why i need to account electricity when my mass storage/backups are offline? also in this modern age, you are not limited to HDD, you have flash storage for cheap now. if manufacturer willing to give 5 years warranty, it mean that devices can lasts that long most of the time, you dont need to retire that in 1/2 years. you see backblaze report, they are having hdd that was used for close to 8 years, offline media can lasts even longer as long the disk cover remain fully sealed.
https://www.backblaze.com/blog/backblaze-dr...ts-for-q1-2023/

anyway my important documents are less than 1GB honestly, i just used my free google storage for those. but if i want to have a backup of my not important files, i need at least 10TB, google want rm200/monthly for those? it will be hard time for me to consider.  smile.gif

anyway cloud storage are not meant for everyone, i feel it is expensive because i hardly utilize it.

You don’t have kids to take photos or videos that will eat up space. 10 mins video is close to 1gb already I think. If you don’t have real time automatic back up, you’re prone to losing weeks or months of contents. Phones get lost, water damaged, stolen.. and in my case, just died without a warning after 6 years. But thanks to iCloud, I did not lose anything. I got a cheap phone and have my phone restored exactly like it was 2 hours ago in minutes

Some people say they back up off line like once every week. Really? Can you do it religiously every week? People get busy and forget to do routine things like this. Paying a bit for cloud storage means we can take one thing off our mind and make life easier.

Anyway your files not important. Lose also never mind. Sure. But our stuff are invaluable memories.

My point is I don’t understand why people complain shit like 256gb phone is nOt EnOugHt memory. Like the better way is to store things in the cloud and not have everything offline

congrats you genius. but most people value convenience. once i realize how convenient it is to use airpods (like pop up case, immediately gets connected via bluetooth), i never look at other brands anymore, despite having a cheaper price tag or better sound quality. the smooth user experience cannot be replaced. you gonna write a custom app and back up manually every day? not for me.

Interesting discussion. I recently bought two SanDisk SSD 1TB at RM600 each from Shopee Official San Disk store.
Keep all important backups. One SSD keep at home and one SSD keep at my parents home.
Like they said: don't keep all eggs in one basket.
These SSDs are also password protected.
I prefer this method of storage.

The pricing is actually pretty competitive nowadays. The hard disks don't last forever, you still need to change them every 2-3 years. Plus electricity and the convenience, it will come out to roughly the same number.

RM8.50/month is a bit expensive can look for cheaper ones. But here is the math.
RM8.50 per month works out to RM102 per year or RM210 every two years for a 100 gb.

A new 1 TB portable hard disk is ~RM200. Assuming you have a backup and you change the disk once every 2 years.
That's RM200 every year for changing your hard disk and it's backup copy. 1 TB.
Not inclusive electricity, hardware, hassle etc. The only real advantage is privacy.

Disclaimer: I switched to cloud from self hosted 2-3 years back.

Donno, >3 years back? Back then when Google gave out unlimited photo storage, we kept all our photos on it. Then when Google taketh it away, I went shopping around and settled on Onedrive.

And since Onedrive came with it's own storage, my little server saw less and less use, so I gradually retired the whole thing.

Yes, when I set up my server many years back, I learned that for personal use, manual backups are ok, but if I expect others (my family) to use it, it must be near effortless.

never realized i will be switching to SSD for external mass-storage usage so soon. biggrin.gif
but anyway cloud storage lovers will said flash storage will rosak too, meanwhile i still have microsd that i used for r4 flashcart from year 2008 that is still working laugh.gif turn on my old ds now, oh wait it still working. i dont know where are this replacing your disk every 2-3 years came from? its true that the disk will be less reliable over time, thats why we have multiple copy of those disk on separate disk.

that's what TS was arguing about, why need more internals storage when u can get subscription clouds

and i state the downside of it

should just buy minimum 256gb and called it a day, it's just comfortable enough
