Hi .. since this thread is dedicated to travel in HK, was just wondering whether can anyone give some suggestions for 1st time visitor to HK.

Lots of info, you have on the 1st post of this thread, thanks northasian.

I'll be going there during Dec Xmas week and was wondering where would be the best place to visits and great places to eat. There were just too many exciting places in HK, and too many to visit. So was wondering if anyone could give some suggestions for 1st timers like me.

My trip will last 5D 4N, and was making out some itinerary and would appreciate some suggestions.

smile.gif

The best place to visit for 1st visitor to HK, I think it must be The Peak at night, especially during x'mas many buildings will be lighten up with beautiful light decoration~! 2nd best place is the harbourfront of Tsim Sha Tsui, i.e. the Star Avenue. Walk along and see the night view + Symphony of Light Show at 8pm~

Great places to eat ar... depends on what you like to eat and the budget... You have to tell us more about your preference before we can give suggestions~

Pretty good information. I just went there early this year, I believe sufficient budget will definitely make your trip happier and enjoyable

Well, I do love lots of food HK has to offer .. and so you see my problem ... see everything .. want to try everything ....  biggrin.gif  ..

Well, I'm just looking for a good decent and what HK is famous for and my budget is around HK500 ... will that help?

*
you mean the total budget for food during the 5 days in HK is HKD500? I'm afraid that might not be enough... I heard some forumers spent about HKD100 just for the dessert in Hui Lau Shan.....

Anyway, let me give you some suggestions and then you make up your budget again la...

1. Dessert in Hui Lau Shan - famous for different kind of mango desserts, average price for each dessert is about HKD20-30

2. Egg Tart - famous one is the one called 檀島 (Honolulu Coffee Shop), a branch in Mongkok is 旺角洗衣街135號, another two on HK Island and one in HKIA Terminal 2. Average price per egg tart is about HKD5 or above, can't remember...

3. Cha Charn Teng - just pop in any one of them, taste is completely different from Kim Gary, far far a lot more delicious!! Don't believe Kim Gary is originated from HK!!!! Average price per dish is about HKD30

4. Dim Sum - I have a list of Chinese restaurants on #1 post. Try to have it during Tea Time (i.e. after 2.00 or 2.30pm), price might be cheaper, can ask before you go in. Average price for each dim sum abour HKD10

5. Street hawker - along Fa Yuen Street, Sai Yeung Choi Street in Mongkok. Not really a hawker in the street, but shop lot selling different kinda street snack. Average price per item is about HKD5

6. Wanton noodle - completely different from those in M'sia, a lot bigger and many shrimp inside. Try to look for those noodle stall in Mongkok, some as cheap as HKD10-16 per bowl only

7. Wife cake (Lo Poh Beng) - from Kee Wah Bakery or Hang Heung Bakery in Yuen Long. Average price is about HKD5 (Kee Wah will be a bit more expensive)

8. Roast Duck/Roast Pork Rice - can try in Cha Charn Teng or any fast food chain. Average price is HKD20-25 per dish

Actually I've listed all those info on my #1 post, you can find more info from there..

Oh  ... no ... actually HKD 500 is for a per day (half for lunch and half for dinner, that sort of thing).

Anyway, you do have a great list for food .. really appreciate your suggestions here. As I'm going on a "Free & Easy" tour, so it gives us more flexibility in what we want to see, where we want to go and the time is within our control.

Thanks northasian  smile.gif

If HKD500 is per day then it would be much much better~ You can have more choices~~

For dimsum, it's mentioned to go to Tao Heung chain, but which restaurant actually? Is it CHEERS or SUPER88?

Also for the egg tart, what is the road name in english (旺角洗衣街135號)?
*
All Tao Heung, Super 88 & Cheers offers Dim Sum. Their Dim Sum can't say the cheapest, but at least reasonable priced, good quality and location is convenient for tourists.

Sai Yee Street is the 2nd one parallel to Ladies Street. That coffee shop is just one of the best egg tarts shop in HK. Actually any one bakery's egg tart will surely be more delicious than those in M'sia.

