry timetable from macau to hk(tsim she tsui station)? coz too many already.confusing..hehe
http://www.nwff.com.hk/engtext/schedule/ro...m=25&line=macau

how about from macau airport to ferry terminal? any mrt to reach there?
*
Yes that's the ferry schedule and fare table for TST pier. Transportation for both Macau ferry pier and TST ferry pier can be found in the link in the time table : "Easy Transit". Click it and there is table showing which route of bus you can take to the destination from each pier. From that table it stated you can take TCM route AP1 from Macau ferry pier to Macau Airport, and I think it should be vice versa. No, Macau has no railways, all transportation is on ground vehicle (taxi, bus, minibus)

hey girl, would like to know whether the prices for cosmetics in HK are generally cheaper than Malaysia. any idea? can't seem to find out about this thru discussions in other forums. sad.gif
*
I guess it would be more or less the same price... Try shopping from Bonjour instead of Sasa in HK, 'coz I always find Sasa selling at higher price for the same product than Bonjour (it's a shop like Sasa selling cosmetics/skincare products and branches are everywhere)

sob sob, my gf is in hong kong now while i'm stuck in Malaysia going through my exams.

Just wanna ask, is there any way to get to hong kong by train from shanghai or suzhou? i'll be there the following week and looking for affordable ways to get to hong kong. Is staying in hong kong expensive?
*
I'm not sure about the train, but I guess there are ways to go on ground instead of in air (but nowadays most people go by air...). Maybe you have to take trains and transit in some cities in China lor...

How much to you is expensive and how much to you is inexpensive? You can't stay at your gf's place in HK?

gotcha girl. thanks for the header. was thinking about raiding Sasa on my trip. sweat.gif so it's all over the streets? looking forward to eat in Hui Lau San and this store you recommended. smile.gif

No la... Sasa raised all the price in recent years... You can try go in Sasa and compare~! Check these out :
1. Bonjour 卓悅 - http://www.bonjourhk.com/en/main.aspx
2. Aster 雅施 - http://www.aster.hk/sub/others/location.php
3. Angel 天使 - http://www.angel.com.hk/index.html

You can find all of these cosmetic shops in Mongkok, TST, Causeway Bay, among them Bonjour have most branches that you can even find there are 2-3 outlets on same street in Mongkok.

anyone can gimme advice on which hotel to book?

i am going to hk on early jan and looking for cheap and clean hotel...
hopefully at range of less than rm200/night (the cheaper better lor but must be clean) ... don't mind far abit as long as MTR is nearby ...

i read the previous posts and find that dorsett far east at tsuenwan seems pretty okay...anymore?

should i find the cheapest rate online or call up the local travel agents here to check out the price? where would be cheaper? usually i do online but not sure about hk
*
Except Dorsett far east, I've also mentioned many times in the thread that a forumer has tried the Dragon Hostel in Mongkok is tidy and cheap, if you don't mind to stay in a hostel/guesthouse instead of hotel, maybe you can try this one.

I personally like to book directly with the hotel online instead of thru local travel agents, 'coz it's more direct and will not be cheated by travel agents. I think the price would be more or less the same.
