i keep all my shit on my shitty 2021 128gb iphone with 2TB family icloud subscription (USD9.99 a month). every photo gets uploaded immediately. I never run of of space despite having thousands of full res videos.

and I never worry about losing my phone. if I did lose it, a restored iphone with all my data is in my hand within 2 hours.

Even with 200GB iCloud and 1TB OneDrive I still need a 256gb phone at least. For my offline music and videos.

2tb for 10usd is expensive la ts.
2tb ssd are now around 73usd already.

2TB storage let say SSD about RM300-500 one time.
With cloud storage 2TB is RM45 per month or RM540 per annum.

Let say you use for next 30 years, you will spend RM16k for subscription.
Meanwhile the physical storage you bought still RM300-500 (let say with lifespan of 10 years for physical storage), so RM500*3=RM1500.

So in 30 years, total cost for cloud storage is 10x higher.

Also note that physical storage /GB is cheaper over time but cloud storage service does not drop price over time (in fact may increase).

Is Onedrive able to backup every single camera picture/video after being taken? I'm comparing this to Google One which is around RM10/month (annual plan) for 200GB.

One thing I like about Google Photos is that almost all my family members has a google account so I can easily add them to a shared family folder for all the pictures/videos

I’m a strong supporter of this. Shared across 5 family members.. supporting across multiple iPhones, iPads etc. if phone hilang, I can still sleep well at night 😁

not always an option because cloud needs internet connection to work. especially when you travel and take lots of pics and vids, how to upload gigs of data using travel sim with very limited quota? hotel wifi also not always stable and fast enough for high res, large uploads. i ended up bringing my spare phone and use airdrop for backup.

Frankly, I don't get why you are all arguing with each other. Each of you are right, and at the same time all also wrong together.

If money is an issue, go with whatever cheapest back up works for your needs. If you got money to spend, then go with whatever is most convenient for you to keep your data backed up.

However, going only 1 approach is often the stupidest thing you can do. The right thing to do is to have multiple back ups. If you back up to iCloud, you should also have it set up so its mirrored to be saved locally to a harddrive or another cloud provider.

The cloud should never be your primary fall back, you should always have a local copy with you.

Remember the adage of survival planning. Three is two, two is one and one is none. Always expect one of your avenues to fail.
Subscription makes sense for some things.

Like cloud storage, as it costs money to maintain the infrastructure. Storing in a stable cloud provider/company also gives peace of mind. Their infrastructure is robust and already have all the hardware failovers built into the cost. You don't have to worry about it at all.

Sure some here can roll out their own solution, but it will be prone to error/disaster. I've had hard drives suddenly stop working and nearly lost hundreds of gigabytes of memories, but luckily I have it backed up in multiple places. Took me some time to convince my wife that a bunch of portable hard drives is NOT a long term back up solution.

lame advise. storage is cheap, you can put your so called 'important data' on as many storage as possible.
guess what, i still have my hdd from year 2009, it still working. i doubt that your so called 'important data' is in terabyte in space, unless we are talking about rare classic porn.
also flash storage are known to be more reliable as it more immune to dusts (storage media doesn't need to be fully sealed). problem is it just most people dont have good backup strategy, myself too but what the hell, i dont have important personal data anyway.

its a 1tb disk and it have been copied over another 2 hard disk as backups(offline). 2 backup enough for me.
i ordered 4tb ssd from aliexpress to be a backup for another hard disk lol, damn i should buy more lel

last two month i did a round of disk check. looks good. maybe if i did a test today,it will show bad sectors, but who cares. 

anyway the idea if your data is important, make as many backups as possible, cloud, offline backup of any media and online storage. it doesn't matter. some people i see too trusted on their devices, they dont make any sort of backup.

address book, email, go with Google account.

photos, just sign up rm134 per year for 200gb of google photo..

once a while, delete those photo on your phone to make space for new photos..

that's it...

this is why i dont go for cloud route especially google wan, each file uploaded will have a checksum, if the checksum matched with DMCA claimed files, good luck accessing those files lol.

The pricing is actually pretty competitive nowadays. The hard disks don't last forever, you still need to change them every 2-3 years. Plus electricity and the convenience, it will come out to roughly the same number.

RM8.50/month is a bit expensive can look for cheaper ones. But here is the math.
RM8.50 per month works out to RM102 per year or RM210 every two years for a 100 gb.

A new 1 TB portable hard disk is ~RM200. Assuming you have a backup and you change the disk once every 2 years.
That's RM200 every year for changing your hard disk and it's backup copy. 1 TB.
Not inclusive electricity, hardware, hassle etc. The only real advantage is privacy.

Disclaimer: I switched to cloud from self hosted 2-3 years back.