Yes, I can sure that HK has one of the best yau char gwai in the world!! Beside HK, I think the one made in South China Province like Guangzhou, Zuhai, Shenzhen or Macau won't be bad too~~ Those made in South East Asia are mostly too slim and too dry...

Yes, that restaurant is a very traditional one and have long history in HK. Their name should be " 蓮香樓 Lin Heung Tea House ", address is 160-164, Wellington Street, Central 中環威靈頓街160-164號.

Another authentic Chinese restaurant which is famous of roast goose and visited by many celebrities/rich people, is called Yung Kee Restaurant 鏞記酒家. Address is :
32-40, Wellington Street, Central 中環威靈頓街32-40號.

But you should expect their price will be higher than other Chinese restaurants la...

QUOTE(sylvian14 @ Nov 11 2007, 06:01 AM)
Maybe I can provide some info to you on how much it'll cost, as I'll be going to HK during the Xmas week.

I've booked and made reservations during the last MATTA fair that was held at PWTC, and the cost came up to approx. RM 2,300 (per person).  This price covers airplane ticket and accommodation. Of cos, it's only for 4D 3N as that was offered in their list of tours. If you need to extend your stay, that will come up to about RM 420 per additional day, depending on the star rating of the respective hotels.

Also, because the period that I've booked, is considered as a peak season, obviously the price differ from non-peak season.

If you're going on a Free & Easy tour, then you will need to budget out the cost for food and transportation, depending on your itinerary. Otherwise, it should be covered, again, depending on your tour agency of your choice and the type of tour you are going for, Free & Easy or Guided Tour. I'm budgeting about HKD500 per day, which includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. Transportation wise, I'm planning to purchase the Octopus card. This card is very convenient for tourist like us, for travelling and purchases, as it's like a pre-paid card, once you have used it, it'll be automatically deducted from there. There are also kiosk which you can top-up the amount in the card.

The best people to advise you is the tour agency themselves. Look around for any Tour agency and look for their tours to HK.

Last I heard that most of the flights during this season are fully booked and so are the hotels, but you'll never know, as there are always some last minute cancellation.

All in all .. conservative figure .. I would say ... RM 5,000 or less or more .. depending on the number of days, places to visits and the type of tour.

Hope that was helpful ..  smile.gif

*
Thanks for sharing with others~ notworthy.gif

Your budget is not that tight wor, should be more than enough for you to enjoy a very nice and comfy trip here~~ thumbup.gif Are you flying directly to HKIA?

FYI, Octopus card can be added-value in any 7-11 & Circle K convenience stores, also can add in Park'n Shop supermarkets, and all MTR/KCRC/LRT stations. Very convenient~!

Ah yes, northasian, about the 3 days unlimited Octopus card for tourist, I believe we can purchase it in HKIA itself. Yes, I'll be landing in directly in HKIA.

What i've read is they do provide this unlimited rides on transportation, but does it include ferry rides? I'm also planning to go to Macao, as I've got a friend, who is staying there. I'm not sure whether does this unlimited Octopus card covers this?

Also, once after the 3 days limit, we top up at any convenient kiosk or 7-11, as you've mentioned, will it still be "unlimited" rides on transportation? Or does the "unlimited" rides is expired and from then on, you'll be charged as you go along?

*
Yep, you can get the Tourist Octopus card at HKIA, the MTR counter in Arrival Hall.

Of coz not include other transportation rides than MTR. You can read thru the info in this website : http://www.octopuscards.com/consumer/help/...ts/en/index.jsp
It stated "Three days of unlimited rides on the MTR* (except on the Airport Express Line), starting on the day of your first MTR journey."

As it already said it's a 3-day limit of unlimited MTR rides, of coz after 3 days, your octopus card will be on "pay as you go" basis. So if you'd like to visit Macau, I'd suggest you go after the first 3 days of your trip.

Also, the tourist octopus card includes Airport Express Line (AEL) rides, so you should take AEL from HKIA to downtown so you won't waste the value...

p.s. forgot to remind you that ferry rides from HK to Macau v.v. cannot use octopus card to pay, you have to purchase ticket by cash (or credit card, not sure) at the ferry counter at the pier.

I will be going to HK via macau end of the month. Travelling with family and kids.

Is there any ferry from Macau to Disneyland (lantau island)?
or
I need to take ferry to HK island and take taxi from there to Disneyland?
*
No, there is no ferry service from Macau to Disneyland Hongkong.

Yes, you have to take ferry to HK Island or Kowloon (Tsim Sha Tsui) then take taxi (if you can afford) or MTR to Disneyland.

Welcome..

Hotels in Disneyland normally over HKD1000 per nite... if you've asked some travel agents and they said it's full, I'm afraid you have to try contact the hotel directly... Hotel may hold some rooms for their direct selling but rate would be higher.

May i know near by this hotel got any nice food?
May i know near this place got any special?
please intro me all nice place and nice food.. notworthy.gif

Dorsett Seaview hotel is located in Yau Ma Tei, very close to Temple Street (can say just next to it). So you won't need to worry about food. Can't say nice food la, but those are very "localised" food (i.e. Genuine HK style). I rarely visit there, so sorry that I can't recommend any nice food around there. I think you won't stick to your hotel all the time, so just try to eat in other areas as recommended in my #1 post or recommended by other forumers.

Near your hotel, special place is Temple Street la, it's like Ladies street, and there are a lot of fortune-tellers stall too, can try~ Once I took my Japanese friends there and had the Chinese fortune-telling, it's quite accurate, haha... there got Tarot fortune-teller too.

From your hotel can walk to Mongkok and Jordan. In Jordan, opposite Yue Hua Chinese Department Store, there is a very famous cha charn teng called "Australia Dairy Company" (澳洲牛奶公司). I like their Steamed egg custard. Details can check this site: http://www.openrice.com/restaurant/sr2.htm?shopid=90 (in Chinese only) Address: 47 Parkes Street, Jordan

may i know near by here got any nice food?
may i know normally HK MRT what time will be close?

HK one is MTR not MRT. MRT is the one in Singapore.

Prices of the 3 days unlimited tourist octopus card you can check from that website I posted earlier. I post out the website is for you guys to check for your own and find the most suitable info according to your needs.

Metropark on HK island I'm not that familiar, actually I am a "Kowloon people", so I am more familiar with Kowloon side places. I've said, when you travel, you won't stick to the area around your hotel all the time, you won't eat your 3 meals there, you can refer to our forumers' recommendations and try the nice food all around Hong Kong, rather than just find the nice food near your hotel.

MTR normally closed around 1am, please check the MTR website I posted on #1 for the exact time of last train for each station, thank you!

and if u really want an octopus card, u can buy from me. i still got 9 of it. my 50 buck deposit still inside all 9 and still got remainder 30+ HKD unused inside. dont trust me, go to MTR buy lor. got plastic wrapper given wan.

northasian is right btw. u will not eat 3 meals at the same area. it'll be really weird if u do so. he/she is a kowloon person, i am more of a mongkok/tsim tsa tsui person. been so many times liao i still like those areas.

kowloon tong got one nice mall, i dunno whats the name. really huge. northasian u know whats it called ?

Just recommend any food you tried which was nice 'coz you won't know others' budget, I believe there are people who can afford and appreciate good food without a budget like you. The world is very big and there are different kinda people around.

Haha... Kowloon already includes Mongkok/Tsim Sha Tsui... That's why I said I'm "Kowloon people" which covers generally all parts of Kowloon... tongue.gif

The mall you said in Kowloon Tong is Festival Walk. I've included this mall info on my #1 post as well... Yep, it's a huge mall and mainly shopping for medium to high-end brands.

Hi Northasian, first of all, I would like to thank you for all your precious info, it really helps us a lot.

But regarding the accommodation, any recommendation? Around kowloon area? my first priority if cheap but clean and tidy.

Thanks.
